Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh left for a three-day (May 28 to 30, 2023) official visit to the West African country of Nigeria.

Important Points:

• Rajnath Singh attends the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Eagle Square in Abuja on May 29.
• He also met with outgoing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari during a reception hosted for him on 28 May.
• This is the first visit by an Indian Defense Minister to Nigeria.
• There are about 50,000 Indian communities in Nigeria. During the visit, the Raksha Mantri will also address the Indian diaspora in Abuja.
• He will hold meetings with representatives of Nigerian industry and the armed forces to identify equipment and platforms through which the Indian defense industry can support the needs of that country.
• This visit of the Indian Defense Minister will prove to be an important milestone in building strong bonds of friendship between the two countries.

Indian head constables Shishupal Singh and Sanwala Ram Vishnoi were posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjold Medal.

• The Dag Hammarskjold Medal is the highest award given to United Nations peacekeepers.
• The medals were received by Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations on behalf of the departed Head Constables.
• The Dag Hammarskjold Medal is awarded posthumously to peacekeepers who have lost their lives during peacekeeping operations.
• The award ceremony took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to mark the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) set up an 11-member Cheetah Project Steering Committee under the leadership of Rajesh Gopal, general secretary of the Global Tiger Forum.

• The committee works under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
• Rajesh Gopal, general secretary of the Global Tiger Forum, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee.
• The decision to form the committee was taken after the death of six cheetahs involved in the translocation project.
• The objective of the committee is to address the challenges and issues related to the Cheetah Translocation Project.

National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA):

Center to launch a new ₹75 coin on 28 May 2023 to mark the opening of the new Parliament.

Important Points:

• The coin was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28 and coincides with the celebration of 75 years of India's independence.
• The obverse of this coin has the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar and the words "Satyamev Jayate" below it.
• The coin also bears the inscription "Bharat" in Devanagari script on the left and "India" in English on the right.
• It displays the rupee symbol below the Lion Capital and the denomination value of 75 in International Numerals.

• Himachal Pradesh government has signed an agreement with Oil India Limited (OIL) for the production of green hydrogen.
• Oil India Limited will produce green hydrogen for ethanol production in the state.
• Government of Himachal Pradesh Alternative fuel can be used as a replacement for petrol.

हिमाचल प्रदेश राज्य ने हरित हाइड्रोजन नीति तैयार करने का निर्णय लिया हैl

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the community event in Sydney during his Australian visit informed that a new consulate will be constructed in Brisbane.

Important Points:

• The main objective of setting up the Consulate in Brisbane is to fulfill the long standing demand of Indian expatriates in Australia.
• This was announced during Prime Minister Modi's address at the Kudos Bank Arena in Sydney, which was attended by over 21,000 people across Australia, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
• Meanwhile, Prime Minister Albanese also declared Harris Park as "Little India" during the reception for Prime Minister Modi.
• Harris Park is a center in western Sydney where the Indian community celebrates Indian festivals and events including Diwali and Australia Day.

विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (डब्लूएचओ) द्वारा 76वीं विश्व स्वास्थ्य सभा की शुरुआत 21 मई 2023 को जिनेवा, स्विट्जरलैंड में की गई।

• दस दिवसीय इस 76वीं विश्व स्वास्थ्य सभा का आयोजन 21 से 30 मई 2023 तक किया गया।

On 23 May 2023, the  Asian Development Bank (ADB)  and the Government of India signed a  $141.12 million loan agreement  for the development of an industrial corridor in  Andhra Pradesh.

Important Points:

• The agreement has been signed to support the development of high quality indoor infrastructure facilities in three industrial areas in Andhra Pradesh. These are:  roads, water supply plants and power distribution systems.
• The loan is the second tranche of a $500 million  Multi-tranche Financing Facility (MFF)  under the program approved by ADB in 2016.
• With this loan facility, infrastructure facilities will be developed in three industrial clusters under the  Visakhapatnam and Srikalahasti-Chittoor  areas sanctioned in Andhra Pradesh.

23 मई 2023 को  एशियाई विकास बैंक (एडीबी)  और भारत सरकार ने  आंध्र प्रदेश में औद्योगिक गलियारे के विकास  के लिये 141.12 मिलियन डॉलर के ऋण समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

• यह समझौता आंध्र प्रदेश में तीन औद्योगिक क्षेत्रों में उच्च गुणवत्ता वाली आंतरिक बुनियादी सुविधाओं के विकास को समर्थन देने के लिये किया गया है। ये हैं:  सड़क, जलापूर्ति संयंत्र  और  विद्युत वितरण तंत्र। 
• यह ऋण एडीबी द्वारा वर्ष 2016 में मंजूर किए गए कार्यक्रम के तहत  500 मिलियन डॉलर  के कई किस्त वाली वित्तपोषण सुविधा (एमएफएफ) की दूसरी किस्त है। 
• इस ऋण सुविधा से  आंध्र प्रदेश  के  विशाखापत्तनम  और  श्रीकलाहस्ती-चित्तूर  क्षेत्र मंजूरी के तहत तीन  औद्योगिक क्लस्टरों  में बुनियादी सुविधाओं का विकास किया जायेगा।

The Indian Navy achieved a significant milestone on May 24, 2023 by performing the first-ever night landing of a MiG-29K onboard INS Vikrant.

