“Padhe Bharat”, 100 days reading campaign by Ministry of Education

  • Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched a 100 days reading campaign 'Padhe Bharat' on 1st January 2022.
  • Padhe Bharat  campaign will focus on children studying in Balvatika to Grade 8.The reading campaign will be organised for 100 days (14 weeks) starting from 1st January 2022 to 10th April 2022.
  • The 100 days reading campaign will also focus on Indian languages including mother tongue/local/regional languages.
  • It is in this regard, 21st February which is celebrated as International Mother Tongue Day, has also been integrated with this campaign. This day will be celebrated with the activity of KahaniPadhoApniBhasa Main (Reading story in own language) across the country by encouraging children to read in their mother tongue/local language.

PM laid foundation of Major Dhyan Chand sports University in Meerut

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on 2nd January  2022, to inculcate sporting culture and establish world-class sporting infrastructure in the country.
  • The Sports University will be established at Salawa and Kaili villages of Sardhana town at an estimated cost of about 700 Crore rupees.
  • The Sports University will be equipped with modern and state-of-the-art sports infrastructure including synthetic Hockey ground, Football ground, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Kabaddi ground, Lawn tennis court, Gymnasium hall, Synthetic running stadium, Swimming pool, Multipurpose hall,  Cycling Velodrome etc. 
  • Meerut Is the  birthplace of hockey wizard  Major Dhyan Chand 
  • Last year the Government of India renamed India’s highest sporting award  the Rajeev Gandhi Khel Ratna award into Major Dhyanchand  Khel Ratna award.
  • Major Dhyanchand birth date 29 August is celebrated in India as the National Sports Day in india  

Nearly 6000 NGO loses FCRA Licence

  • Registration of 5,933 NGOs under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) 2010 lapsed on December 31, 2021, either for failure to apply for renewal before the due date or the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) rejecting their applications.
  • The remaining, which had applied for renewal, were refused, as MHA found their operations or accounts to be in violation of FCRA..
  • Oxfam India Trust, Jamia Millia Islamia and Indian Medical Association (IMA) are among these organisations.
  • Oxfam was found to have transferred over ₹4 crore to 140 small NGOs and educational institutions before September 2020. 
  • The amendments to the FCRA brought in September 2020 bar NGOs from transferring foreign funds to other domestic NGOs.
  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is the administrator of the FCRA 2010 act in India.

PM Modi releases the 10th Installment of PM KISAN

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released the  ₹20,900 crore to more than 10.09 crore farmers as the 10th instalment of financial benefit under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme on 1st January, 2022 via video conferencing.

  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM­KISAN) scheme, a financial benefit of ₹6,000 a year is provided to the eligible farmer families, payable in three equal instalments of ₹2,000.
  • The money is transferred directly to the bank account of the beneficiaries. 
  • During the virtual event, the Prime Minister also released an equity grant of more than ₹14 crore to about 351 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), benefiting 1.24 lakh farmers.
  • The PM-KISAN scheme was announced in the February 2019 Budget and the total amount provided under the scheme has touched about ₹1.8 lakh crore.

India gift Covaxin to Afghanistan

  • India has gifted 5 lakh Bharat Biotech-made Covaxin corona vaccines to Afghanistan. This is part of the 10 lakh vaccine to be gifted by the Government of India to Afghanistan .
  • The consignment was sent to Afghanistan by the Iranian  Mahan Airlines.
  • The consignment will be handed over to the UN official in the Indira Gandhi Children hospital  in Kabul .
  • India earlier sent vaccines to Afghanistan in February 2021 when Ashraf Ghani was in power in Afghanistan.
  • This is the first time India has sent vaccines to Afghanistan after the Taliban captured power in August 2021 and the Government of India does not recognise the Taliban government in Kabul.

Maitri Vaccine initiative of the Government of India 

  • In January 2021 ,Government of India launched the vaccine maitri initiative to supply domestically produced corona vaccine, Covishield made by Serum Institute of India  and  Bharat Biotech made Covaxin to the neighbouring countries in South Asia and to the poor and developing countries in the world .
  • The vaccines were  to be provided to these countries as a grant or on a commercial basis .The first country to receive the Serum Institute of India (SII) made  vaccine, Covishield  was  Bhutan and later Maldives on 20 January 2021.
  • The export of vaccine was halted by the Government of India in the month of April 2021 after the devastating second corona wave in India. The export of vaccines was put on hold by the Government of India.
  • The Government of India restarted the export of corona vaccine in the month of October 2021.
  • India is the largest producer of vaccine in the world.

Noted Odia writer Punya Prava Devi no more

  • Noted Odia writer and Kendra Sahitya Akademi award winner Punya Prava Devi, died  after a brief illness. She was 83 years old .
  • She had won the national award for best children’s literature in 1960 and Shishu Sahitya Ratna - Bal Sahitya Puraskar by the Kendra Sahitya Akademi in 2010.
