The European Union has complained to the World Trade Organization against China for its trade dispute with an EU member state. This country is Lithuania.

• The European Union has  filed a case against China  at the World Trade Organization(WTO) for targeting Lithuania over its stance on Taiwan.
• The move has angered  China , which does not recognise Taiwan as a state and considers the self-ruled democratic island a rebellious territory of the mainland. 
• This European Union move comes after Lithuania complained that China is blocking its imports and putting up a number of restrictions on economic ties between the two countries.

Background to the issue  

• In July 2021 ,Lithuania allowed  Taiwan to open a diplomatic mission in its capital Vilnius in Taiwan's name instead of Chinese Taipei which many countries do to avoid angering China  .
•  It enraged China, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province of China and opposes any country which seeks to establish relations with Taiwan .
• In November 2021, China retaliated and  downgraded its diplomatic ties with Lithuania and stopped issuing visas there in protest at Vilnius' decision to allow Taiwan to open the representative office under its own name.
• The European Commission handles trade policy for the EU’s 27 member states and takes the lead on conflicts at the WTO in Geneva, even if they involve a single state.
• According to the WTO rules,both sides have 60 days to resolve the issue through talks and if they fail to resolve the issue then it will be taken up by the  dispute panel of the WTO.

• यूरोपीय संघ ने ताइवान पर अपने रुख को लेकर लिथुआनिया को निशाना बनाने के लिए विश्व व्यापार संगठन (डब्ल्यूटीओ) में चीन के खिलाफ मामला दर्ज किया है।
• इस कदम ने चीन को नाराज कर दिया है, जो ताइवान को एक देश के रूप में मान्यता नहीं देता है और  स्व-शासित लोकतांत्रिक द्वीप को मुख्य भूमि का विद्रोही क्षेत्र मानता है।
• यूरोपीय संघ का यह कदम लिथुआनिया की शिकायत के बाद आया है कि चीन उसके आयात को रोक रहा है और दोनों देशों के बीच आर्थिक संबंधों पर कई प्रतिबंध लगा रहा है।

मुद्दे की पृष्ठभूमि

• जुलाई 2021 में, लिथुआनिया ने ताइवान को चीनी ताइपे के बजाय ताइवान के नाम पर अपनी राजधानी  विलनियस में एक राजनयिक मिशन खोलने की अनुमति दी, अक्सर देश जो  चीन को नाराज  नहीं करना चाह्ते है ताइवान को चीनी ताइपे के नाम से अपना ऑफिस खोलने की मंजूरी देते हैं ।
• लिथुआनिया के इस कदम से चीन नाराज़ हों गया क्योकि चीन ताइवान को चीन  का एक  प्रांत मानता है और वह हर उस  देश का विरोध करता है जो ताइवान के साथ संबंध स्थापित करना चाहता है।
• नवंबर 2021 में, चीन ने जवाबी कार्रवाई की और लिथुआनिया के साथ अपने राजनयिक संबंधों को डाउनग्रेड कर दिया और विलनियस के ताइवान को अपने नाम के तहत प्रतिनिधि कार्यालय खोलने की अनुमति देने के फैसले के विरोध में वहां वीजा जारी करना बंद कर दिया।

• Lieutenant Shivangi Singh, the country's first woman fighter aircraft pilot, became a part of the Indian Air Force's tableau at the 73rd Republic Day 2022 parade.

•  President Ram Nath Kovind led the nation in celebrating the 73 Republic day 2022  celebration  at the Rajpath in New Delhi .
• This year republic day celebrations are part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebration of the Government of India to commemorate 75 years of Indian Independence .

