BSF first female camel squad to be deployed along India Pak Border

Border Security Force (BSF) will soon deploy its first female camel riding squad along the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan and Gujarat.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The female camel riding squad participated for the first time in the BSF Raising Day Parade on 1st December. This Squad is the first of its kind in the world.
  • Giving this information, DIG BSF Bikaner, Pushpendra singh Rrathore said that Intensive training was given to this squad at the Bikaner Regional Headquarters of BSF under the supervision of skilled trainers
  • The BSF is the only force in the country to have the Camel Contingents and the Camel Mounted Band.
  • BSF, traditionally known as the 'first line of defence', the Camel Contingents are used to keep a vigil in the vast expanse of the Thar Desert.

Border Security Force (BSF) :

  • It is one of the 7 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in India. It was set upon 1 December 1965. 
  • It is the only CAPF which has an Air Wing, Water wing and Artillery wing.
  • It comes under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • It is also known as the ’first line of defence' in India.

Tennis great Roger Federer to retire from professional Tennis

Roger Federer of Switzerland, regarded as one of the greatest male tennis players, has announced his retirement from professional tennis on 15 September 2022.

He said that the Laver cup to be held in London, England next week will be his last professional tournament.

  • The 41 year old has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles in his career spanning over 24 years. He has won seven Wimbledon titles, five U.S. Open titles, six Australian Open titles and a single French Open in 2009.
  • He also holds the record for 237 consecutive weeks as world number one player on the Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) ranking. 

25th Energy Technology meet held in Mumbai

26th meeting of FSDC held in Mumbai

The meeting, which was attended by the chief of various financial sector regulators, discussed important financial issues which can affect the country’s financial sectors and its stability.

  • It discussed the Early Warning Indicators for the economy and India’s preparedness to deal with them, improving the efficiency of the existing Financial/Credit Information Systems, issues of governance and management in Systemically Important Financial Institutions including Financial Market Infrastructures, strengthening cyber security framework in the financial sector,etc.

Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) :

  • It was set up on the recommendation of the Raghu Ram Rajan committee on “Financial Sector Reform”.

  • The Council monitors macro prudential supervision of the economy, including functioning of large financial conglomerates, and addresses inter-regulatory coordination and financial sector development issues. 
  • It also focuses on financial literacy and financial inclusion.

The three day (14-16 September) international conference ANGAN 2022 (Augmenting Nature by Green Affordable New-habitat) was held in New Delhi.

  • The international conference has been organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and the Indo-Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project.
  • The objective of ANGAN 2022 is to deliberate on various thematic tracks leading India on the road to Net Zero Energy and Low Carbon Buildings.
  • India has committed itself to become net carbon zero by 2070. Globally, buildings consume 40% of energy and are responsible for 1/3rd of carbon emissions.
  • Theme of the conference: Making the Zero-Carbon Transition in Buildings
  • The Indo-Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP) is a bilateral cooperation between the Ministry of Power, Government of India and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation. 

6th CICA summit to be held in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan will be host the 6th Conference on Confidence Building Measures and Interaction in Asia (CICA) summit in October 2022.

The summit meeting will be held on 12-13 October 2022 at the Kazakhstan capital, Nur-Sultan.

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is a multi-national forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.

The idea of convening CICA was first proposed by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, on 5 October 1992, at the 47th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. 

27 countries including India, China, and Pakistan are members of CICA.

  • The First summit meeting was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 4 June 2022. It was attended by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

India’s first Lithium- ion cell manufacturing plant to start its trial run

India’s first Lithium -cell -ion cell manufacturing plant will start its trial run on 16 September 2022. It will be inaugurated by Union minister of state for electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar. 


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The lithium cell -ion cell manufacturing plant has been set up by the Chennai based Munoth Industries limited (MIL) at Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh.
  • MIL has tied up with China-based Tianjin Lishen, BPI and Amprius for technology and the end product for its Lithium cell manufacturing plant.
  • MIL will invest Rs 799 crore in three phases.
  • In the first phase it will produce lithium-ion cells for the consumer electronics segment such as mobile phones, hearable and wearable devices, followed by an energy storage system and two-and-three wheel electric vehicles. 
  • According to the company India imports Rs 15,000 crore-Rs 20,000 crore of lithium-ion cells from China, South Korea, Vietnam and Hong Kong. With the establishment of the new facility, it would take care of 60% of India’s requirements. 

