About the PM Ujjwala Yojana
It is a central government scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.
The aim of the scheme was to provide Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections to five crore women of below poverty line (BPL) households in the first phase.
In the second phase, a target has been set to provide LPG connections to eight crore women by March 2020.
Under this scheme financial assistance of Rs 1600 is provided to BPL families for each LPG connection.
The scheme was expanded in April 2018 to include women beneficiaries from seven more categories (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most backward classes, tea garden, forest dwellers, Islands).
