India to diplomatically boycott Beijing Winter olympics

The Ministry of External Affairs has announced that India will diplomatically boycott the 24th Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing, China from 4 to 20 February 2022. It means that no Indian government officials will participate in the opening and the closing ceremony of the event. The Prasar Bharti Chief Executive Officer, Shashi Shekhar Vempati has also announced that Doordarshan will not telecast the opening and the closing ceremony of the game.

 

  • India announced this move after China included a regiment commander, Qi Fabao of the People Liberation Army (PLA)  involved in the June 15, 2020 clash with the Indian Army in Galwan as one of the torch bearers of the Winter Olympics.
  • However the only Indian player, Arif Khan of Jammu and Kashmir, will compete in the Slalom and Giant Slalom event. 
  • The US, Australia,Canada, United Kingdom, Japan and New Zealand  are also diplomatically boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics over protest against the Chinese government treatment of Ugyher muslims in China and their human rights violation  . 
  • Japan though has not officially announced a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics but as a protest against the human rights abuse in China, it is not sending any official delegation to the game .
  • However, athletes from these countries will participate in the games.

Chhattisgarh Government launches RGGB KMNY scheme

The Bhupesh Baghel led Congress party government in Chhattisgarh has launched  ‘Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Bhoomihin Krishi Majdoor Nyay Yojana on 3 February 2022 at Raipur.

The scheme was inaugurated by the former Congress party president and Member of Lok Sabha from Wayanad constituency, Kerala, Rahul Gandhi.

  • He also laid the foundation stone of the ‘Chhattisgarh Amar Jawan Jyoti’, which has been designed to resemble Delhi’s India Gate and the Amar Jawan Jyoti at the headquarters of the 4th battalion of Chhattisgarh Armed Force at Raipur. It will be an eternal flame as a tribute to the soldiers and security force who embraced martyrdom in the line of duty.
  • He also launched the Rajiv Yuva Mitan Club scheme.
  • He laid the foundation stone of “Gandhi Sevagram” in the upcoming new capital of Chhattisgarh at Nava Raipur.

Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Bhoomihin Krishi Majdoor Nyay Yojana (RGGB KMNY)

This is a first of its  kind scheme in India where around 3.55 lakh families of the landless rural labourers,  barbers, blacksmiths, priests, forest produce collectors and shepherds, among others will get the benefit of the scheme. 

  • This scheme is only for the residents of the state.

Benefits

The Chhaitsgarh government will transfer Rs 6000/year into the bank account of the beneficiaries. 

  • The amount will be transferred in three installments of Rs 2000 each.

Rajiv Yuva Mitan club 

The Rajiv Yuva mitan scheme aims to connect the young people of the state for developing their leadership skills and inculcating social responsibilities in them.

  • A total 13,269 such clubs will be formed in urban municipalities/corporations and in panchayats.
  • People in the age group of 15 to 40 years will be part of these clubs. 
  • These clubs will get aid of Rs 1 lakh per year in four installments for various activities.

Nava Raipur Atal Nagar is being developed as a new capital of Chhattisgarh. 

Uttar Pradesh selected as the best state tableau of Republic Day parade 2022

The Government of India has announced the best tableaux and best marching contingents of the Republic Day parade 2022 on 4 February 2022.

A three member panel was appointed by the Government of India to judge the best performing marching contingent and tableaux at the Republic day 2022.

Best tableau among the States/Union Territories

12 States and Union Territories tableau participated in the Republic day parade 2022.

  • The Uttar Pradesh tableau  based on the theme ‘One District One Product and Kashi Vishwanath Dham’ was declared as the best 
  • At the second place was Karnataks’s for its tableau based on ‘Cradle of Traditional Handicrafts’. 
  • The third position went to Meghalaya for its tableau on ‘Meghalaya’s 50 years of Statehood and its tribute to women-led cooperative societies & SHGs’.

Best tableau in the category of Central Ministries/Departments

Total nine tableaux of Central Ministries/Departments had participated in the parade.

  • The tableaux of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Civil Aviation have been declared as joint winners.
  • The theme of the tableau of Ministry of Education & Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship was ‘National Education Policy’.
  • The theme of the tableau of the Ministry of Civil Aviation was ‘Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik’.