Highlights of the Republic day ceremony 2022

• There were no foreign guests at the ceremony like in 2021 due to the corona pandemic .
•  From this year the Republic day celebration started on 23 and will end on 30 January . Earlier it started on 24 and ended on 29 January. 23 January is celebrated as Parakram Day on the birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose and 30 January is the Martyr's day to mark the assassination of Gandhiji. 
• This year  construction workers, sanitation workers, frontline workers and auto rickshaw drivers were invited as a special guest .
• Eco-friendly invitation cards with seeds of medicinal plants such as Aloe Vera, Ashwagandha and Amla have also been sent to invitees
•  For the first time 480 dancers performed on the Rajpath who have been selected through a nationwide Vande Bharatham  dance competition. 
• The parade saw the launch of 'Shaheedon Ko Shat Shat Naman' programme by National Cadet and a display of ten scrolls each of 75 metres prepared during the 'Kala Kumbh' event.
• Due to Covid restriction only 21 tableaux  were allowed at the parade. 12 tableaux were of State and Union Territories and nine of the Ministries and Department . The tableaux of Meghalaya, Gujarat, Goa, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra participated in the parade. 
• The finale of the Republic day parade was the spectacular 75 aircraft fly past by the Indian Air Force.  It included Rafale,Sukhoi-30s ,Jaguars etc  fighter jets and helicopters of the Indian Air Force .  17 Jaguar fighter jets formed 75 formations  to commemorate the 75th Independence day of India .
• The military horse Virat retired after the parade. It was the 13 and final appearance of the Virat on the Rajpath as the commandant of the President  Bodyguard cavalry.  The President, Prime Minister and Defence Minister personally patted the horse as a mark of respect.
• The beating retreat ceremony will be held on 29 January which will feature 1000 drones developed by IIT Delhi startup “ Botlab Dynamics”, and supported by the Department of Science and Technology. India will become the fourth country in the world after China, US and Russia to conduct a drone show on such a scale .
• The parade was  commanded by Parade Commander, Lieutenant General Vijay Kumar Mishra.

• इस वर्ष गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह भारतीय स्वतंत्रता के 75 वर्षों के उपलक्ष्य में भारत सरकार के "आजादी का अमृत महोत्सव" उत्सव का हिस्सा है।

गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह 2022 की मुख्य बातें

• कोरोना महामारी के कारण 2021 की तरह समारोह में कोई विदेशी मेहमान नहीं था|
• इस वर्ष से गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह 23 को शुरू हुआ और 30 जनवरी को समाप्त होगा। इससे पहले यह 24 को शुरू हुआ था और 29 जनवरी को समाप्त हुआ था। 23 जनवरी को सुभाष चंद्र बोस की जयंती पर पराक्रम दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है और 30 जनवरी को गांधी जी के हत्या के अवसर पर शहीद दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। 
• इस साल निर्माण श्रमिकों, सफाई कर्मचारियों, फ्रंटलाइन वर्कर्स और ऑटो रिक्शा चालकों को एक विशेष अतिथि के रूप में आमंत्रित किया गया था।
• एलोवेरा, अश्वगंधा और आंवला जैसे औषधीय पौधों के बीजों के साथ पर्यावरण के अनुकूल निमंत्रण कार्ड भी आमंत्रितों को भेजे गए हैं|

• सैन्य घोड़ा 'विराट' परेड के बाद रिटायर हो गया। यह राष्ट्रपति बॉडीगार्ड घुड़सवार सेना के कमांडेंट के रूप में राजपथ पर विराट की 13 और अंतिम उपस्थिति थी। राष्ट्रपति, प्रधानमंत्री और रक्षा मंत्री ने सम्मान के रूप में व्यक्तिगत रूप से घोड़े को थपथपाया।
• बीटिंग रिट्रीट समारोह 29 जनवरी को आयोजित किया जाएगा जिसमें आईआईटी दिल्ली स्टार्टअप "बॉटलैब डायनेमिक्स" द्वारा विकसित और विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी विभाग द्वारा समर्थित 1000 ड्रोन होंगे। चीन, अमेरिका और रूस के बाद भारत दुनिया का चौथा देश बन जाएगा जिसने इस तरह के पैमाने पर ड्रोन शो आयोजित किया है।

Under the agreement between India and Central Asia announced during the first summit held on 28 January 2022, the leaders of all countries agreed to hold such summitsevery two years.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the first India Central Asian summit meeting in a virtual mode to commemorate the establishment of 30 years of diplomatic relationship on 27 January 2022.
• The meeting saw the participation of the five Presidents of the  Central Asian Republics namely;  Kazakhstan’s Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Uzbekistan’s Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan’s Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan. 