Important Points:

• It is noteworthy in this context that the MiG-29K night landing within three months of the first landing on INS Vikrant is a challenging feat.
• INS Vikrant is currently undergoing air certification and flight integration trials with rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft to achieve 'combat ready' status very quickly.
• As part of these trials, the first landing of MiG-29K and indigenous LCA (Navy) took place on 06 February 2023 and since then there has been considerable progress in day and night landing trials of all helicopters of the Indian Navy.

MiG-29K:

• It is capable of flying in any weather.
• This jet is part of the fighter fleet of INS Vikrant.
• It can fly at twice the speed of sound (2000 km per hour).
• It is capable of carrying a load eight times its own weight.
• It can fly at an altitude of 65000 feet.

INS Vikrant:

• The country's first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant has completed extensive sea trials ahead of her maiden voyage on August 4, 2021.
• It was inducted into the Indian Navy on 2 September 2022 in the presence of the Prime Minister.
• It is modeled after INS Ajay, the first indigenous warship built in the country, and INS Nilgiri, the indigenous light warship (frigate).
• Built by : M/s Cochin Shipyard Limited.

भारतीय नौसेना ने 24 मई, 2023 को मिग-29K की आईएनएस विक्रांत पर प्रथम बार रात में लैंडिंग करके एक महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धि प्राप्त की है। 

महत्वपूर्ण बिंदु:- 

• इस सन्दर्भ में उल्लेखनीय है कि आईएनएस विक्रांत पर पहली लैंडिंग के तीन महीने के भीतर मिग-29K का रात में लैंडिंग एक चुनौतीपूर्ण उपलब्धि है।
• वर्तमान में आईएनएस विक्रांत अति शीघ्र 'युद्ध के लिए तैयार' स्थिति प्राप्त करने के लिए रोटरी विंग और फिक्स्ड विंग विमान के साथ हवाई प्रमाणन व उड़ान एकीकरण परीक्षण कर रहा है। 
• इन परीक्षणों के भाग के तहत मिग-29K और स्वदेशी एलसीए (नौसेना) की पहली लैंडिंग 6 फरवरी, 2023 को हुई थी और इसके बाद से भारतीय नौसेना के सभी हेलीकाप्टरों के दिन और रात में लैंडिंग परीक्षणों में काफी प्रगति हुई है।

मिग-29K: 

• यह क‍िसी भी मौसम में उड़ान भरने में सक्षम है।
• यह जेट आईएनएस विक्रांत के लड़ाकू बेड़े का हिस्सा है।
• यह ध्वनि से दोगुनी रफ्तार (2000 किमी प्रति घंटा) पर उड़ान भर सकता है।
• यह अपने वजन से आठ गुना अधिक भार वहन करने में सक्षम है। 
• यह 65000 फीट की ऊंचाई पर उड़ सकता है। 

आईएनएस विक्रांत: 

• देश के पहले स्वदेशी रूप से डिज़ाइन और निर्मित किये गए विमानवाहक पोत आईएनएस विक्रांत 4 अगस्त, 2021 को अपनी पहली यात्रा के बाद व्यापक समुद्री परीक्षणों को पूरा किया है।
• इसे प्रधानमंत्री की उपस्थिति में 2 सितंबर, 2022 को भारतीय नौसेना में इसे शामिल किया गया था। 
• देश में निर्मित पहले स्वदेशी युद्धपोत आईएनएस अजय और स्वदेशी हल्के युद्धपोत (फ्रिगेट) आईएनएस नीलगिरि के बाद इसका निर्माण किया गया है।
• निर्माण : मैसर्स कोचीन शिपयार्ड लिमिटेड। 

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar released the third advance estimates of production of major crops for the agricultural year 2022-23. In which food grains production has been estimated at 3305.34 lakh tonnes in the current agricultural year.

Important Points:

• In this, record production of rice, wheat, maize, soybean, rapeseed and mustard and sugarcane has been estimated.
• As per the 3rd Advance Estimates for 2022-23, the estimated production of major crops is as follows:
• Total food grain production: 3305.34 lakh tonnes (record). This is 149.18 lakh tonnes more than the previous year 2021-22.

