• Jaxay Shah, former Chairman of CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India) and founder Chairman of Savvy Group has been appointed as the Chairman of Quality Council of India (QCI) for a period of three years effective from 21st October 2022. 
• Jaxay Shah has been appointed in place of Adil Zainulbhai. Zainulbhai was appointed as the chairman of QCI in 2014.
• Zainulbhai served as the QCI chief through three terms for a period of eight years from 2014 to 2022.
• Shah was earlier the national chairman of CREDAI, an association of private real estate companies in the country.
• Apart from this, he has also been the chairman of the Western Region Development Council of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM).

Quality Council of India (QCI): 

• QCI was set up as an autonomous body in 1997 by the government of India with Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
• QCI has been set up to create a mechanism for independent third party evaluation of products, services and processes.
• QCI is mandated to promote quality in the country through national accreditation of testing, inspection and certification bodies which is internationally recognised, driving third-party assessments across sectors.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is visiting Uttarakhand attended the 'Saras Mela' in Mana village of Chamoli district, on 21 October 2022. 
• Mana Village on the banks of river Saraswati is also known as the last Indian village along the India-Tibetan border in Uttarakhand is just 3 kms from Badrinath town. 
• The Saras Mela is normally organized by the Union Ministry of Rural Development all over India with a focus on a particular state.
• In the mela products made by the women Self Help Groups (SHG) are displayed and cultural activities are also held.
• However this Saras Mela was organized at the local level with the participation of the local women SHGs.
• Here laid the foundation stone for road widening projects worth around Rs 1,000 crore.
• The two road widening projects - from Mana to Mana Pass (NH07) and from Joshimath to Malari (NH107B), will not only provide last-mile all-weather road connectivity to the border areas but are also of strategic significance for the defense forces. 
• The Prime Minister also visited Badrinath Temple accompanied by the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami and the Governor of Uttarakhand, Retd. Gen Gurmit Singh. 

Kedarnath:  

• Before visiting the Badrinath temple PM Modi visited the Kedarnath temple in Rudraprayag which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.  

Ropeway Projects:  

• The Prime Minister laid the foundation of two ropeway projects in the state to be built at the cost of Rs. 2430 crore.
• In Kedarnath, he laid the foundation stone of the Kedarnath Ropeway Project. The ropeway in Kedarnath will be around 9.7 Km long and will connect Gaurikund to Kedarnath. 
• The Hemkund ropeway project in Chamoli district will connect Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib.
• It will be around 12.4 Km long and will reduce the travel time from more than a day to only about 45 minutes.
• This ropeway will also connect Ghangaria, which is the gateway to Valley of Flowers National Park in Chamoli.

Uttarakhand:  

• Uttarakhand was formed on 9th November 2000 as the 27th State of India. It was formed by carving out the hilly areas of Uttar Pradesh.
• It shares international boundaries with China (Tibet) in the north and Nepal in the east. On its north-west lies Himachal Pradesh, while on the south is Uttar Pradesh.
• The state is also famous as God’s Land or Dev Bhoomi.

प्रधान मंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने 21 अक्टूबर, 2022 को उत्तराखंड के चमोली जिले के माणा गांव में आयोजित 'सरस मेले' में शामिल हुए। सरस्वती नदी के तट पर स्थित माणा गाँव को उत्तराखंड में भारत-तिब्बत सीमा के साथ अंतिम भारतीय गाँव के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, जो बद्रीनाथ शहर से सिर्फ 3 किलोमीटर दूर है।

• सरस मेला आम तौर पर केंद्रीय ग्रामीण विकास मंत्रालय द्वारा पूरे भारत में एक विशेष राज्य को केन्द्रित कर आयोजित किया जाता है।
• मेले में महिला स्वयं सहायता समूहों (एसएचजी) द्वारा बनाए गए उत्पादों को प्रदर्शित किया जाता है और सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियां भी आयोजित की जाती हैं।

• उत्तराखंड का गठन 9 नवंबर 2000 को भारत के 27वें राज्य के रूप में हुआ था। इसका निर्माण उत्तर प्रदेश के पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों को अलग कर किया गया था।

