Union Government relaxes moong and Urad limit for Madhya Pradesh under the Price support Scheme

The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in a relief to the Madhya Pradesh farmers has relaxed the existing purchase limit of 25 quintals for purchase of Moong and Urad under the Price Support Scheme  during summer season 2021-22 .

  • It has been increased to 40 quintals per farmer per day.
  • This order was issued on 6 September 2022.

Price Support Scheme :

  • It has been launched by the government of India . 
  • Under this scheme when the prices of commodities fall below the Minimum Support price (MSP) , state and central notified procurement nodal agencies like NAFED(National Agricultural Marketing Federation of India), purchase commodities directly from the farmers at MSP under specified Fair Average Quality, 
  • This helps and protects the farmers against the economic loss in farming.

Rajnath Singh is on a five-day visit to Mongolia and Japan beginning 5 September 2022 with an aim to expand India's strategic and defence ties with the two countries.

Visit to Mongolia :

His visit to Mongolia from 5-7 September 2022 is the first-ever tour to the East Asian country by an Indian defence minister.

He met the Mongolian defence minister Saikhanbayar Gursed in Ulaanbaatar on 6 September 2022.

The Minister also met President of Mongolia, U. Khurelsukh.

India and Mongolia share warm and cordial bilateral relations. Mongolia regards India as its “third” and a “spiritual neighbour”.

India has provided a loan of USD 1.236 billion to Mongolia to build a 1.5 million metric tonnes oil refinery near Sainshand in southern Dornogovi province of Mongolia.

India's first intranasal covid vaccine by Bharat Biotech gets DCGI nod

India's first intranasal Covid vaccine developed by Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech limited has received DCGI approval on 6 September 2022 for primary immunization against the infection for people above the age of 18.

  • The drugs can now be inhaled by the patient through a spray and there is no need for any injection through needles.
  • In a tweet published on 6 September 2022, Mandaviya said that Bharat Biotech's ChAd36-SARS-CoV-S COVID-19 (Chimpanzee Adenovirus Vectored) recombinant nasal vaccine has been approved for primary immunization against COVID-19 in 18+ age group for restricted use in emergency situation.
  • The first indigenous vaccine named Covaxin against covid-19 was also developed by Bharat Biotech.

Suresh Raina Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket

Former India and Uttar Pradesh cricket player, Suresh Raina has announced his retirement from "all formats of cricket," confirming the end of his IPL and India domestic career.  He had already retired from International cricket in 2020.

Who is constructing it ?

  • The Logistics Park will be constructed by Container Corporation of India Limited.

NTPC acquires Jhabua Power Ltd through Insolvency and Bankruptcy resolution route

India’s largest power generating company NTPC ltd. has acquired the 600 MW Jhabua Power limited company of the bankrupt Gautam Thapar owned Avantha Group through Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process initiated by National Company Law Tribunal, Kolkata, (NCLT).


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Jhabua Power Limited (JPL) has an operational thermal power capacity of 1 x 600 MW located in Seoni, Madhya Pradesh.
  • It is the first asset that NTPC is taking over through the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) route. The estimated deal size is Rs 1,830 crore. 
  •  A consortium of secured lenders led by Axis Bank approached the NCLT after JPL failed to repay the loan it had taken. 
  • Under the deal which was worked out between the lenders, NTPC and JPL, NTPC will hold 50 percent equity shares of the JPL and will also have all the management rights and control over the company.
  • NTPC will pay Rs 1830 crore to the lenders of JPL and also will offer 50 % share in the JPL to the lenders.

Tea export in the first 6 months of the year increases to 96.89 million Kg

According to the Tea Board of India, Kolkata, the total export of tea during the first six months January to June 2022 has increased to 96.89 million kg as compared to 86.46 million kg in the similar previous period.

Total value of exports in rupee terms increased to Rs 2,532.67 crore in the current first half as compared to Rs 2306.77 crore in the previous similar period.

