The Center has approved Karnataka's Kalasa-Banduri drinking water project, which is facing opposition from Goa and Maharashtra.

Government has increased interest rates on various small savings schemes for the fourth quarter of the current Financial Year starting from 1st January 2023.

• The interest rate on small savings deposits of one year duration has been increased from 5.5 per cent to 6.6 per cent.
• The rates for thepost office1 year, 2 year, 3 year, and 5 year time deposits have been hiked to 6.6%, 6.8%, 6.9%, and 7%, from 5.5%, 5.7%, 5.8%, and 6.7% respectively.
• Interest rates on these small savings schemes have been increased by up to 110 basis points for the January-March 2023 quarter.
• The Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance has notified the change in rates in view of the rising interest rate environment.

सिक्किम के नेपाली गुरुंग समुदाय ने 30 दिसंबर 2022 को अपना नववर्ष तमू ल्होसर त्योहार हर्ष और उल्लास के साथ मनाया। 

महत्वपूर्ण बिंदु-

• तमू ल्होसर गुरुंग नव वर्ष की शुरुआत का प्रतीक है यह अंग्रेजी कैलेंडर में 30 दिसंबर और विक्रम संवत के पूस महीने के 15वें दिन पड़ता है। यह त्योहार पूरे परिवार और समुदाय के साथ मनाया जाता है।
• नेपाल में गुरुंग बाहुल्य जिलों में तमु ल्होसर सांस्कृतिक झांकी के साथ भव्य रूप से मनाया जाता है।
• गुरुंग मध्य नेपाल में हिमालय पर्वत के दक्षिणी ढलानों पर रहने वाले एक पहाड़ी लोग हैं। 
• सिक्किम में गुरुंग समुदाय की एक बड़ी आबादी है।

Koneru Humpy won the silver medal in the women's section of the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship. Hence option 1 is wrong.

In the rapid category, the men's title was won by Magnus Carlsen of Norway. Hence, option 2 is wrong.

The World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2022 was organised in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

At the end of the year, FIDE organizes the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships.

Important Points:

• Former Indian World Rapid Chess champion Koneru Humpy won the silver medal in the women's section of the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship.
  
• She finished just half a point behind winner Bibisara Balabayeva of Kazakhstan.
• Magnus Carlsen of Norway won the men's title in the rapid category.  It was the 4th time that Carlsen has won the Rapid title and women's title was won by  the Chinese Grand Master Tan Zhongyi.  
• India's Savita Shree won the bronze medal in the world rapid category.

The interest rates on small savings scheme are revised after every quarter.

• Small Savings Schemes are deposit schemes of the Government of India where people are assured of complete safety and withdrawal of their deposits.
• The government uses these funds for development purposes. These schemes are operated through post offices in India.
• Unlike banks where the interest rates are decided by the banks, the interest rates in the small savings scheme are decided by the Government of India.

India's  first underwater metro service, the East-West Metro Corridor project is expected to be completed by December 2023, according to the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation.

Important Points - 

• Out of the total length of 16.55 km of the project, 9.30 km between Sector V and Sealdah is operational.
• The twin tunnels under the Hooghly river will be about half a kilometer which will be covered by the metro train in less than a minute.

G. Kamala Vardhana Rao was appointed the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on 29 December 2022.

• G. Kamala Vardhana Rao is a 1990 batch IAS officer from Kerala cadre. He was previously the managing director of the Indian Tourism Development Corporation.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)-

• Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been set up under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
• It was set up on 5 September 2008.
• It comes under the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

The Maharashtra government has appointed Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran as the head of the new Economic Advisory Council of Maharashtra.

Important Points:

• To make Maharashtra a trillion dollar economy, Government has established the Economic Advisory Council.  
• Central Government has set a target of India becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25. 
• The Economic Advisory Council will function as a private research organisation with focus on issues related to agriculture, banking, engineering and education.
• The State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP) of Maharashtra in 2021-22 was $430.62 billion.

• आर्थिक सलाहकार परिषद कृषि, बैंकिंग, इंजीनियरिंग और शिक्षा से संबंधित मुद्दों पर ध्यान देने के साथ एक निजी शोध संगठन के रूप में कार्य करेगी।
• 2021-22 में महाराष्ट्र का राज्य सकल घरेलू उत्पाद (SGDP) $430.62 बिलियन था।
