75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution

Why in the news?

  • On 26th November 2024, marking Samvidhan Diwas and the 75th anniversaryof the adoption of the Indian Constitution, President Droupadi Murmu unveiled the Sanskrit and Maithili translations of the Indian Constitution in New Delhi.

Important points:

  • President Droupadi Murmu unveiled the Indian constitution's translation in Sanskrit and Maithili language in New Delhi on 26 November 2024 on the occasion of the Samvidhan Diwas. Maithili is mainly spoken in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Nepal.
  • On the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu addressed ajoint sitting of both houses of Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
  • The government of India has undertaken a project to translate the Indian constitution into all 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

Samvidhan Diwas :

  • The Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Indian constitution on26 November 1949, which was promulgated on 26 January 1950.
  • Since 2015, 26 November has been observed in the country as the Samvidhan Diwas. 
  • A function was held in the Parliament's Samvidhan Sadan to observe the Samvidhan Diwas and the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the constitution.

Significance:

  •  The event celebrated the rich diversity of India’s linguistic heritage and reaffirmed the significance of the Constitution as the guiding framework for the country.
  • The old Parliament building has been renamedSamvidhan Sadan by the Modi government.