Special Prize

The tableaux of the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (CPWD), based on the theme ‘Subhash @125’ and the ‘Vande Bharatam’ dance group have been selected for the special prize category.

Best Marching Contingent

Amongst Armed Forces: Indian Navy marching contingent was adjudged as the best marching contingent.

Central Armed Police Force (CAPF)/other auxiliary forces: Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been named the best marching contingent.

Popular Choice

For the first time the general public chose the best marching contingents and tableaux. The voting period was open from January 25-31, 2022 at the MyGov platform.

Best tableau among the States/Union Territories

Maharashtra was voted as the best Tableau among the States/UTs in the popular choice category. The tableau of Maharashtra was based on the theme ‘Biodiversity and State Bio-symbols of Maharashtra’.

Best Marching Contingent

Amongst Armed Forces: Indian Air Force was voted as the best marching contingent among the three Services.

Central Armed Police Force (CAPF)/other auxiliary forces: Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) received maximum votes on MyGov as the best marching contingent.

World Cancer Day

  • The theme for World Cancer Day 2022 is "Close the Care Gap".
  • This day was declared as World Cancer Day by the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC) as a "global uniting initiative."

ISRO will launch Chandrayaan 3 in August 2022

Union Minister of State in the Department of Atomic Energy of India Dr. Jitendra Singh on 3rd February 2022 informed the Lok Sabha that the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO’s) Chandrayaan-3 is scheduled for launch in August 2022.

  • The Chandrayaan-1 mission was launched on 22nd October 2008 using the PSLV-C11. The major discovery of the Chandrayaan-1 mission is the detection of water (H2O) and hydroxyl (OH) on the lunar surface. 
  • The Chandrayaan-2 mission was launched on 22nd July 2019. It comprised an Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) and Rover (Pragyan) sent aboard the country’s most powerful geosynchronous launch vehicle the GSLV-Mk3 However, lander Vikram which to land on the moon’s South Pole, instead of a controlled landing, ended up crash-landing on September 7, 2019. It still has a fully operational orbiter.
  • Chandrayaan-3 will be the follow-up mission of Chandrayaan-2. It will only include Lander and Rover.
  • Other major projects of ISRO such as first manned mission Gaganyaan and mission to Sun, Aditya Solar Mission are also in the pipeline for this year.
  • The number of missions planned by the ISRO from January 2022 to December 2022 are 19.

Some of the important mission are::

  • RISAT-1A PSLV C5-2 Satellite (scheduled for launch in mid-February 2022).
  • OCEANSAT-3 and INS 2B ANAND on PSLV C-53 (scheduled for launch in March 2022).
  • SSLV-D1 Micro SAT (scheduled for launch in April 2022).
  • GSAT-24  through the Ariane 5 rocket owned by Arianespace (scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2022).

IS leader Abu Ibrahim Al-Hashmi Al-Qurayshi killed during US raid in Syria

The United States President Joe Biden declared on 3rd February 2022, that the the Islamic State (IS) leader- Abu Ibrahim al-Hashmi al-Qurayshi was killed during a US special force operation  at his  hideout  in the town of Atmeh, which is in the northern Idlib province of Syria close to the border with Turkey.

  • Qurayshi blew himself up with the bomb when the US forces approached his compound which killed him and the members of his family.
  •  An Iraqi, Abu Ibrahim Al-Hashimi Al-Qurayshi also known as "the Destroyer”, became the leader of the Islamic State in 2019 after the death of Abu Bakr al Baghadadi.  

Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar appointed as the Chairman of UGC

Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar,Vice-Chancellor,Jawaharlal Nehru University has been appointed to the post of Chairman,University Grants Commission(UGC) by the Government of India.

  • He has been appointed for a period of five years.
  • The post of the UGC chairman fell vacant on December 7 after Prof D P Singh, who had taken charge in 2018, resigned upon turning 65.  .
  • Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar is an academician, administrator and author who has been the acting Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) since January 2021 after completion of his tenure in December 2020.
  • He  was  earlier a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi.