• The capital market regulator Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has approved the central government’s proposal to convert around $1.92 billion telecom dues of Vodafone Idea to equity shares.
• In September 2021 the government of India announced a relief package for the telecom sector so that they can pay back the due they owe to the government of India after a Supreme Court judgement of  2019. 
• Under the package the telecom companies, Reliance Industries' Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea were given an option to convert their dues into equity shares and issue it to the Government of India.
• Jio and Airtel opted to pay back the dues to the government but Vodafone opted to convert its dues into equity shares.
• The package was primarily for Vodafone Idea which was on the verge of bankruptcy and the government did not want the telecom sector to be dominated by two companies.
• Under the deal the government stake in Vodafone Idea will be around 35.8% of the total outstanding shares of the Vodafone-Idea  Company, while the promoters Vodafone and Aditya Birla Group would hold around 28.5% and around 17.8% stake in the company, respectively.
• The government intends to sell the share of the company when Vodafone Idea becomes profitable.

Vodafone Idea:  

• It is a joint venture of Vodafone (United Kingdom) and Aditya Birla Group.

पूंजी बाजार नियामक भारतीय प्रतिभूति विनिमय बोर्ड (सेबी) ने वोडाफोन आइडिया के लगभग 1.92 बिलियन डॉलर के दूरसंचार बकाया को इक्विटी शेयरों में बदलने के केंद्र सरकार के प्रस्ताव को मंजूरी दे दी है।

• सितंबर 2021 में भारत सरकार ने दूरसंचार क्षेत्र के लिए एक राहत पैकेज की घोषणा की ताकि वे 2019 के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय के फैसले के बाद भारत सरकार को बकाया राशि का भुगतान कर सकें।
• पैकेज के तहत टेलीकॉम कंपनियों, रिलायंस इंडस्ट्रीज की जियो, भारती एयरटेल और वोडाफोन आइडिया को अपने बकाया राशी को इक्विटी शेयरों में बदलने और भारत सरकार को जारी करने का विकल्प दिया गया था। जियो और एयरटेल ने सरकार को बकाया चुकाने का विकल्प चुना लेकिन वोडाफोन ने अपनी बकाया राशि को इक्विटी शेयरों में बदलने का विकल्प चुना।
• पैकेज मुख्य रूप से वोडाफोन आइडिया के लिए था जो दिवालिया होने की कगार पर था और सरकार नहीं चाहती थी कि दूरसंचार क्षेत्र में दो कंपनियों का वर्चस्व हो।
• सौदे के तहत वोडाफोन आइडिया में सरकार की हिस्सेदारी वोडाफोन-आइडिया कंपनी के कुल शेयरों का लगभग 35.8% होगी, जबकि प्रमोटर वोडाफोन और आदित्य बिड़ला समूह के पास कंपनी में क्रमशः लगभग 28.5% और लगभग 17.8% हिस्सेदारी होगी।

• The Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed a Rs 1,337.76 crore fine on Google, owned by Alphabet companyfor abusing its dominant position in the Android mobile device market.
• The antitrust regulator also barred Google from conducting unfair business practices, including offering incentives to smartphone makers for exclusively carrying its search services.

Background to the case:  

• In May 2019 there was a complaint against Google that it used its dominant position as the supplier of the Android operating system to stifle competition and give it undue advantage.
• Around 96% of the smartphones in India are run on Android OS as of September, while 4.09% run on Apple’s iOS.
• Google signed an agreement with the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of smartphones and tablets called Mobile Application Distribution Agreement (MADA).
• Under this agreement the OEM has to pre-install entire Google Mobile Suite like its search engine, YouTube etc. and place it prominently on their device. 
• This gave Google an unfair advantage to Google as compared to its competitor.
• The CCI found Google guilty of abusing its dominant position to illegally hurt competitors in India.
• The Indian case is similar to one faced by Google in Europe, where regulators imposed a $5 billion fine on the company for forcing manufacturers to pre-install its apps on Android devices.

भारतीय प्रतिस्पर्धा आयोग (सीसीआई) ने 20 अक्टूबर 2022 को अपने एक आदेश में एंड्रॉइड मोबाइल डिवाइस बाजार में अपनी प्रमुख स्थिति का दुरुपयोग करने के लिए अल्फाबेट कंपनी के स्वामित्व वाली गूगल कंपनी पर 1,337.76 करोड़ रुपये का जुर्माना लगाया है।

• सीसीआई ने गूगल को अनुचित व्यावसायिक व्यवहार करने पर भी रोक लगा दिया, जिसमें स्मार्टफोन निर्माताओं को विशेष रूप से अपनी सर्च इंजन क्रोम का इस्तेमाल करने के लिए प्रोत्साहन की पेशकश भी शामिल है।