Major Tea Export Market for India : 

The largest export market for India is still the Commonwealth of Independent countries (CIS). CIS is a group of 9 countries who were once part of the Soviet Union. It includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The export of tea has decline to the CIS countries in the first six month of the current year due to Russia-Ukraine war. It has declined to 20.58 million kg during the current six months against 21.04 million kg in the previous period of 2021.

Country wise :

The largest export market for Indian tea was the United Arab Emirates (UEA).   It imported 15.86 million kg during the current first six months as against 6.76 million kg in the previous similar period.

In second place was Russia with an import of 14.76 million kg.

At the third place was Iran with an import of 11.43 million kg in the current first half as against 10.04 million kg in the previous period.

India is the 2nd largest producer of tea in the world after China. It is the fourth largest exporter of tea in the world.

CCI approves the acquisition of BillDesk by PayU Payment

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on 5 September 2022, through a tweet said it has approved payments major PayU's $4.7 billion (about Rs 34,400 crore) acquisition of online payments firm Bill Desk.

  • It has approved the acquisition of 100% of the equity share capital of IndiaIdeas.com Limited (IIL) owner of BillDesk by PayU Payments Private Limited (PayU India) under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002.
  • Last year in August, Netherland based global consumer internet group and technology investor Prosus NV had announced that an agreement had been reached between PayU and the shareholders of BillDesk to acquire BillDesk for $4.7 billion.
  • The PayU-BillDesk deal is the second-largest buyout in the Indian internet sector after Walmart’s $ 16 billion acquisition of e-commerce major Flipkart in 2018. This will involve the merger of the payments gateway business of two of India's largest players
  • PayU India and BillDesk primarily provide payment aggregation services that enable merchants (and other entities) to receive payments from their customers across various digital payment methods.

Preventive detentions in 2021 up by 23.7% compared to year before

With over 1.1 lakh people in preventive detention, 2021 saw an increase of over 23.7% in preventive detention compared to a year ago, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau.

IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Of these, 483 were in custody under the National Security Act.
  • A total of more than 24,500 people placed in preventive custody were either in custody or were still in custody till the end of last year.

  • According to the 2017 NCRB report, a total of 67,084 people were detained in the year 2017 as a preventive measure.

  • The number of persons placed under detention has been increasing steadily since 2017. 

  • The number is more than 98,700 in 2018 and more than 1.06 lakh in 2019 and 89,405 in 2020.

  • According to data related to 2021, last year 1,10,683 people were placed under preventive detention.

Preventive Detention :

  • It is a statutory power under the state, under which the state can detain any person to prevent him from committing any possible offence.

  • Article 22 of the Indian Constitution provides protection to persons arrested or taken into custody.

  • There are two types of detention - punitive and preventive.

  • Under punitive detention, a person is punished after trial and conviction in court for the offence committed by him.

  • Under preventive detention, a person is detained without trial and without conviction by the court.

Tamil Nadu requests for Supreme Court bench in Chennai

Chief Minister MK Stalin has again requested for the establishment of a regional bench of the Supreme Court in Chennai and allowed Tamil to be used as one of the official languages in the Madras High Court.

  • The outgoing Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu had suggested bifurcation of the Supreme Court into four regional benches for speedy disposal of cases.
  • He also emphasized on representation of all sections in the appointment of judges.

  • However, the Supreme Court has said on this demand that there is no need for such benches outside Delhi.

Why is the Supreme Court located in New Delhi ?

  • Article 130 of the Constitution of India says the Supreme Court shall sit in Delhi or in such other place or places, as the Chief Justice of India may, with the approval of the President, from time to time, appoint.

  • This means that the law allows the establishment of benches of the Supreme Court at several places with the concurrence of the Chief Justice of India and the President.

  • The Law Commission in its 229th report had suggested the establishment of a Constitution Bench of the Court at New Delhi and four other Benches in different regions of India.

PM Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina jointly unveils Unit-I of Maitree Super Thermal Power Project

  • The project is being constructed under India's concessional financing scheme. 
  • This will add 1320 MW to the national grid of Bangladesh.

