1. India win T-20 series against Sri Lanka 3-0 and equal Afghanistan record

India defeated the Sri Lankan cricket  team to win the T-20 cricket series 3-0 . With the victory, India also equalled Afghanistan’s  record of 12 consecutive wins  in the T-20  international cricket. 

Indian team captain was Rohit Sharma and Sri Lankan team captain was Dasun Shanaka .

First T-20 Match 

  • It was held at the Ekana Cricket Stadium or Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on  24 February 2022.
  • India won by 62 runs .
  • Ishan Kishan of India was the Player  of the match.

Second T-20 match 

  • It was played  at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium, Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh on  26 February 2022..   
  • India defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets.
  • Shreyas Iyer was Player of the match 

Third T-20 match 

  • It was also played at Dharamshala on 27 February 2022.
  • India won the match by 6 wickets .
  • Shreyas Iyer was the Player of the match 

Shreyas Iyer was declared the Player of the series .

2. Kolkata Thunderbolt wins the inaugural Prime Volleyball League

Kolkata Thunderbolts defeated Ahmedabad Defenders in straight sets to win the final of the inaugural Rupay Prime Volleyball League championship in Hyderabad on 27 February 2022.

  • Prime Volleyball League (PVL), also known as Ru pay Prime Volleyball League.
  • It is a professional men indoor volleyball championship organised by Baseline Venture.
  • Total  seven teams participated in the league.

3. Sadia Tariq wins Gold medal at Moscow Wushu Stars Championship

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated  Sadia Tariq on winning a gold medal in the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship, which is being held from February 22 to 28. Sadia won the gold medal in the Wushu Championship in Moscow by defeating a local player.

4. Fallout of Russian Invasion of Ukraine on Sports

After the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian forces on 25 February 2022 there has been a major  fallout on the sports and events to be hosted by Russia .

Football

UEFA (Union of Football Association of Europe) has shifted the UEFA Champions League final from the Russian city of St. Petersburg  to the French city of Paris on 28 May 2022.

The Champions league is an annual tournament conducted by UEFA amongst the top ranked European football clubs.

FIFA and UEFA suspends Russian football teams

  • International Football governing body FIFA and the European football governing body UEFA has banned Russian  national football team and Russian football clubs from participating in any International football event till further notice .
  •  The Russian team is likely to be excluded from the FIFA  men's world cup 2022 to be held in Qatar and the Women's Euro Cup 2022 to be held in England .


Motor Sport 

Formula One or F1 has decided that there will be no F1 race in Russia in 2022.

Russia was to host the Formula one race at Sochi Olympics track on 25 September 2022.

5. Daniil Medvedev is the no 1 tennis player

For the first time since 2004, Daniil Medevedv of Russia became the first  player outside of the 'Big Four' of Rafael Nadal (Spain), Roger Federer (Switzerland), Andy Murray (United Kingdom) and  Novak Djokovic (Serbia) to  be ranked world No. 1 in men's tennis.

  • He became number 1 player  after Djokovic's surprise defeat to world No. 123 Jiri Vesely in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

  • Djokovic of Serbia  holds the all-time record for weeks spent at No. 1 with 361, and Switzerland’s Roger Federer is the second with a record 310 week as the world no 1.

6. Service and Kerala win 34th Federation Cup volleyball championships

The 34th Federation Cup volleyball championships was held at the KIIT indoor stadium, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. 

Men’ winner 

Service team defeated Railway to win the title 

Odisha team came third after defeating National Champion Haryana 

Women winner 

National champion Kerala won the women's title after defeating Railways 3-0 in the round-robin decider. Railways finished runner-up.

7. R. Praggnanandhaa shocks World Champion Magnus Carlssen

16 years old chess prodigy from Chennai, India R. Praggnanandhaa defeated World Chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway  in the Airthings Masters online rapid chess tournament,

Earlier he defeated world no 4 player Levon Aronian of Armenia.

The Airthings Masters is a 16-player online rapid tournament.

8. Mumbai to host IOC session in 2023

Mumbai was selected as the host of the 2023 International Olympics (IOC) session.

It was selected at the 139th IOC session held at Beijing, China where the 24th winter olympics came to an end on 20 February 2022.  

  • A total of 82 IOC members were eligible for voting, out of which 6 voted for abstention, while 75 members voted yes. Only one vote went against Mumbai as the host of the next IOC Session.

  • This is the second time India will host the IOC session after the 86th session was held in 1983 at New Delhi.

  • The Mumbai session is expected to announce the host of the 2030 winter olympics.

9. Beijing winter olympics 2022 comes to an end

The 24th winter olympics came to an end on 20 February 2022 at a colourful ceremony in the “Bird Nest” stadium Beijing, China.The Chinese President Xi Jingping was the chief guest at the occasion along with the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.

  • Thomas Bach officially declared the games as over and symbolically handed the games to the next winter olympics host Milano-Cortina.

  • The Italian city of Milano-Cortina will host the event in 2026.

  • From India there was only one competitor, Arif Khan from the Baramulla district of  Jammu and Kashmir.  He is the first ever Indian to qualify for winter olympics.

  • He participated in two events. In the giant slalom event he finished 45th while he was unable to complete the men’s slalom event.

Fact File Winter Olympics 

  • The winter olympics is organised by the International Olympic Committee every four years on snow or ice.

  • The first winter olympics was held in Chamonix (France), in 1924. Initially called the “International Winter Sports Week”, this event was renamed the “1st Olympic Winter Games” only in 1926 at the IOC Session in Lisbon(Portugal).

  • The decision to create a separate Winter Games cycle was taken at the 1925 IOC Session in Prague(Czech Republic).

  • It was not held in 1940 and 1944  due to the second world war and resumed in 1948 at St. Moritz, Switzerland. 

  • Until 1992 the winter and the summer olympics were held in the same year but a decision was taken to separate the events. The next winter olympics took place in 1994 and since then it has been held in even years, that is 1998. It is usually held in the month of February.

  • The winter olympics has been held in three continents: North America, Europe and Asia.

  • The United States has hosted the event a maximum 4 times (1932,1960,1980, 2002) followed by France in (1924, 1968, 1992).

  • As of 2022, twelve countries have participated in every Winter Olympic Games – Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Britain, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. 

  • Norway has till date (2022) won the maximum medal in the Winter Olympics . It has won a total of 405 medals.

10. Argentina and Brazil to replay their World Cup qualifier football match

FIFA has ordered Argentina and Brazil to replay their world cup qualifier match after the match in september 2021 was suspended just minutes after kickoff due to breach in covid protocol. 

The match at NeoQuimica Arena in Sao Paulo was halted after five minutes when Brazilian health officials invaded the pitch to stop Argentina's England-based players from playing, saying they had breached the country's COVID-19 quarantine rules.