 Speaking on the occasion Prime Minister Modi outlined three main objectives of the summit ;

• First, the cooperation between India and Central Asia is vital for the security and prosperity of the region. 
• Secondly , to set up an effective structure of cooperation between the two for regular interactions at various levels 
• Thirdly, to create an ambitious roadmap for cooperation between India and Central Asia .

Important highlights of the meeting 

• They also agreed on regular meetings of Foreign Ministers, Trade Ministers, Culture Ministers and Secretaries of the Security Council to prepare the groundwork for the Summit meetings.
• An India-Central Asia Secretariat in New Delhi would be set up to support the new mechanism.

 To further cooperation between the two they agreed to :

•  set up  a  Joint Working Groups at senior official level on Afghanistan and use of Chabahar Port of Iran
• To organise Buddhist exhibitions in Central Asian countries
•  To commission  an India-Central Asia dictionary of common words;
•  To hold joint  counter-terrorism exercises; 
• To organise the visit of a 100 member youth delegation annually from Central Asian countries to India.

 The Central Asian Presidents were to be the chief guest at the 73 Republic day celebration 2022 but due to covid pandmeic their visit was cancelled.

28 जनवरी 2022 को आयोजित पहली शिखर बैठक के दौरान घोषित भारत और मध्य एशिया के बीच हुए समझौते के तहत , सभी देशों के नेताओं नेहर दो साल में इस तरह की शिखर बैठक आयोजित करने पर सहमति व्यक्त की।

• प्रधान मंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने 27 जनवरी 2022 को 30 साल के राजनयिक संबंधों की स्थापना के उपलक्ष्य में वर्चुअल मोड में पहली भारत मध्य एशियाई शिखर बैठक की मेजबानी की।
• बैठक में मध्य एशियाई गणराज्यों के पांच राष्ट्रपतियों की भागीदारी देखी गई; कजाकिस्तान के कसीम-जोमार्ट टोकायव, उज्बेकिस्तान के शवकत मिर्जियोयेव, ताजिकिस्तान के इमोमाली रहमोन, तुर्कमेनिस्तान के गुरबांगुली बर्दीमुहामेदो और किर्गिस्तान के सदिर जापरोव।

इस अवसर पर बोलते हुए प्रधान मंत्री मोदी ने शिखर सम्मेलन के तीन मुख्य उद्देश्यों को रेखांकित किया;

• पहला, भारत और मध्य एशिया के बीच सहयोग क्षेत्र की सुरक्षा और समृद्धि के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है।
• दूसरा,विभिन्न स्तरों पर नियमित बातचीत के लिए दोनों के बीच सहयोग का एक प्रभावी ढांचा तैयार करना
• तीसरा, भारत और मध्य एशिया के बीच सहयोग के लिए एक महत्वाकांक्षी रोडमैप तैयार करना।

बैठक के महत्वपूर्ण अंश

• वे शिखर सम्मेलन की बैठकों के लिए आधार तैयार करने के लिए विदेश मंत्रियों, व्यापार मंत्रियों, संस्कृति मंत्रियों और सुरक्षा परिषद के सचिवों की नियमित बैठकों पर भी सहमत हुए।
• नए तंत्र का समर्थन करने के लिए नई दिल्ली में एक भारत-मध्य एशिया सचिवालय स्थापित किया जाएगा।

दोनों के बीच आगे सहयोग के लिए वे सहमत हुए:

• अफगानिस्तान और ईरान के चाबहार बंदरगाह के उपयोग पर वरिष्ठ आधिकारिक स्तर पर एक संयुक्त कार्य समूह की स्थापना करना
• मध्य एशियाई देशों में बौद्ध प्रदर्शनियों का आयोजन करना
•  सामान्य शब्दों का भारत-मध्य एशिया शब्दकोश चालू करना;
•  संयुक्त आतंकवाद विरोधी अभ्यास आयोजित करना;
• मध्य एशियाई देशों से प्रतिवर्ष 100 सदस्यीय युवा प्रतिनिधिमंडल के भारत दौरे का आयोजन करना।

• बैठक में मध्य एशियाई गणराज्यों के पांच राष्ट्रपतियों की भागीदारी देखी गई; कजाकिस्तान के कसीम-जोमार्ट टोकायव, उज्बेकिस्तान के शवकत मिर्जियोयेव, ताजिकिस्तान के इमोमाली रहमोन, तुर्कमेनिस्तान के गुरबांगुली बर्दीमुहामेदो और किर्गिस्तान के सदिर जापरोव।

