  • This fruit is most popular in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Indonesia is one of the largest producers of coconuts.

  • Indonesia (1st), India (2nd), Philippines (3rd), Brazil (4th) and Sri Lanka (5th) are the top exporters of coconut.

Background :

  • The coconut tree is often called the "tree of life".

  • It is used in various forms such as food, medicine and cosmetics.

  • The first World Coconut Day was celebrated on 2 September 2009 by the Asia Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) to spread awareness about the importance of coconuts and their impact on society.

  • Since then, UN-ESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the Asia Pacific) has authorised the APCC to celebrate this day on 2 September every year.