• इसी तरह के मामले में गूगल पर यूरोप में नियामकों ने उस पर $ 5 बिलियन का जुर्माना लगाया है, जहाँ गूगल को मूल उपकरण निर्माताओं पर अपने ऐप्स को प्री-इंस्टॉल करने के लिए मजबूर करने का दोषी पाया।

• The World Bank has said that it will launch a new system for assessing the business and investment climate in economies worldwide following the discontinuation of the Ease of Doing Business report.
• The report titled “Business Enabling Environment” (BEE) is expected to be launched in April 2024.
• The Ease of Doing Business report which was first published by the World Bank in 2003 titled “Doing Business” report.
• The report ranked the country on their business friendly environmentby about 12 indicators.
• The report which was annually published by the World Bank was discontinued in September 2021 after a data rigging scandal came to light.
• An internal audit of the World Bank revealed data irregularities in reports on China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan in the 2018 and 2020 editions.
• Subsequently, the Bank decided to come out with a new system that would be far more robust and credible than the earlier one. Hence it will come out with “Business Enabling Environment’.

पोलियो क्या है?

• पोलियो एक संभावित घातक वायरल संक्रामक रोग है जो तंत्रिका तंत्र को प्रभावित करता है।
• पोलियो वायरस के तीन प्रकार हैं-

1. वाइल्ड पोलियो वायरस 1 (WPV1)
2. वाइल्ड पोलियो वायरस 2 (WPV2)
3. वाइल्ड पोलियो वायरस 3 (WPV3)

• लक्षण के आधार पर ये सभी तीन प्रकार समान होते हैं और पक्षाघात तथा मृत्यु का कारण बन सकते हैं।
• यह वायरस मुख्य रूप से ‘मलाशय-मुख मार्ग’ के माध्यम से या दूषित पानी या भोजन के माध्यम से एक व्यक्ति से दूसरे व्यक्ति में फैलता है।

• Bilateral annual trade between India and China crossed $100 billion for the first time in 2021 to reach $125.6 billion, of which India's imports were $97.5 billion.

• Trade ties between both countries began to boom in the early 2000s.
• This was largely driven by the import of Chinese machinery and other equipment by India.
• It increased from $3 billion in 2000 to $42 billion in 2008 and China became India's largest trading partner in 2008.
• One-third of the machinery and about two-fifths of organic chemicals that India buys from the world,  come from China.
• Automotive parts and fertilisers are other items where China accounts for more than 25 per cent of India's imports.
• India procures nearly 90 percent of the parts for some mobile phones from China.

• China is also a major partner of India in terms of export market.
• China is the third largest destination for Indian shipments.

• यह काफी हद तक भारत द्वारा चीनी मशीनरी और अन्य उपकरणों के आयात से प्रेरित था।
• यह वर्ष 2000 में 3 बिलियन डॉलर से बढ़कर 2008 में 42 बिलियन डॉलर हो गया और वर्ष 2008 में चीन भारत का सबसे बड़ा व्यापारिक भागीदार बन गया।
• एक तिहाई मशीनरी और लगभग टू-फिफ्थ जैविक रसायन जो भारत दुनिया से खरीदता है वह चीन से आता है।
• ऑटोमोटिव पार्ट्स और उर्वरक अन्य वस्तुएं हैं जहां भारत के आयात में चीन की हिस्सेदारी 25 प्रतिशत से अधिक है।

Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day (IDD) or World Iodine Deficiency Day is observed every year on 21 October.

• The theme of World Iodine Deficiency Day, 2022 is ‘Thyroid and Communication’.
• The idea of the theme is to spread awareness of iodine and its importance. 
• On this occasion, many activities are organised to create awareness among the general public regarding the prevention of iodine deficiency disorders.
• On this occasion, World Iodine Deficiency Control Week will be celebrated from 21-27 October by the Health Department across the country.

• Iodine is a mineral used by the body to regulate metabolism.
• It is an element that is needed for the production of thyroid hormone.
• The body does not make iodine, so it is an essential part of our diet.
• It also helps control bone growth and brain development in children.
• It is found in seafood, iodized salt, dairy products and some fruits and vegetables.
• Globally, 2 billion people are at risk of iodine deficiency diseases.
• In 1992, iodized salt was made mandatory for human consumption in India.
