The Government of India has appointed Vigilance Commissioner Praveen Kumar Srivastava as the acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) on 28 December 2022.

Important point -

• The current CVC chief Suresh N Patel completes his term on 24 December 2022.
• Praveen Kumar Srivastava is a 1988-batch (retd) Indian Administrative Service officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He retired on 31 January 2022.
• The Vigilance Commission is headed by the CVC and may have a maximum of two other Vigilance Commissioners. Besides Srivastava, former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Arvind Kumar is the other vigilance commissioner.
• The tenure of a CVC and Vigilance Commissioner is for four years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years.
• On the recommendations of the Prevention of Corruption Committee headed by K Santhanam, the government set up the Central Vigilance Commission in February, 1964.
• It was made a statutory body by an ordinance issued by the President in 1998 and later the ordinance was replaced by the Central Vigilance Commission Act 2003.
• It consists of a Chairman and two Vigilance Commissioners.

• प्रवीण कुमार श्रीवास्तव असम-मेघालय कैडर के 1988-बैच (सेवानिवृत्त) भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा के अधिकारी हैं। वह 31 जनवरी 2022 को सेवानिवृत्त हुए।
• सतर्कता आयोग की अध्यक्षता सीवीसी करता है और इसमें अधिकतम दो अन्य सतर्कता आयुक्त हो सकते हैं। श्रीवास्तव के अलावा, खुफिया ब्यूरो (आईबी) के पूर्व प्रमुख अरविंद कुमार दूसरे सतर्कता आयुक्त हैं।
• एक सीवीसी और सतर्कता आयुक्त का कार्यकाल चार वर्ष या पदधारी के 65 वर्ष की आयु प्राप्त करने तक का होता है।
• के संथानम की अध्‍यक्षता वाली भ्रष्टाचार निवारण समिति की सिफारिशों पर सरकार ने फरवरी,1964 में केन्‍द्रीय सतर्कता आयोग की स्‍थापना की।
• इसे 1998 में राष्ट्रपति द्वारा जारी एक अध्यादेश द्वारा इसे  एक वैधानिक निकाय बनाया गया था और बाद में अध्यादेश को केंद्रीय सतर्कता आयोग अधिनियम 2003 द्वारा प्रतिस्थापित किया गया था।
• इसमें एक अध्यक्ष और दो सतर्कता आयुक्त होते हैं।

The 'Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project' built with Indian assistance was handed over by India to Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC).

Important Points:

• Mangdechhu Hydropower Project is a 720 MW project.
• The establishment of the Mangdechhu hydroelectric power plant on the Mangdechhu River in the Trongsa district of Bhutan has increased the power generation capacity of Bhutan by 44 percent.
• The project was financed by India through a 70 percent loan and 30 percent grant.
• The project received the Brunel Medal 2020 from the Institute of Civil Engineers, London.

भारतीय सहायता से निर्मित 'मांगदेछू जलविद्युत परियोजना' भारत द्वारा भूटान के ड्रक ग्रीन पावर कॉरपोरेशन (DGPC) को सौंपी गई थी।

• मंगदेछु जलविद्युत परियोजना 720 मेगावाट की परियोजना है।
• भूटान के ट्रोंगसा जिले में मंगदेछु नदी पर मंगदेछु पनबिजली संयंत्र की स्थापना से भूटान की बिजली उत्पादन क्षमता में 44 प्रतिशत की वृद्धि हुई है।
• इस परियोजना को भारत ने 70 प्रतिशत ऋण और 30 प्रतिशत अनुदान के माध्यम से वित्तपोषित किया था।
• इस परियोजना को इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ सिविल इंजीनियर्स, लंदन से ब्रूनल मेडल 2020 प्राप्त हुआ।

Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy RK Singh announced to set up a world class Kayaking-Canoeing Academy in Tehri, Uttarakhand during the inauguration of National Championship “Tehri Water Sports Cup” at Tehri Lake on December 28, 2022.

• In this academy, the youth of Uttarakhand will be prepared to play at the national and international level by providing all the facilities along with free training.
• The new sports policy has been implemented in the state and the government has also announced re-implementation of sports quota in jobs.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the conference on development works in Union Territories in New Delhi on 29 December.

