Amit Shah unveils, ‘Savaj’ , mascot for the 36th National Games

Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperatives Amit Shah unveiled the Logo and Mascot of the 36th National Games at the EKA Arena TransStadia in Ahmedabad on 4 September 2022.

  • The mascot is named as Savaj which means cub in Gujarati. It is a lion cub. 
  • The theme of the anthem is Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
  • The theme of the 36th National Games is ’Sports for Unity.'

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other distinguished guests were present.

36th National Games :

  • The National Games will see a total of 36 sports and participation from all 28 states and eight Union Territories.
  • Yogasana and Mallakhamba sports will be introduced for the first time in the National Games.
  • The Games will take place in six cities of Gujarat -- Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar.
  • In the previous edition in Kerala in 2015, there were 33 sports.
  • The Games are happening after a gap of five years.
  • Goa was to hold this edition of the Games but multiple delays, mainly due to infrastructure-related issues, led to postponement several times.
  • Services Sports Promotion Board topped the medal charts in each of the three previous editions.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul creates a world record in International T-20

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul created a new world record in the international T 20 matches. Their opening partnership of 54 runs in 5.1 overs against Pakistan in the Asia cup was the 14th 50 plus partnership. 

They broke the record held by Ireland’s pair of Paul Stirling and  Kevin O’Brien of 13 such partnerships.

The match is being played at the Dubai international Cricket Stadium, United Arab Emirates. 

India has scored 181 for 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Pakistan are batting.

Germany won the men’s and women’s title at the Leh Edition of UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Cup 2022 edition held today

The German Cyclist won both the men and women category In the Leh Edition of UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup held in Leh, Ladakh on 4 September 2022.

Twenty international, 55 national and local cyclists participated in this world cup competition.

The men's category was won by Felix Klausmann and the women's section champion was Marion Fromberger.

The UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup was held in Leh Ladakh for the first time on 4 September. It was organised by the Ladakh Police in association with City Mountain Bike and Cycling Federation of India.

Earlier, Ladakh LG RK Mathur, MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, SS Khandare flagged off various raids that are part of world cup eliminator. 

Former chairman of Tata Sons, Cyrus Mistry killed in road accident in Maharashtra

Cyrus Mistry, who succeeded Ratan Tata as chairman of Tata Sons but was later unceremoniously ousted, was killed in a car accident in Maharashtra's Palghar on 4 September 2022. He was 54.

He was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car.

His father, Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry recently died at the age of 93.  The Shapoorji Pallonji Group has built luxury hotels, stadiums, palaces and factories across Asia.

Bhartaul in Bareilly district becomes first village in UP to have RO water in every household

Bhartaul in Bithiri Chainpur block of Bareilly district has become the first Uttar Pradesh village where each household is being supplied RO water.

The Village has used the award money of the Central government’s Pandit Deen Dayal Uapdhyaya Panchayat Sashaktikaran , Chief Minister Panchayat Encouragement award and funds of Gram Nidhi to install RO in the village . These RO has been connected with the water tank which supplies the drinking water to the village.

The village has won 12 lakh each as award money from the two awards.

The village has a population of around 7,000 with 40 percent of it being in the Indian Army. The village has a total of 850 houses of which 350 are owned by Army men who are deployed in different parts of the country but their families stay in Bhartaul.

Kerala Health Minister rejected the Ramon Magsaysay Award as it was against the communists

Former Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja has rejected the Ramon Magsaysay award for her commitment and service towards ensuring an accessible public health system and effectively leading from the front to manage the Nipah and Covid-19 outbreaks in the state. However after she declined it the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation decided not to announce her name in the final list. 

  • Her handling of the health crisis was praised nationally and internationally.
  • KK Shailaja who is a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said that the party decided not to accept the award.
  • She said that cannot accept the award as it was given to an individual while her work as a health minister was a collective work.
  • Also the award which is given in the name of the former Philippines President, was anti-communist and ruthlessly crushed the communist guerrilla movement in the country.
  • If she had accepted the award she would be the fifth Keralite to get the honour after Verghese Kurien, M S Swaminathan, B G Verghese and T N Seshan. 
  • Till date 55 Indians have won the award. First being Vinoba Bhave in 1958 and the last being Ravish Kumar 2019.

Barack Obama : President, Nobel laureate, and now an Emmy winner

The Television Academy on September 3 honoured Hollywood newcomer Barack Obama with an Emmy Award for his narration of his Netflix documentary series "Our Great National Parks".

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Honoured with Capital Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was conferred with the Capital Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice N.V. Ramana at India International Centre, New Delhi, on September 4, 2022

Naveen Patnaik of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party has been the chief minister of Odisha since 5 March 2000 - till date.

The foundation in a statement said that in recognition of his distinctive and outstanding leadership qualities Naveen Patnaik is being conferred Capital Foundation Lifetime Achievement. 

The Capital Foundation Society, established in 1987 is one of the most prestigious voluntary organisations in India which has been engaged in providing a platform for policy dialogue and debate on issues of national and international importance.

DST to set up India’s first-ever Night Sky Sanctuary in Ladakh

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India will set up India’s first-ever Night Sky Sanctuary in Ladakh. It will be completed within the next three months.

