India's millionaire population rise 6% in 2024.

Why in the news?

  • Global property consultant Knight Frank released its 'The Wealth Report 2025', which estimated the HNWI population in India at 85,698 in 2024, as against 80,686 in the preceding year.

Important points:

  • Number of Indian high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), those having assets more than $10 million, rose 6% last year to 85,698, according to Knight Frank.
  •  India is now home to 191 billionaires of which 26 joined the ranks in just the last year which was pegged at just 7 in 2019. 
  • The combined wealth of Indian billionaires is estimated at US$ 950 billion, ranking the country third globally, behind the U.S. (US$ 5.7 trn) and Mainland China (US$ 1.34 trn).

Sahitya Akademi will be organising “Festival of Letters 2025”.

Why in the news?

  • Sahitya Akademi, India’s premier literary institution working under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, will be organizing its annual Festival of Letters at Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi from 7th March 2025 to 12th March 2025. 

Important points:

  • Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Government of India, will inaugurate the festival.
  • Sri Mahesh Dattani, eminent English Playwright will be the chief guest of the award ceremony in which the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Awards in 23 languages will be presented and Sri Upamanyu Chatterjee, eminent Writer and Scholar will deliver this year’s Samvatsar Lecture.
  • This is Asia’s Largest Literature Festivalwith about 700 writers from different parts of the country representing more than 50 languages participating in the festival that spans over 100 sessions. 
  • The theme of the festival will be Indian Literary Traditions and a National Seminar on the topic featuring eminent thinkers and writers will be organized during the last three days of the festival.
  • The festival will feature Young Writers, Women Writers, Dalit Writers, Writers from North East, Tribal writers and poets, LGBTQ writers and poets along with many eminent writers, translators, publishers, poets and distinguished personalities from different walks of life and Festival of Letters continue its status as India’s Most Inclusive Literature Festival since 1985.


CM Mohan Yadav Inaugurates 42nd National Senior Rowing Championship.

  • Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the 42nd National Senior Rowing Championship at Madhya Pradesh State Water Sports Academy, located on the Upper Lake in the city.

Important points:

  • More than 500 players from all over the country are participating in the championship.
  •  A total of 27 teams from across the country including 23 states and of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Services Sports Control Board are participating in the competition.

Tata Motors begins trials of hydrogen-powered heavy duty trucks .

  • Tata Motors launched the first-ever trials of hydrogen-powered heavy duty trucks in order to assess their viability for long haul transportation solutions.

Important points:

  • Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari with Union Minister of Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi and Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh flags off India’s First Hydrogen Truck Trials, at Taj Palace in New Delhi .
  • The trial phase will span up to24 months and involves deployment of 16 advanced hydrogen-powered vehicleswith varying configurations and payload capacities.
  • The trucks, equipped with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines and Fuel Cell technologies, will be tested on India's most prominent freight routes, including those around Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar

Australia great Steve Smith announces retirement from ODI cricket.

Why in the news?

  • Following their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 exit, Australia skipper Steve Smith has called it quits in the 50-over format. 

Important points:

  • The two-time ICC Men's Cricket World Cup winner will continue to play Test and T20I cricket for Australia, but his side's narrow loss to India in the Champions Trophy semi-finals on Tuesday was the last 50-over contest he will feature in for his country.
  • Smith, who featured in 170 ODIs for Australia, scored 5800 runs at 43.28 including 12 centuries and 35 half centuries while also registering 28 wickets to his name.
  • The batter was also an integral member of Australia's Cricket World Cup winning sides in 2015 and 2023.