DBS bank to fund startups with Billionaire Venture

DBS Bank India limited  has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chennai based Billionaire Venture Incubation to set up  a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to fund  startups in India .

The SPV with $200 million capital will fund around 150 startups in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The Joint Venture will focus on funding startups in fintech, edtech and other critical areas. It will also provide technology and education support to startups.

Saudi Arabia, regains No.2 Oil supplier status to India in August 2022

According to a Reuters report, Saudi Arabia has become the second largest crude petroleum oil supplier to India in the month of August 2022.For the past three months, Russia was the second largest supplier of crude oil to India while Iraq is still the largest supplier of crude oil to India.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

Reason for Rise in Purchase of Russian Oil :

  • India started buying the Russian crude oil after the Russians started offering its crude oil at a heavy discount. This was done by Russia after heavy sanctions were imposed on it by the Western countries after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. 
  • India which never condemned Russian action started buying Russian oil as it was very cheap compared to the Saudi and other traditional suppliers. 
  • India during the March-July period became the second largest buyer of Russian oil after China.

Why Russian oil import has now declined ?

  • There are mainly two reasons for Saudi Arabia regaining its second spot. 
  • One, the Russians have considerably reduced the discount on its oil which has made its oil less attractive to India.
  • Secondly, India has a contractual obligation to buy oil from Saudi and it has to honour the contract. 
  • Indian purchase of Russian oil was a short term opportunity for India to buy cheap oil in a market where the international prices were high.

Top oil supplier to India in August month 2022 :

The top supplier of crude oil to India were as follows;

  1. Iraq 
  2. Saudi Arabia

  4. United Arab Emirates

  • In 2007 the United Nations general Assembly passed a resolution to observe 15 September as International Day of Democracy. 
  • The first International Day of Democracy was observed on 15 September 2008.

Theme 2022 :

  • The theme of the International Day of Democracy 2022: Protecting Press Freedom for Democracy
  • The theme focuses on the importance of media freedom to democracy, peace, and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals. According to the Democracy Index 2021 report of the Economic Intelligence Unit, India was ranked as 46th amongst 167 countries. Norway was at the top and it was considered as the most democratic country in the world.

Bhutan ratifies International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement

  • Bhutan's Ambassador to India Major General Wetsop Namgyal handed over the ratification document to Secretary ER Dammu Ravi in the presence of DG International Solar Alliance.

 International Solar Alliance :

  • It is a treaty-based intergovernmental organization whose primary function is to promote solar development by reducing the cost of financing and technology.

  • It is the nodal agency to implement 'One Sun, One World, One Grid'.

  • It aims to transfer the solar energy generated in a specific region to meet the electricity demand of another region.

  • It was launched by the Prime Minister of India and the President of France on 30 November 2015 at the Conference of the Parties (COP-21) to the UNFCCC in France (Paris) along with 121 solar resource rich nations.

  • Its key objectives include achieving a global potential of over 1000 GW of solar power generation capacity and mobilising about $1000 billion to invest in solar energy by 2030.

  • Member-106 countries have signed this Framework Agreement. 86 out of 106 countries have signed and ratified this Framework Agreement.

India’s Vinesh Phogat won the bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category at the World Wrestling Championships- 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia on 14 September.

  • Commonwealth Games - 2022 gold medalist Phogat defeated defending European champion Emma Malmgren of Sweden.
  • Vinesh, a three-time gold medalist in the qualification round, made a stunning comeback to beat Swedish rival Malmgren 8-0 in the bronze medal round.

  • Vinesh had made it to the bronze play-off via the repechage round after losing to Mongolia's Khulan Bakhuyag in their opening match on 13 September.

  • This is her second bronze medal at the Championships.