This was disclosed by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh after meeting Lt. Governor Ladakh, R.K. Mathur on 3 September 2022 at New Delhi .

Where it is being set up ?

The proposed Dark Sky Reserve will be located at Hanle in Ladakh as a part of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.

 It will boost Astro tourism in India and will be one of the world’s highest-located sites for optical, infrared, and gamma-ray telescopes.

Who will set up ?

The Union Minister informed that a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed recently among the Ladakh Union Territory administration, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru for launching the Dark Space Reserve.

68th edition of Nehru Trophy Boat Race to be held at Punnamada lake in Kerala

In Kerala, the 68th edition of the prestigious Nehru Trophy Boat Race is being held at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha district from September 4.

IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated this latest edition.
  • 20 snake boats (Chundan Vallam) will compete for the coveted trophy.

  • The competitions are organized in nine categories in which around 77 boats including snake boats will participate.

  • 24 Shikara paddlers from Dal Lake in Srinagar are also participating in the boat race this time.

  • Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society (NTBRS), is the organisers of the event.

Winner of Nehru Trophy Boat Race

  • Pallathuruthi Boat Club won the 68th Nehru Trophy Boat Race for the third time in a row.

  • The winning snake boat, named 'Mahadevikad Kattil Thekethil Chandan' crossed the finishing line in 4 minutes and 30 seconds, while the snake boat 'Nadubhagam Chandan' of NCDC Boat Club finished second.

  • With the photo-finish win, the Pallathuruthy Boat Club topped the first round of the second edition of the Champions Boat League (CBL-2), an official Kerala Tourism.

About Nehru Trophy Boat Race

  • The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is organised every year.

  • Snake boats can be seen in this which is one of the most popular and famous tourist attractions of the state.

  • It is part of an old tradition that refers to the rivalry between nations over the monopoly of the spice trade.

  • Called chundam vallam or snake boat, the canoe carries 100 to 150 expert sailors and the boats are up to 38 metres long.

  • Both male and female sailors participate in the Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

  • The sailors who win the competition are awarded a silver trophy.

  • It started with a boat race in 1952 on the banks of the Punnamada Lake near the town of Alappuzha in Kerala to welcome Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.

30th Southern Zonal Council meet

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 30th Southern Zonal Council meeting of South Indian States and Union Territories in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on 3 September.

IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The objective of the meeting was to promote regional cooperation between the states on issues of common national importance.
  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, chief ministers of other southern states - Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana - and the lieutenant governors of the southern union territories of Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands attended the meeting.

  • During the meeting, 26 issues were discussed, nine were resolved, 17 were put up for further consideration, of which nine were related to the reorganisation of Andhra Pradesh.

  • The Union Home Minister called upon the southern states to find an amicable solution to end all issues, especially those related to river water sharing.

  • The Home Minister said that the Ministry of Home Affairs is trying to check the drug menace by emphasising the need for regular NCORD (Narco Coordination Centre) meetings between the states.

  • Since 2015, Rs 4,206 crore has been approved for the Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund scheme in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

About Zonal Councils :

  • In 1956 first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru give the idea of creation of Zonal Councils.

  • There are five Zonal Councils in India which were established in 1957 under Section 15-22 of the States Reorganization Act, 1956.

  • A Standing Committee is constituted by each Zonal Council consisting of the Chief Secretaries of their respective Zonal Councils of the Member States.

  • These Standing Committees meet from time to time to resolve the issues.

  • Chairman - The Union Home Minister is the Chairman of each of these Councils

India set to become third largest economy in the world by 2029: SBI

State Bank of India (SBI) in its latest research report Ecowrap published on 3 September 2022 has projected the Indian economy to become the third largest economy by surpassing Japan in 2029. 

Quoting IMF data, a recent Bloomberg report has said that the Indian economy overtook the United Kingdom economy at the end of December 2021 to become the 5th largest economy in the world.

At present the world’s largest economy is the United States followed by China, Japan and Germany and India.

Main points of the report :

The Indian economy grew by 13.5% in the first quarter of the financial year 2022-23. India is still the fastest growing economy amongst the major economies in the world .

The SBI research paper assumes that the Indian economy will grow at an average growth rate of 6 per cent to 6.5 percent in the foreseeable future .

If it happens then the Indian Gross Domestic Product( GDP) share in the world GDP which is  now at 3.5 per cent, is likely to cross 4 per cent in 2027, the current share of Germany in global GDP.

With this growth rate the Indian economy will become the third largest economy  in the world by 2029. In 2014 India was ranked the 10th largest economy in the world .

It will surpass Germany in 2027 and Japan in 2029.

Under the Major Dhyan Chand Mission, the Higher Education Department of UP has released a fund of one crore 72 lakh rupees

In order to give a boost to the sports in the state the Yogi government  of Uttar Pradesh has now decided to create infrastructure in degree colleges, so that players can be  trained to compete and win medals in the multisport events like Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. 

In the recently concluded 22nd Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 at least 8 sports persons from Uttar Pradesh won the medal or were part of the medal winning team.

Under the Major Dhyan Chand Mission, the Higher Education Department has released a fund of one crore 72 lakh rupees.

The Higher Education Department will provide one lakh rupees each to each government college for the purchase of sports materials.

This fund will be used to buy necessary sports material and the players will not have to wander anywhere for training.
