Xiomara Castro has been sworn in as Honduras' first female president on 27th January 2022.Castro blasted the outgoing administration for leaving her a heavily indebted country where poverty and a lack of opportunity have driven hundred of thousands of Hondurans to migrate in recent years.
- She was sworn in during a ceremony at a national stadium in the capital, Tegucigalpa.
- Castro is taking over from right-wing President Juan Orlando Hernandez.

3. Anantha Nageswaran takes over as Chief Economic Advisor

Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran an academic and former executive with Credit Suisse Group AG and Julius Baer Group has been appointed as the Chief Economic Advisor to the government of India on 28th January 2022.
- Dr. Nageswaran was a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India from 2019 to 2021.
- Dr. Nageswaran has worked as a writer, author, teacher and consultant prior to his appointment to this post and was the Dean of the IFMR Graduate School of Business and a distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University.
- Nageswaran succeeds Krishnamurthy Subramanian, who returned to academia in October 2021 after completing his three-year tenure.
Role of the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance:
- Advises the Government of India on matters related to finance, commerce, trade, economy and heads the Economic Division under the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA).
- The CEA reports directly to the Minister of Finance.
4. Hockey legend Charanjit Singh dies

Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Charanjeet Singh, former Indian Hockey Captain for 1964 Olympics passed away on 27th January 2022, at his home in Una, Himachal Pradesh after suffering a cardiac arrest.
- Besides captaining the Olympic gold-winning team in 1964, he was also a part of the silver-winning side in the 1960 edition of the Games.
- He was also a part of the 1962 Asian Games silver-winning team.
5. Noted Kathakali dancer Milena Salvinii passes way

Noted Kathakali dancer Ms. Milena Salvini passed away in Paris on 25th January 2022 at the age of 85.
- Milena Salvini was an Italian-born French exponent and teacher of Indian classical dance,especially known for her services to Kathakali.
- She obtained her Kathakali training at the Kerala Kalamandalam.Upon her return to France,she established a tour by the Kathakali troupe of the Kalamandalamunder the auspices of UNESCO.
- In 2019 she was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.
- Kathakali is one of the eight classical dances of India and is associated with the State of Kerala.
6. German Navy Chief Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schonbach Resign

The German Navy Chief Vice Admiral Kay Achim Schonbach resigned from his post on 22 January 2022 for his comments made by him during his official visit to India.
- During his speech at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis, New Delhi he said that Ukraine would never get back the Crimean peninsula which Moscow annexed in March 2014 and the Russian President Putin deserves respect.
- This was in direct contradiction of the German government policy which considers the Russian annexation of Crimea as illegal and it opposes the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Former India footballer Subhas Bhowmick,popularly known as ‘Bhombolda' , died on 22 January 2022 in Kolkata following a prolonged illness.
·He was a part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal in the 1970 Asian Games held at Bangkok, Thailand.
·He also had a successful career as a coach. He helped the East Bengal football club to win the ASEAN Club cup in 2003.
8. Father of Mindfulness and the influential Zen Buddhist Monk “Thich Nhat Hanh” passed away

After dedicating a lifetime to promote peace and compassion in the world, author, activist and Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh left the planet for his heavenly abode, on 22nd January 2022.
- Known as the Father of Mindfulness, he was born as Nguyen Xuan Bao in 1926.
- Ordained as a monk at the age of 16, he is now remembered fondly as one who introduced the concept of mindfulness to the West.
- Hanh also authored more than a hundred books, including “The Miracle of Mindfulness” and “Peace Is Every Step”.
- During the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Hanh had met civil rights leader Martin Luther King in the US, and also persuaded him to speak against the conflict. Subsequently, King nominated the monk for Nobel Peace Prize, describing him as, “an apostle of peace and non-violence.”
9. Justice Ayesha Malik: First Woman judge of Supreme Court of Pakistan

Justice Ayesha Malik will be Pakistan's first-ever woman judge of the Supreme Court, a watershed moment in the judicial history of the conservative Muslim country.
- The historic development came just two days after the bipartisan Parliamentary Committee on the Appointment of Superior Judiciary approved the 55-year-old justice's nomination as the Supreme Court judge. The nomination was sent by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) earlier this month.
- Justice Malik was appointed as a judge of the Lahore High Court in March 2012. She will now work as a Supreme Court judge until her superannuation in June 2031. She would be in the line to become the chief justice also in January 2030 on the basis of her seniority.
- Born in 1966, Malik completed her basic education from schools in Paris, New York, and Karachi.
- She studied law at Pakistan College of Law, Lahore and did her LLM from Harvard Law School, according to the Lahore High Court website.
10. Sania Mirza to retire after 2022 season

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza on 19th January 2022 announced that she will hang up her racquet at the end of 2022 season as her body is "wearing down" and the motivation and energy for everyday grind is not the same anymore.
- Winner of six Grand Slam titles, including three mixed doubles trophies, Sania will retire as India's most accomplished woman tennis player.
- The 35-year-old made the retirement announcement after losing the Australian Open women's doubles first round with partner Nadiia Kichenok.