  • She had earlier earned a podium spot in the 2019 edition of the tournament in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Union Cabinet approves inclusion of tribes of five States in ST category

The Union Cabinet approved a proposal to include about 15 tribal communities in the Scheduled Tribes list in five states namely Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh on 14 September.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The Hatti community of Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh has been given ST status in the latest cabinet decision.
  • The cabinet approved the proposal to bring the Gond community living in 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh from the Scheduled Castes list to the Scheduled Tribes list. It consists of five subcategories (Dhuria, Nayak, Ojha, Pathri and Rajgond) of the Gond community.

  • Chhattisgarh has 12 castes out of the five states whose decision has been taken to include them in the Scheduled Tribes (ST).

  • In these, Bhuyan, Bhuyan, Bhuyan, Bhariya have been included in ST as synonyms of Bhariyabhumiya.

  • With this decision, the number of Scheduled Tribes in the country has increased from 705 to 720.

  • According to the 2011 census, the Scheduled Tribe population in the country is 10.43 crore, which is 8.6% of the total population of the country.

Cabinet approves signing of guarantees for hosting the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The Union Cabinet on 14 September 2022 approved the signing of guarantees for hosting the FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) Under-17 Women’s Football World Cup 2022 in India.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The World Cup will take place from 11th to 30th October 2022, in Bhubaneshwar, Navi Mumbai and Goa.
  • This seventh edition of the biennial youth tournament will be the first FIFA women's competition to be hosted by India.

  • In 2017, India hosted the FIFA U-17 Men's Football World Cup.

Financial Inclusion :

  • All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been sanctioned a financial outlay of Rs 10 crore for the maintenance of the playground, spectator capacity in the stadium, energy and cable laying and branding of the ground and training venue, etc.

Objectives :

  • Increasing the representation of women in football leadership and decision-making

  • Motivating more and more girls to play football in India

  • Advocating gender-inclusive participation by generalizing the concept of equal play from a young age

FIFA Tournament :

  • Organized by FIFA, the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup is the world championship for female players aged 17 or below 17.

  • The event started in 2008. 

  • The sixth edition of the event was held in Uruguay from 13 November to 1 December 2018.

  • Spain is the current champion of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

  • FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2022 will be the 7th edition of the tournament in which 16 teams including India will participate.

South Korea fines Google and Meta for violation of privacy law

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission has fined Google 69.2 billion won ($50 million) and Meta (earlier called Facebook) 30.8 billion won ($22 million) for violation of privacy law violation.

Both the companies were found guilty of collecting and analysing behavioural information of the customer without obtaining their prior consent.

  • He is credited with the creation of the 'Block System'.

  • He patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates in a reservoir near Pune city to increase the level and storage of water supply.

India launches ‘Urban Wastewater Scenario in India’

Denmark and the Indian Delegation launched a Whitepaper on ‘Urban Wastewater Scenario in India’ at International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress & Exhibition 2022 in Copenhagen, Denmark on 14 September.

Urban Wastewater Treatment Scenario :

  • 80 percent of household water is discharged into sewage.

  • According to statistics, 78 percent of sewage water remains untreated and is discharged into rivers, groundwater or lakes.

  • In India, only 10  percent of all sewage generated is treated. 

  • 32  percent of urban households are connected to a piped sewer system. 

  • An alarming 70  percent of urban wastewater remains untreated in rivers and seas.

  • Therefore, urban waste water management has become a major concern for the city authorities.

  • There is a dire need to take concrete steps to create a sustainable model of growth and development in sync with the environment and ecology.

Highlights of the White paper :

  • Need for wastewater treatment

  • Scope for improvement and augmentation in existing infrastructure and technologies

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has congratulated H E Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco on being re-elected as the President of Angola on 15 September.

  • With Lourenco securing another five-year term, the bilateral ties shared between India and Angola are expected to improve in terms of trade.

  • He has served as the president of Angola since 26 September 2017.

  • Prior to this, he was the Defence Minister from 2014 to 2017.

  • In September 2018, he became the Chairman of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola, the ruling party.
