1. PM Modi inaugurates 36th National Games in Ahmedabad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 36th National Games at a glittering ceremony held at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad , Gujarat on 29 September 2022.

Union minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur,Olympians PV Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra and Ravi Kumar Dahiya were also present at the opening ceremony.

The 35th National Games  was held in Kerala in 2015. The National Games will be held in Gujarat for the first time. It will be held from  29 September to 12 October 2022.

3. Shubi Gupta, Charvi wins the U-12 and U-8 section title at the FIDE World Cadets Chess Championship

India’s Shubi Gupta and A Charvi won the girls under-12 and under-8 sections respectively in the FIDE World Cadets Chess Championship .

The FIDE World Cadets Chess Championship  was held in Batumi, Georgia from 16 September to 27 September  2022.

Medal winners of India 

Under -12 Girls events

Shubhi Gupta, of Uttar Pradesh  scored 8.5 points from 11 rounds to claim the gold medal  in the under-12 event.

Under 8 Girls event 

A.Charvi of Karnataka won the gold medal in the U-8 girls event with nine points 

Under -8 boys events 

 Safin Safarullakhan  of Kerala won the bronze medal in the under-8 boy category . The gold medal was won by France’s Marc Llari  and the silver was won by Russian Sav Shogdzhiev Roman.

4. West Zone defeats South Zone in final to win the Cricket’s 2022 Duleep trophy

West Zone won the cricket’s Duleep Trophy title (2021-22 season) after defeating South Zone by 294 runs on the fifth and final day in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu on 25 September 2022.

Set a target of 529 runs for an outright win, South Zone were bowled out for 234 in 71.2 overs.

This is the 20th time the West Zone has won the Duleep Trophy. In addition it has also won the trophy 3 times as joint winner. West Zone has won it maximum times .

This year West Zone, South Zone, East Zone, North Zone, Central Zone and north East Zone teams participated in the Duleep Trophy.

West Zone: 270 & 585/4d

South Zone: 327 & 234

Yashasvi Jaiswal of West Zone was declared as the Player of the final and Jaydev Unadkant of West Zone was declared as the Player of the Series. 

Duleep Trophy 

It is an annual first-class cricket competition organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). 

It was named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar (also known as 'Duleep'), and was started by the BCCI in the 1961-62 season.

The whole country is divided into different zones. However from the 2016-17 to 2019-20 seasons, the Duleep Trophy was contested by 3 teams - India Red, India Blue and India Green.

 West Zone won the inaugural Duleep Trophy in 1962.

5. Rohit Sharma creates a world record of most sixes in international T 20

Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma  created a new world record of maximum sixes in international T20 cricket during his unbeaten knock of 46 against Australia at Nagpur on 23 September 2022.

He hit 4 sixes in his innings, taking his tally to 176 sixes. Martin Guptill of New Zealand is now at the second place with 172 sixes and Chris Gayle of West Indies at the third spot with 126 sixes.

Virat Kohli with 104 sixes in the format is the only other Indian batsmen with more than 100 T20I sixes. 

India won the 2nd T20 against Australia by 5 wickets and the level the 3 match series 1-1. The third match of the series will be played at Hyderabad on 25 September 2022. 

Rohit Sharma currently holds the record of scoring maximum runs in International T 20. He has scored 3677 runs in 138 matches.

6. Fast Bowler Jhulan Gowswami retires from international cricket with a win

Legendary Indian women cricket’s fast bowler Jhulan Gowswami ended her international career on 24 September 2022, as India won the One Day International(ODI) match against England by 16 runs at Lords, London ,England. It was her last International cricket match.

With this win India has won the ODI series against England 3-0.

Jhulan Gowswami started her International career against England in 2002 as a fast bowler. At one time she was the fastest bowler in international women cricket.

The 39-year-old Jhulan has played 12 Tests, 203 ODIs and 68 T20Is for India, and has picked up 353 wickets across formats. Of those, 253 wickets have come in ODIs where she is the highest wicket-taker in women's cricket

She is at present the only women cricketer who has more than 200 wickets in ODI.

The Cricket Association of Bengal has announced that it plans to name a stand of the Eden Garden Stadium, Kolkata in her name. Jhulan Gowswami is from Bengal.

7. Former Indian Hockey captain ‘Dilip Tirkey’ elected new Hockey India President

Former Indian men’s Hockey team captain Dilip Tirkey was elected as the new Hockey India (HI) president unopposed on 23 September 2022.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has also approved Dilip Tirkey and his team's appointments.

The 44 year old Dilip Tirkey of Odisha, represented India at three Olympic Games and was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok and silver at the 2012 edition. He was also part of the team which won gold medals in the 2003 and 2007 editions of the Asia Cup.

Earlier the Delhi High court in a ruling on 26 May 2022 had dismissed the Hockey India President Narinder Batra and appointed a three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) headed by former Supreme Court Judge A.S Dave  to run the day-to-day affairs of Hockey India and conduct the elections in Hockey India .

8. Supreme Court appoints Justice ‘L Nageswara Rao’ to frame the constitution of IOA and oversee its election

The Supreme Court on 22 September 2022, has appointed former Supreme Court judge L Nageswara Rao to prepare a road map for amending the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) constitution and conducting the election of the IOA by December 15, 2022.  

This move of the court comes after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on September 8 issued a final warning to IOA to “resolve its governance issues” and hold elections by December, failing which the world sports body will ban India.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

Background to the Issue : 

  • The IOA President Narendra Batra had to resign after the Delhi High Court ruled on 26 May 2022 that provision of life membership and life president in Hockey India was illegal.
  • Narendra Batra contested and won the election of the IOA in 2017.
  • He contested the election as being the Life Member and Life President in Hockey India.
  • The Supreme Court upheld the Delhi high court order and asked the IOA to frame a new constitution which was in conformity with the National Sports guidelines of the country.
  • However this move of the Court was seen as an interference by the IOC and it warned that it will suspend IOA.

9. Asian Cricket Council announces schedule of eighth edition of Women Asia Cup 2022

Asian Cricket Council’s President Jay Shah announced the schedule of the eighth edition of the Women Asia Cup 2022 on twitter on 21 September 2022.

The Asia cup will be held in Bangladesh from 1 October to 15 October 2022.

A total of seven teams from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and United Arab Emirates.

The semi-finals will be played on October 13 and the title clash on October 15. 

The Women's Asia Cup has been played in the T20 format since 2012. 

The first Asia Women’s cup was held in 2004 in Sri Lanka which was won by India. 

Bangladesh won the last 2018 Asia cup with the 2020 edition being postponed due to covid.

India has won the tournament maximum 6 times.

10. Assamese swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika becomes the first from North East to cross North Channel

Popular Assamese swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika became the first swimmer from Northeast India to cross the North Channel.


IMPORTANT FACTS 

  • Elvis Ali Hazarika has also become the oldest swimmer in India to swim across the North Channel.
  • It took Elvis and his team 14 hours and 38 minutes to achieve the feat.

  • Hazarika, earlier this year, became the first person from North East India to cover the Indo Arabian Gateway Mumbai circle with his relay team.

  • In November 2021, he became the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway Of India, Arabian Sea, the total length of which is around 38 kilometres.

  • In 2019 itself, he became the first person from Assam to cross the Catalina Channel in the United States.

What is the North Channel ?

  • The North Channel is the strait between north-eastern Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland.

  • It begins north of the Isle of Man, where the Irish Sea ends and runs north-west into the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The width of the Northern Channel is 21 km, at its narrowest point located between Tor Head in Northern Ireland and the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland.
