ISRO drops 12-year-old satellite Megha Tropiques into Pacific Ocean

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently successfully carried out a controlled descent of its 12-year-old low earth orbit satellite Megha Tropiques-1 (MT-1) into the Pacific Ocean.

  • ISRO has informed that it is planning to bring this satellite back to Earth.

  • Dropping this satellite on the earth was a very challenging task for ISRO, which ISRO successfully carried out.

  • ISRO has been steadily reducing the distance of the satellite from Earth since August, 2022.

  • For this, he was spending about 120 kg of fuel present in the satellite.

  • The booster of the satellite was turned on twice before reaching the earth.

  • This process is called de-boost. The satellite started burning rapidly as soon as it entered the Earth's atmosphere and was completely destroyed by the time it reached the sea.

About Megha Tropiques Satellite

  • This satellite was launched in October 2011 by ISRO in collaboration with the French space agency CNES.

  • The satellite was designed to provide weather information for three years, but it served for more than 10 years.

Defence forces halt ALH Dhruv fleet operations in wake of Navy accident

Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupts, covering villages in ash

Indonesia's Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupted on March 12, sending smoke and ash spreading over nearby villages.

  • The volcano is located on the island of Java near Yogyakarta, the cultural capital of Indonesia.

  • The ash cloud has reached 9,600 feet above the surface. The area up to seven kilometers from the blast site has been restricted.

  • In 2010 a major eruption of the volcano killed over 300 people.

  • Indonesia, which has about 130 active volcanoes, lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

  • Mount Merapi is a volcanic mountain on the island of Java in Indonesia and is the most active volcano in Indonesia.

  • It was discovered by Mr. Morris in 1754 and is also known as the 'Mountain of Fire' because of its explosive nature.

What is a volcano?

  • A volcano is a type of mountain that erupts beneath the Earth's surface into a pool of molten rock.

  • During a volcanic eruption, underground pressure is created due to the formation of magma, which is molten rock mixed with gas.

  • Lava coming out of a volcano takes the form of a mountain.

  • After which whenever these substances come out of this volcano, they cause a big explosion.

Oscars 2023: RRR's 'Naatu Naatu' wins Best Original Song award

Centre signs Rs 934 crore deal with HSL to Refit INS Sindhukirti Submarine in Visakhapatnam

In a further boost to achieve 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', the Ministry of Defense on March 13, 2023 signed a contract for General Refit of Sindhukirti Submarine at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam at a total cost of Rs 934 crore .

Overview of the News

  • Sindhukirti is the third Kilo class Diesel Electric Submarine.

  • The project involves over 20 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and will generate employment of 1,000 man-days per day for the project duration.

INS Sindhukirti Submarine

  • It is a diesel-electric submarine.

  • It was commissioned on June 7, 1990 and since then has been serving the nation in various capacities.

  • It has a displacement of 1860 tonnes when submerged and is 67.5 metres in length

  • The submarine has a maximum speed of 20 knots (about 37 km per hour) when submerged and can dive to a depth of 300 metres.

  • It is armed with six 533 mm torpedo tubes and can carry up to 18 torpedoes or missiles.

  • The shipyard 'Hindustan Shipyard Limited' is located in Visakhapatnam.

Exercise 'La Perouse' between navies of India, US, Japan, France, UK and Australia begins

The third edition of the multilateral exercise 'La Perouse' was held from 13 to 14 March 2023 in the Indian Ocean region.

  • It saw the participation of personnel, ships and integral helicopters from the Royal Australian Navy, French Navy, Indian Navy, Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, Royal Navy and United States Navy.

  • Indian Navy's indigenously built guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri and fleet tanker INS Jyoti participated in the  exercise.

  • Indian Navy's participation in the exercise reflects the high level of synergy, coordination and interoperability between friendly navies and their commitment to a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region.

  • The exercise involved complex and advanced naval operations, including surface warfare, anti-air warfare, air defense exercises, cross-deck landings and tactical maneuvers.

About Exercise 'La Perouse'

  • The first edition of this joint exercise was initiated by France in 2019.

  • The biennial exercise La Perouse is organized by the French Navy.

  • It aims to enhance maritime domain awareness and optimize maritime coordination among the participating navies in the Indo-Pacific region.

International conference on “Shared Buddhist Heritage”
