Delhi Dabbang wins the 8th Pro Kabaddi title

Delhi Dabang kabaddi team won the Pro Kabaddi League Season 8 trophy by defeating Patna Pirates 37-36 in the final held in Bengaluru. 

It was for the first time that Delhi Dabbang has won the Pro Kabbadi title.

Pro Kabaddi League 

  • Pro Kabaddi league is a Men’s professional kabaddi league launched in 2014 .

  • Eight teams participated in the first season of the Pro Kabaddi league held in 2014 In Mumbai  which was won by Jaipur Pink Panthers.

  • At present there are 12 teams which participate in the league .

  • Patna Pirates have won the title three times.

National Science Day

Every year February 28 is celebrated as National Science Day in India .

  • On this day, in 1928, Indian Physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman made an important discovery in the field of spectroscopy, which was later named after him – the Raman Effect.
  • For his work, CV Raman was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
  • Theme of this year's National Science Day : 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future'. 

Operation Ganga launched by the Government of India

The Ministry of External Affairs  has launched “Operation Ganga “ to evacuate the Indian citizens stranded in Ukraine .

The air space of Ukraine was closed after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia .

  • There are around 20,000 Indians in Ukraine and they are being told to reach the bordering countries of Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. 
  • From these countries they  are being evacuated through air by special operations of Air India  and Indigo Airlines  .
  • The Indians are being flown back from these countries through special flights of Air  India and Indigo . 
  • The entire cost of evacuation is being borne by the government of India .

Similar operations in past 

The Government of India has undertaken similar evacuation of Indians from conflict zones in the past 

 Evacuation from Kuwait in 1990

When Saddam Hussein's Iraqi government invaded Kuwait in 1990 ,a massive operation was launched by the government of India to rescue the Indians from Kuwait . It involved a massive rescue operation by Air India, Indian Airlines and Indian Air Force. It brought back 1,70,000 Indians from Kuwait .

 The effort of Air India was later recognized by the Guinness World Records as  the being the largest evacuation by a civil airliner. 

There was no code name for the operation.  

Operation Sukoon 2006

It was launched by the Indian Navy to rescue Indian, Nepalese, Sri Lankan  from Lebanon after Israel invaded Lebanon to punish radical  islamic group Hezbollah

Operation Safe coming  2011

It was launched by the Indian Navy and Air India to evacuate Indians fleeing from the Libyan Civil war .

Operation Rahat 2015 

It was launched by the Indian Navy, Air Force and Air India to rescue Indians and foreigners from Yemen after Saudi Arabian led coalition forces  intervened in the Yemen Civil war .

Operation Dev Shakti  2021

It was launched by the Indian Airforce and Air India to bring back Indians from Afghanistan after the Taliban  captured the Afghanistan capital Kabul on 15  August 2021.

Kolkata Thunderbolt wins the inaugural Prime Volleyball League

Kolkata Thunderbolts defeated Ahmedabad Defenders in straight sets to win the final of the inaugural Rupay Prime Volleyball League championship in Hyderabad on 27 February 2022.

  • Prime Volleyball League (PVL), also known as Ru pay Prime Volleyball League.
  • It is a professional men indoor volleyball championship organised by Baseline Venture.
  • Total  seven teams participated in the league.

World's largest Aircraft destroyed by Russians

The largest plane in the world, Ukraine's Antonov-225 cargo plane was destroyed by Russian strikes outside Kyiv on the fourth day of the Russian  invasion on 27 February 2022.

  • The aircraft was stationed at the Hostomel (also known as Gostomel) airport near the Ukrainian capital  Kyiv.
  • The aircraft was unique to the world, at 84 metres long (276 feet) it could transport up to 250 tonnes of cargo at a speed of up to 850 kilometres per hour . It made its first flight in 1988.

  • It was named "Mriya", which means "dream" in Ukrainian.

Madhuri Puri Buch to be the new Chairperson of SEBI

Madhuri Puri Buch has been named the chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for three years. 

  •  She is the first woman to head the capital market regulator as the tenure of incumbent Ajay Tyagi ends on February 28, 2022.

  • Buch will not only be  the first woman but also the first person from the private sector to be appointed as the chairperson of SEBI. 

  • She started her career with ICICI Bank and later went on to become Managing Director(  MD) and  Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at ICICI Securities from Feb 2009 to May 2011. In 2011, she left for Singapore to join Greater Pacific Capital LLP.

How are chief of the various financial regulating bodies in India selected 

The candidates are shortlisted by the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC) headed by the cabinet secretary. 

Based upon interactions, the FSRASC recommended the name to the appointments committee of the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Securities Exchange Board of India(SEBI) was set up on 12 April 1988 and it was given statutory status by the SEBI act 1992 on 30 January 1992.

It comes under the Ministry of Finance , Government of India .

  • It is the regulator of the Capital market and Commodities market in India .

  • Capital markets include securities markets and Secondary markets like stock exchanges .

  • The first SEBI chairman was Dr S A Dave (1988-90)

  • Madhuri Puri Buch will be the 10th Chairperson of the SEBI.

  • U.K.Sinha was the longest-serving chairman . He was chairman from 18 February 2011  to  10 February 2017 (around 6 years).

India win T-20 series against Sri Lanka 3-0 and equal Afghanistan record

India defeated the Sri Lankan cricket  team to win the T-20 cricket series 3-0 . With the victory, India also equalled Afghanistan’s  record of 12 consecutive wins  in the T-20  international cricket. 

Indian team captain was Rohit Sharma and Sri Lankan team captain was Dasun Shanaka .

First T-20 Match 

  • It was held at the Ekana Cricket Stadium or Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on  24 February 2022.
  • India won by 62 runs .
  • Ishan Kishan of India was the Player  of the match.

Second T-20 match 

  • It was played  at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium, Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh on  26 February 2022..   
  • India defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets.
  • Shreyas Iyer was Player of the match 

Third T-20 match 

  • It was also played at Dharamshala on 27 February 2022.
  • India won the match by 6 wickets .
  • Shreyas Iyer was the Player of the match 

Shreyas Iyer was declared the Player of the series .
