1. Mauritius confers its highest honour ‘Order of the Star and Key of Indian Ocean’ on PM Modi

Why in the news?

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi  was bestowed with the topmost honour of Mauritius, the "Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean".

Important points:

  • Mr. Modi is the first Indian to receive the honour, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
  •  It is the 21st international honour bestowed upon Mr. Modi by a foreign country.
  • Mr. Modi reached Mauritius early on Tuesday and he called on the President of Mauritius Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House. 
  • As a special gesture Mr. Modi handed over Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to President Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool. President Gokhool hosted a state lunch for the Indian PM.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool and Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam visit the Ayurveda Garden in the State House, established in collaboration with the Government of India.

2. PM Modi conferred with 'Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados' award

  • Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles,received the 'Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados' Award on behalf of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed his gratitude to the Government and the people of Barbados for the ‘Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados’ Award.
  •  Shri Modi has dedicated this honour to the 1.4 billion Indians and to the close relations between India and Barbados.
  •  PM Modi's statement came in response to a post shared by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, where he mentioned that he received the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados' Award on behalf of PM Modi from Barbados President Dame Sandra Mason.
  • Margherita said the award was bestowed upon PM Modi in acknowledgement of his strategic leadership and significant assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

6. President approves conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards-2024

  • The President of India has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards – 2024 on 49 persons which includes Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 17, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 09 and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 23 persons. Six awardees are posthumous.  

About Jeevan Raksha Padak :

  • Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards are given to a person for meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person.  
  • The award is given in three categories, namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak. 
  •  Persons of all walks of life are eligible for these awards.  The award can also be conferred posthumously.
  • The decoration of the award consists of a Medal, Certificate signed by the Union Home Minister and lump sum Monetary Allowance.
  •  It is presented to the awardees by the respective Union Ministries/Organizations/State Government to which the awardee belongs.

  • 113 are awarded with Padma Shree, 19 with Padma Bhushan and 7, Padma Vibhushan; MT. Vasudevan Nair, Osamu Suzuki and Sharda Sinha are posthumously awarded with Padma Vibhushan.
  • Deceased writerM.T. Vasudevan Nair, hockey player and Olympian P.R. Sreejesh, actors Nandamuri Balakrishna and Ajith Kumar, Cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin and deceased industrialist Osamu Suzuki are some of the eminent persons who got the awards.

About Padma Awards:

  • Padma Awards -one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. 
  • The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
  • ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. 
  • The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