Main food grains :

• Rice: 1355.42 lakh tonnes, which is 60.71 lakh tonnes more than last year.
• Wheat: 1127.43 lakh tonnes
• Bajra: 111.66 lakh tonnes
• Nutri/Coarse Cereals (Shri Anna): 547.48 Lakh Tonnes
• Maize: 359.13 lakh tonnes
• Total pulses: 275.04 lakh tonnes
  • Gram: 135.43 lakh tonnes
  • Moong: 37.40 lakh tonnes
• Oilseeds: 409.96 lakh tonnes
  • Groundnut: 102.82 lakh tonnes
  • Soybean: 149.76 lakh tonnes
  • Rapeseed and mustard: 124.94 lakh tonnes
• Cotton: 343.47 lakh bales (170 kg per bale)
• Sugarcane: 4942.28 lakh tonnes
• Jute and Mesta: 94.94 lakh bales (180 kg per bale).

केन्द्रीय कृषि एवं किसान कल्‍याण मंत्री नरेंद्र सिंह तोमर ने कृषि वर्ष 2022-23 के लिए मुख्‍य फसलों के उत्‍पादन के तीसरे अग्रिम अनुमान जारी किए। जिसमें चालू कृषि वर्ष में 3305.34 लाख टन खाद्यान्न उत्पादन का अनुमान लगाया गया है।

महत्वपूर्ण बिंदु:- 

• इसमें चावल, गेहूं, मक्का, सोयाबीन, रेपसीड एवं सरसों व गन्ने का रिकार्ड उत्पादन का अनुमान लगाया गया है।
• 2022-23 के लिए तृतीय अग्रिम अनुमान अनुसार, मुख्‍य फसलों के अनुमानित उत्‍पादन निम्न प्रकार से है:
• कुल खाद्यान्‍न उत्पादन : 3305.34 लाख टन (रिकॉर्ड) है। यह गत वर्ष 2021-22 की तुलना में 149.18 लाख टन अधिक है।

The crew of INSV Tarini, who returned after an inter-continental voyage, were accorded a grand welcome at the flag-in ceremony in Goa. 

Important Points:

• The crew returned home on 23 May after an arduous voyage of 17,000 nautical miles over seven months.
• Two women officers, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A, were involved in the entire operation.
• Lt Cdr Dilna is a Logistics Officer in the Navy.
• Roopa, who hails from Puducherry, has graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from Chennai. He is a Naval Armament Inspection Officer.
• Both Dilna and Roopa are currently posted at INS Mandovi in Goa.
• The historic voyage from Goa to Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town was completed by INSV Tarini in 188 days.
• It reflects an exemplary display of gallantry, courage and tenacity by the crew and highlights the role of the Indian Navy as a pioneer in the country in ocean sailing.

अंतरमहाद्वीपीय यात्रा के बाद लौटे आईएनएसवी तारिणी के चालक दल का गोवा में फ्लैग-इन समारोह में भव्य स्वागत किया गया।

• यह दल सात महीने में 17,000 समुद्री मील की कठिन यात्रा कर 23 मई को स्वदेश लौटा।
• इस पूरे अभियान में दो महिला अधिकारियों लेफ्टिनेंट कमांडर दिलना के और लेफ्टिनेंट कमांडर रूपा ए शामिल रहीं।
• लेफ्टिनेंट कमांडर दिलना के नेवी में लॉजिस्टिक्स ऑफिसर हैं। 
• पुदुचेरी की रहने वाली रूपा ने चेन्नई से एरोनॉटिकल इंजीनियरिंग में ग्रेजुएशन किया है। वह नेवल आर्मामेंट इंस्पेक्शन अफसर हैं। 
• द‍िलना और रूपा, दोनों ही वर्तमान में गोवा में आईएनएस मंडोवी में तैनात हैं। 
• INSV तारिणी द्वारा गोवा से रियो डी जनेरियो से केप टाउन तक की ऐतिहासिक यात्रा 188 दिनों में पूर्ण की गई है।
• यह चालक दल द्वारा वीरता, साहस और दृढ़ता के अनुकरणीय प्रदर्शन को दर्शाता है और समुद्री नौकायन में देश में अग्रणी के रूप में भारतीय नौसेना की भूमिका को उजागर करता है।

Indian Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar won gold while compatriot Jeswin Aldrin finished bagged silver at the International Jumping Meeting 2023 at Kallithea in Greece on 24th May. 

Important Points:

• Kerala's Murali Sreesankar won the gold medal in the International Jumping Meet with a jump of 8.31 metres.
• Sreeshankar, who has played in the Tokyo Olympics, holds the national record of 8.36 metres.
• Sweden's Tobias Montaller won the silver with a jump of 8.27m, while France's Jules Pommery won the bronze.
• This was Murali Sreesankar's third competition of the year and also won the third gold medal.
• Jeswin Aldrin claimed silver with an effort of 7.85m.
