1. Fire ravages South African parliament

A massive fire in South Africa’s Parliament in Cape Town has completely destroyed its lower house , the National Assembly  on 2 January 2022.l

  • The name of South Africa’s Parliament is: “The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa ''.

  • The lower house is called the National Assembly and the Upper House is called the National Council of Provinces .

2. Denmark not to use fossil fuels on Domestic flights by 2030

  • The Prime Minister Mette Frederilksen  has announced that by 2030 the domestic airlines will not use fossil fuels in order to meet its emission target .
  • The Danish Government has set a target of reducing its carbon emission by 70 % by 2030.
  • Airline uses ATF(Aviation Turbine Fuel) is derived from hydrocarbons which are either Kerosene type or naphtha type.
  • Green fuel for airlines or Sustainable Aviation Fuels is produced from agricultural residues , waste oil from a biological  origin etc .

3. India gift Covaxin to Afghanistan

  • India has gifted 5 lakh Bharat Biotech-made Covaxin corona vaccines to Afghanistan. This is part of the 10 lakh vaccine to be gifted by the Government of India to Afghanistan .
  • The consignment was sent to Afghanistan by the Iranian  Mahan Airlines.
  • The consignment will be handed over to the UN official in the Indira Gandhi Children hospital  in Kabul .
  • India earlier sent vaccines to Afghanistan in February 2021 when Ashraf Ghani was in power in Afghanistan.
  • This is the first time India has sent vaccines to Afghanistan after the Taliban captured power in August 2021 and the Government of India does not recognise the Taliban government in Kabul.

Maitri Vaccine initiative of the Government of India 

  • In January 2021 ,Government of India launched the vaccine maitri initiative to supply domestically produced corona vaccine, Covishield made by Serum Institute of India  and  Bharat Biotech made Covaxin to the neighbouring countries in South Asia and to the poor and developing countries in the world .
  • The vaccines were  to be provided to these countries as a grant or on a commercial basis .The first country to receive the Serum Institute of India (SII) made  vaccine, Covishield  was  Bhutan and later Maldives on 20 January 2021.
  • The export of vaccine was halted by the Government of India in the month of April 2021 after the devastating second corona wave in India. The export of vaccines was put on hold by the Government of India.
  • The Government of India restarted the export of corona vaccine in the month of October 2021.
  • India is the largest producer of vaccine in the world.

4. China renames 15 Places in Arunachal Pradesh

  • China has renamed 15 places in Arunachal Pradesh to reaffirm its claim on the state.
  • China's Ministry of Civil Affairs announced that it had standardised in Chinese characters, Tibetan and Roman alphabet the names of 15 places in Zangnan, the Chinese name for Arunachal Pradesh.
  • China claims 90,000 sq. km of areas in Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory and calls it Zangnam or South Tibet.
  • The Government of India has rejected the Chinese claim.

5. “Israel”, first country to give 4 doses of COVID-19 vaccine

  • Israel approved a fourth dose of Covid vaccine for people with weakened immune systems.
  • Israel’s Pandemic Expert Committee has recommended a fourth dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for all people aged over 60, medics and those with compromised immunity, at least four months after their third jab.
  • The move was welcomed by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who said it would help the country get through a potential wave of the Omicron variant.

6. India welcomes Egypt as 4th new member of BRICS New Development Bank

  • India on 29th December 2021 welcomed Egypt’s entry as the fourth new member of the New Development Bank (NDB) that was established by the BRICS countries six years ago.
  • The NDB admitted Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Uruguay as its new members in September 2021.

7. United Arab Emirates issued its first civil marriage licence to a non-muslim couple

  • A Canadian couple were the first to marry under the new law on the personal status of non-Muslims in the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.
  • UAE in November 2021 had announced that non-muslims would be allowed to marry, divorce and get joint child custody under civil law in Abu Dhabi according to a new decree issued by its ruler.
  • The United Arab Emirates, where foreigners make up 90% of the approximately 10 ­million population has been amending its laws to present itself as a modernising force in a largely conservative region. 
  • In the United Arab Emirates personal status laws on marriage and divorce had formerly been based on Islamic sharia principles, as in other Gulf states.

8. UN Special Envoy calls for New Year’s ceasefire in Myanmar

  • United Nation’s special Envoy Noeleen Heyzer said she is deeply concerned by increased violence in Kayah state of Myanmar and other areas, which has displaced thousands of civilians, many of whom have fled the country for protection and assistance.
  • “The people of Myanmar have already suffered tremendously and the socio-economic and humanitarian situation has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Ms. Heyzer.  
  • Ms. Heyzer urged all parties to act in the greater interest of the nation and to fully respect their obligations under international law to protect civilians, ensure free movement towards safety, and allow humanitarian access to those in need.  
  • “To this end, she appeals for a New Year’s ceasefire throughout Myanmar,” the statement said.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Ms. Heyzer as his Special Envoy on Myanmar back in October 2021. She succeeded Christine Shraner Burgener, who had served since April 2018. 

Issue in Myanmar

Myanmar has been in sheer chaos since February 1, 2021, when the military junta overthrew the government and imprisoned the leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been sentenced to four years detention and faces multiple other criminal charges.

  • At least 1,375 people have been killed and more than 8,000 jailed due to the protests and oppositions since the coup.

9. UAE has lifted ban on import of Poultry products from India

  • The United Arab Emirates has lifted the ban on the import of eggs and other poultry products from India .
  • The ban was lifted after India assured UAE that it will follow bio safety norms set by the World Health Organisations for Animal Health to prevent infection from Bird flu.
  •  UAE banned import of poultry products five years back on the concern over bird flu.
  • UAE is the third largest trade partner of India after  China and the United States with a bilateral trade of around USD60 billion last year.
  • It is  the third largest  export market for India after the U.S and China

10. India hand over relief material to Mozambique under Mission Sagar

  • Naval ship INS Kesari entered the Port of Maputo in Mozambique to deliver 500 tonnes of food aid as well as defence equipment, under the eight edition of Mission Sagar by the Navy to assist friendly foreign countries in the region.
  • India handed over two Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) and other self-defence equipment to Mozambique to assist in its capacity building as the Central African nation battles growing terror threats of Islmaic state also called as Daesh.

  • Mission SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) was launched by the Government on May 10, 2020 to provide assistance to the countries in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • It is being conducted in close coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, and other agencies of the Government agencies