Important facts

• Lieutenant Governors and Administrators of UTs including from Delhi, Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar, Puducherry, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir attended the conference. 
• The conference reviewed the economic development, tourism and major schemes and future roadmap of the Union Territories to ensure their strong growth.
• Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta and Umang Narula, Advisor to Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh represented Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh UTs respectively.
• The objective of the conference is to ensure the development of the Union Territories in all respects including development works, projects and centrally sponsored schemes, besides ensuring that they (schemes) do not miss the deadline.
• The focus of the conference was on economic development, tourism potential and flagship schemes.
• In another programme, Shah also inaugurated the Border Security Force’s BSF App and BSF Manuals.

The Indian Army inaugurated its first3-D Printed House Dwelling Unit(with Ground plus One configuration) for soldiers atAhmedabad Cantton 28 December 2022.

Important Facts: 

• The dwelling unit has been constructed byMilitary Engineering Services (MES)in association with MiCoB Pvt Ltd, incorporating the latest3D Rapid Construction Technology.
• The 71 sqm dwelling unit with garage space was completed in just 12 weeks using 3D printed foundations, walls and slabs.
• The disaster-resistant structures comply with Zone-III earthquake specifications and green building norms.
• The formation is a testimony to the commitment of the Indian Army in promoting the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan'.

About Technology

• This technique uses a solid 3D printer that accepts computerised three-dimensional designs.
• It builds up a 3-D structure in a layer-by-layer manner by extruding a specially designed special type of concrete.
• The Ahmedabad-basedGolden Katar Divisionof the Indian Army has been instrumental in taking forward the project with manifold applications in operation.

What is 3D Printing?

• 3D printing uses computer aided design (CAD) to create three-dimensional objects through the layering method.
• The model to be printed with the help of software is first developed by the computer, which then instructs the 3D printer.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has won significant recognition at the 'Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards'. It is called the 'Oscar of education'.

Important Points- 

• IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications won the Silver Medal in the 'Best Online Program' category, NPTEL (National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning), a joint initiative of  IITs  and IISc ,won the Gold Medal in the 'Lifelong Learning' category.
• The Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of educators, institutions and organizations that drive innovation and excellence in education.

BS degree program of IIT Madras- 

• The program currently has over 15,000 students enrolled at various levels.
• It aims to help students stay ahead in their career journey. The program is in hybrid mode consisting of online delivery and in-person assessment.

National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL): 

• NPTEL offers over 4,000 courses for certification, with over two crore enrollments and over 23 lakh exam registrations.
• It is the largest technology dissemination program in India. It is a consortium of seven IITs and IISc and IIT Madras leads the effort.

India has allowed the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to export an additional 40 MW of power from two more hydroelectric projects.

Important Points-

• The Central Electricity Authority of India has approved the sale of surplus power from two more hydro projects - 25 MW Kabeli B-1 and 20 MW Lower Modi - at competitive rates in the Indian energy market.
• In this, 452.6 MW of surplus power can be exported to India from 10 hydropower projects.
• As on 18 December, NEA has generated net income of Rs 11.16 billion by trading 1.36 billion units of surplus power at a competitive rate in the Indian energy market.
• Nepal's current electricity demand is 1,680 MW, and domestic production is 1,000 MW.

भारत ने नेपाल विद्युत प्राधिकरण (एनईए) को दो और जलविद्युत परियोजनाओं से अतिरिक्त 40 मेगावाट बिजली निर्यात करने की अनुमति दी है।

महत्वपूर्ण बिंदु-

• भारतीय केंद्रीय विद्युत प्राधिकरण ने भारतीय ऊर्जा बाजार में प्रतिस्पर्धी दरों पर दो और जलविद्युत परियोजनाओं - 25 मेगावाट काबेली बी-1 और 20 मेगावाट लोअर मोदी से अधिशेष बिजली की बिक्री को मंजूरी दी है।
• इसमें 10 जल विद्युत परियोजनाओं से भारत को 452.6 मेगावाट अधिशेष बिजली का निर्यात किया जा सकता है।
• 18 दिसंबर तक एनईए ने भारतीय ऊर्जा बाजार में प्रतिस्पर्धी दर पर 1.36 अरब यूनिट अधिशेष बिजली का व्यापार करके 11.16 अरब रुपये की शुद्ध आय अर्जित की है।
• नेपाल की वर्तमान बिजली की मांग 1,680 मेगावाट है, और घरेलू उत्पादन 1,000 मेगावाट है।