इस अवसर पर बोलते हुए प्रधान मंत्री मोदी ने शिखर सम्मेलन के तीन मुख्य उद्देश्यों को रेखांकित किया;

• पहला, भारत और मध्य एशिया के बीच सहयोग क्षेत्र की सुरक्षा और समृद्धि के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है।
• दूसरा,विभिन्न स्तरों पर नियमित बातचीत के लिए दोनों के बीच सहयोग का एक प्रभावी ढांचा तैयार करना
• तीसरा, भारत और मध्य एशिया के बीच सहयोग के लिए एक महत्वाकांक्षी रोडमैप तैयार करना।

बैठक के महत्वपूर्ण अंश

• नेताओं ने हर दो साल में इस तरह की शिखर बैठक आयोजित करने पर सहमति व्यक्त की।
• वे शिखर सम्मेलन की बैठकों के लिए आधार तैयार करने के लिए विदेश मंत्रियों, व्यापार मंत्रियों, संस्कृति मंत्रियों और सुरक्षा परिषद के सचिवों की नियमित बैठकों पर भी सहमत हुए।
• नए तंत्र का समर्थन करने के लिए नई दिल्ली में एक भारत-मध्य एशिया सचिवालय स्थापित किया जाएगा।

आगे सहयोग के लिए दोनों के बीच समझौते

• अफगानिस्तान और ईरान के चाबहार बंदरगाह के उपयोग पर वरिष्ठ आधिकारिक स्तर पर एक संयुक्त कार्य समूह की स्थापना करना
• मध्य एशियाई देशों में बौद्ध प्रदर्शनियों का आयोजन करना
• सामान्य शब्दों का भारत-मध्य एशिया शब्दकोश चालू करना;
• संयुक्त आतंकवाद विरोधी अभ्यास आयोजित करना;
• मध्य एशियाई देशों से प्रतिवर्ष 100 सदस्यीय युवा प्रतिनिधिमंडल के भारत दौरे का आयोजन करना।
• 73वें गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह 2022 में मध्य एशियाई राष्ट्रपतियों को मुख्य अतिथि होना था, लेकिन कोविड महामारी के कारण उनका दौरा रद्द कर दिया गया।

• Indian movie Koozhangal(Pebbles in English) won the best film award in the Asian Film category  at the recently concluded 20th Dhaka International Film Festival in Bangladesh.
• The Koozhangal (or Pebble in English)  is a Tamil movie directed by Vinothraj PS . This movie was also India's  official entry in the international feature film category at the 2022 Academy Awards(oscar).

The exercise was conducted in the Arabian sea by the Western Naval  Command 

Joint Maritime Exercise Paschim Lehar (XPL-2022) was conducted on 25 January 2022 under the aegis of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Navy, Western Naval Command.

• The objective of this exercise was to validate operational plans of the Western Naval Command and enhance Inter-Service synergy among the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Army and Coast Guard.
• The IAF deployed SU 30 MKI & Jaguar maritime strike aircraft, Flight Refuelling Aircraft and AWACs, alongside the Indian Navy’s maritime reconnaissance aircraft P8i, Dorniers, IL 38 SD, unmanned aerial systems and MiG 29K strike aircraft.
• After a long gap, many Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) and Air Cushion Vessels of the Coast Guard also participated in exercise Paschim Lehar.

INS Khukri Memorial in India is located in Diu.

• The decommissioned Indian Naval Ship Khukri  has been handed over to the Diu administration to convert it into a museum .  The ship was built by Mazagon Dock, Mumbai  and was commissioned in the Navy in 1983. 
• It was decommissioned in 2019. The ship was named after the INS Khukri which was hit by a Pakistani torpedo and sank near Diu coast in the 1971 war . 
•  The  present ship will be added to the INS Khukri memorial  set up in Diu in 1999 to honour the INS Khukri of 1971.

• The index, which ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people, uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.
•  The least corrupt countries were Finland, Denmark and New Zealand with a score of 88 at the top.

• पिछले साल भारत 86वें स्थान पर था।
