8 March is celebrated around the world as International Women's Day. It was observed for the first time in 1911.

Theme of 2022 International women's day : “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

That is, gender equality is necessary in society for a stable and equal tomorrow.

The colours of Women's Day are purple, green and white. Because purple is a symbol of justice and dignity. On the other hand, green colour symbolises hope and white colour symbolises peace and purity.

Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav launched to bring girls to formal education

The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD), in partnership with the Union  Ministry of Education and United Nations Children Funds,(UNICEF), has launched a  campaign  Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav  to bring back out of school adolescent girls in India to the formal education or skilling system  at New Delhi on 7 march 2022.

  • The main aim of the campaign is to increase the enrolment and retention of girls between 11-14 years of age in school.

  • The Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav campaign will be under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)  initiatives of the Ministry of Women and Child Development , targeting more than 400,000 out of school adolescent girls as primary beneficiaries.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao 

  • The scheme was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Panipat, Haryana on 22 January 2015.

  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao  is a joint scheme of the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, Union Ministry of Education and Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare .

The main aim of the scheme is to ;

  • Prevention of gender biased sex selective elimination 

  • Ensuring survival and protection of the girl child 

  • Ensuring education and participation of the girl child 

UNICEF 

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is a successor to the  United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, which was set up on 11 December , 1946 by the United Nation .

  • It was later renamed as United Nation Children Funds in 1953 but the acronym is still UNICEF.

  • It works for the welfare of women and children's especially in developing countries .

Union Minister Narayan Rane launches “SAMARTH” for women entrepreneur

On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2022, Union Minister for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Shri Narayan Rane, launched a Special Entrepreneurship Promotion Drive for Women -"SAMARTH" on 7th March 2022 at New Delhi.

  • The Scheme will provide Skill Development and Market Development Assistance to women and more than 7500 women candidates from rural and sub- urban areas in 2022-23.

  • The aim of the scheme is to provide them an opportunity to be self-reliant and independent by undertaking self-employment opportunities.

Under the Samarth initiative of the Ministry, following benefits will be available to aspiring and existing women entrepreneurs:

  • 20% Seats in free Skill Development Programs organised under skill development schemes of the Ministry will be allocated for Women. More than 7500 women will be benefitted.

  • 20% of MSME Business Delegations sent to domestic & international exhibitions under the schemes for Marketing Assistance implemented by the Ministry will be dedicated to women-owned MSMEs.

  • 20% Discount on annual processing fee on National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) Commercial Schemes.

  • Special Drive for registration of women-owned MSMEs under Udyam Registration.

Union Rural Development Ministry to focus on rural women contribution for its Iconic week celebration

The Union Rural Development Ministry is celebrating its Iconic week under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav from 7th to 13th  March, 2022.

The theme of the Iconic week is “Naye Bharat ki Naari”. It will focus on the contribution of rural women in India .

Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav 

  • Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements.

  • The official journey of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav commenced on 12th March 2021 which started a 75-week countdown to our 75th anniversary of independence and will end post a year on 15th August 2023.

Kerala High Court to set up an all women bench on International Women's day

For the first time, Kerala High court has constituted an all-women bench on the International Women's day. This is the first time an all-women judge bench has been set up in the Kerala High Court.

  • It will  hear a review petition filed by the Kerala government  on the case relating to the contribution of the Guruvayur Devaswom Fund to the  state government’s Disaster Relief Fund.

  • Justice Anu Sivaraman,  Justice V Shircy and  Justice M R Anitha are the  members of the women’s only full bench.

  • The Kerala High Court is a  joint High Court of Kerala and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep .

  • The seat of the High Court is Kochi, Kerala .

Women Judge in India 

  • The first woman judge in India was Anna Chandy, who was born in Travancore, now in  Kerala.  

  • She was appointed as a judge in a munsif court in Travancore, Kerala in 1937.

  • She was appointed as the Kerala High Court Judge in 1959.

  • The first woman judge of the Supreme court in India was  M. Fatima Bibi, also from Kerala. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1989. 

The first woman Chief Justice of a High Court in India was Leila Seth. She was appointed as the  chief Justice of the Himachal High Court in 1991.

Axis Bank launches a co branded credit card with Airtel

Indian private bank Axis bank has launched a co-branded credit card  for the customers of the second largest telecom company in India,Airtel.

  • Airtel being a telecom company cannot issue credit cards on its own .

  • Only banks in India regulated by the Reserve Bank of India can issue credit cards in India .

Microsoft unveils fourth data center in India

American multinational company Microsoft  will set up its fourth data centre in Hyderabad, Telangana. It is being set up with an investment of Rs 15,000 crore over 15 years.

  • The data centre will become operational by 2025.

  • Microsoft set up its first data centre in India in 2015 and at present its data centre is operational in Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.

  •  It will offer the entire Microsoft portfolio across the cloud, data solutions, artificial  intelligence (AI), productivity tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) with advanced data security, for  enterprises, start-ups, developers, education, and government institutions.

  • This will help customers in India thrive in a cloud and AI-enabled digital economy.

India tops the medal table at the World Shooting Championships

India topped the medal table at the recently concluded ISSF (International Shooting Sports Federation) Rifle/Pistol  world cup in Cairo, Egypt .

  • The event was held from 28 February to 8 March 2022.

  • India won a total of 7 medals:4 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medals.

  • Norway came second with a total of 6 medals:  3 Gold medals, 1 Silver medals and  2 Bronze medals .

  • Women’s 25m pistol team – Rahi Sarnobat, Esha Singh and Rhythm Sangwan

  • Men’s 10m air pistol - Saurabh Chaudhary

  • The International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) organizes four world cups in a calendar year for rifle/pistol events . 

  • In 2022  the venue of the World cups in chronological order are as follows: Jakarta (Indonesia), Cairo (Egypt), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Baku (Azerbaijan).