  • The first unit of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant will go into commercial operation early October.

  • Unit-II of the power plant, also known as the Rampal coal-fired power project, is expected to be commissioned early next year.

India-Bangladesh delegation level talks :

  • India-Bangladesh delegation level talks under the leadership of PM Modi and Hasina began at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

  • The Prime Minister of Bangladesh is on a four-day visit to India to strengthen the multi-faceted ties between the two countries.

Centre announces constitution of National level Committee for drafting of National Cooperation Policy

The Union Home and Cooperation Minister, Amit Shah on 6 September announced the constitution of a National level committee for drafting of the national cooperation policy document.

  • The national level committee, headed by former Union cabinet minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, comprises 47 members from all parts of the country.
  • The committee comprises experts from the cooperative sector, representatives of national, state and district cooperatives, secretary cooperatives and registrars of cooperative societies of states and union territories.

National Cooperation Policy :

  • The new National Cooperation Policy is being formulated to realize the vision of 'Sahakar Se Samriddhi ' under the leadership of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

  • Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had recently announced that a National Cooperative Policy would soon be formulated to take a holistic approach to the above PACS cooperatives.

  • The new National Cooperative Policy document is being prepared with a view to fulfill the mandate given to the new Ministry of Cooperation.

  • The current National Policy on Cooperation was formulated in 2002.

  • Its objective was to facilitate the all-round development of co-operative societies and to provide them with the necessary support, encouragement and assistance.

Objectives of the new policy :

  • To empower the cooperative movement in the country and strengthen its reach at the grassroots level

General Pandey was honoured during his visit to the Himalayan countries at a special ceremony at the President's official residence 'Sheetal Niwas' in the Nepalese capital.

  • He was also presented with a sword and scroll during the official function.

  • The practice follows a seven-decade-old tradition of conferring honorary titles on the army chiefs of both countries.

  • Commander-in-Chief General KM Cariappa was the first Indian Army Chief to be conferred with this title in the year 1950.

  • In November 2021, the Chief of the Nepalese Army, General Prabhu Ram Sharma was also made an Honorary General of the Indian Army by President Ram Nath Kovind at a ceremony in New Delhi.

  • On behalf of the Government of India, General Manoj Pandey provided training equipment to the Nepalese Army along with light vehicles which will help in enhancing the capability of the Nepalese Army personnel.

  • General Manoj Pandey arrived in Kathmandu on 4 September for a five-day official visit to Nepal.

Subroto Cup International Football Tournament begins in New Delhi

The Subroto Cup International Football Tournament kicked off today on 6 September evening in New Delhi.

IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The 61st edition of the tournament will be staged across four venues in Delhi till 13th of October.
  • The first match of the tournament is being played between NCC vs Chandigarh.

  • The matches of the tournament will be played at Dr BR Ambedkar Stadium, Tejas Football Ground, Subroto Park and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

  • It has not been organised for two years due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

  • The tournament will be organised in three categories including sub-junior boys (U-14), junior girls (U-17) and junior boys (U-17).

  • A total of 92 teams will participate in the three categories, in which an international team will also participate in the junior boys' section as a team from Bangladesh.

Subroto Cup International Football Tournament :

  • It is an annual school football tournament that was inaugurated in 1960 by the first Indian Air Force Chief, Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee.

  • It is organised by Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society (SMSES) and the Indian Air Force.

  • It has been the basis for the achievements of many former Indian football stalwarts like Shyam Thapa and Bhaichung Bhutia.

  • International stalwarts such as Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos (both in 2016) and Pele (2015) have graced the tournament as guest of honor in its earlier editions.

Prize of Tournament :

  • The total prize money of the tournament is more than Rs 23 lakh.

  • In addition, a selection committee of eminent footballers will select 25 outstanding players in each category to award the scholarship.

  • All the selected players will be awarded a scholarship (one-time grant) of Rs 25000 in Junior Boys and Junior Girls category and Rs 15000 for Sub-Junior Boys category.
