Government set up a panel for framework on Indian University to start foreign campus

The Government of India has set up a 16 member panel to lay down a road map for the Indian Universities to set up a foreign campuses.

The panel is headed by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) council standing committee chairman K Radhakrishnan.

  • The committee includes  the directors of seven IITs of   Dhanbad, Madras,Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagpur,  Kanpur, Guwahati,  the vice chancellors (VCs) of four central universities — Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University and University of Hyderabad and the director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
  • The committee was set up after IIT Delhi submitted a proposal to set up a campus in Saudi Arabia and in Egypt.

Jammu and Kashmir the most dangerous place for Journalist

According to the India Press Freedom Report 2021 at least 8 journalists were killed, 108 attacked and 13 media houses or newspapers were targeted across India in 2021.

The report released by Rights and Risk Analysis Groups says that the maximum incidents happened in Jammu and Kashmir (25), followed by Uttar Pradesh (23) and Madhya Pradesh (16).

In the Freedom of Press Index 2021 published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), India was ranked 142 out of 180 countries in the world. Norway was ranked as the country having the most free of Press in the world and was ranked at the top.

“BrahMos” and “Uran” missiles successfully test-fired

Indian Navy successfully test-fired land-based “BrahMos” and ship-launched “Uran (Kh-35)” anti-ship missiles on 2nd February 2022.

 

  • The missiles were tested by the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was fired from a ground-based launcher and the Uran anti-ship missile was launched from the Indian Navy’s Guided Missile Corvette. It successfully destroyed retired Naval ship LCU-38, which was used as target practice. 
  • Brahmos cruise missile has been developed jointly by India and Russia and India will export the missile to the Philippines in a $375 million deal.

Uran missile or Kh-35 missile is a Russian subsonic cruise anti-ship missile which is being inducted in the Indian Navy.

Prominent film personality Ramesh Deo passed away in Mumbai on 2 February 2022.  He acted in a number of Hindi and Marathi films. His notable films were Anand,Khilona, Mere Apne etc. where he played  supporting roles.

CCI penalty on Tyre manufacturing companies for price manipulation upheld by the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has upheld the Competition Commission of India (CCI) decision to impose a penalty on Major tyre manufacturing companies for price manipulation.

  • CCI had imposed a fine of around Rs ₹1,788 crore for cartelisation on Apollo Tyres, MRF, CEAT, Birla Tyres, JK Tyre and Industries and Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA). 
  • CCI imposed penalties of ₹425.53 crore on Apollo Tyres, ₹622.09 crore on MRF Ltd, ₹252.16 crore on CEAT Ltd, ₹309.95 crore on JK Tyre and ₹178.33 crore on Birla Tyres and a fine of ₹8.4 lakh was imposed on ATMA.
  • The tyre companies were found guilty of section 3 of the Competition act 2002, which prohibits anti competitive agreements. 
  • According to CCI these tyre companies had exchanged price-sensitive data amongst them through the platform of ATMA, and had taken collective decisions on the prices of tyres.

Neeraj Chopra nominated for Laureus World Sports Award

Tokyo Olympic 2020 gold medalist, Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been nominated for the prestigious 2022 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award.

  • He is the third Indian to be nominated for a  Laureus award after cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar (for the best sporting moment in the last 20 years in 2020) and wrestler Vinesh Phogat (for the World Sporting Comeback category for 2019).
  • The other five sportspersons who have been nominated for the Breakthrough award are: 
    • Britain’s Emma Raducanu (Tennis)
    • Russian' Daniil Medvedev (Tennis)
    • Spanish Footballer, Pedri 
    • Venezuelan athlete Yulimar Rojas (Triple jump)
    • Australia’s Ariarne Titmus (Swimmer)

It is an annual award ceremony established in the year 1999 by the patrons of Laureus Sport for Good Foundation to honour successful individuals and teams from the sporting world.
