1. Dr Peggy Mohan wins 'Mathrubhumi Book of the Year' award

Author Dr Peggy Mohan has won the 'Mathrubhumi Book of the Year' award during the 4th edition of Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL 2023).

He has been given this award for his book 'Wanderers, Kings and Merchants', which portrays the development of language as a result of migration.
In this award, he was given a statuette and two lakh rupees as a cash prize.
The award was presented to Dr Peggy Mohan by Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah at the closing ceremony of MBIFL 2023.

She is a Trinidadian-born writer and a linguist.
He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Michigan, USA.

Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL):
Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters was started in the year 2018.
MBIFL 2023 was inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
This was the 4th edition of MBIFL with the theme "Shadows of History, Light of the Future ''.

3. Former PM Manmohan Singh conferred Lifetime Achievement Honour in UK

Former prime minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh was conferred a Lifetime Achievement Honour by the India-UK Achievers Honours in London for his contribution to economic and political life.

The award will be handed over to Dr Singh in New Delhi by the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK.
The India-UK Achievers Honors is organised by the National Association of Indian Students and Alumni UK in partnership with the British Council in India and the UK's Department for International Trade (DIT).
The 'Life Time Achievement Honor' recognizes Dr Manmohan Singh's contribution to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
75 people who have achieved achievements in various fields have been honoured with this honour while some people have been honoured with 'Outstanding Achievers'.
Lord Karan Bilimoria, a British citizen of Indian origin, was honoured with the 'Living Legend Honor' at a ceremony held on 25 January.
Britain's opposition Labor Party MP Virendra Sharma was also honoured with the 'Living Legend Honor'.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, a 90-year-old economist, served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004–2014.
4. Announcement of best marching contingents and tableau for 74th Republic Day Parade

Uttarakhand (Manaskhand), Maharashtra (Sade Tin Shaktipeeth and Nari Shakti) and Uttar Pradesh (Ayodhya Deepotsav) have been selected for best three tableaux from States and Union Territories respectively.

A tableau based on the theme of wildlife and religious places of the state was displayed by the Uttarakhand government.
In the forefront of the tableau, the Corbett National Park featured deer, reindeer and a variety of birds.
Its centre featured the state animal musk deer, the national bird peacock and the ghoral.
Next, the tableau of Jageshwar Dham was displayed in Manskhand of Almora district. There are 125 big, small ancient temples here and deodar trees were shown at the back.
Best Marching Squad
The Punjab Regiment has received the award for the best marching contingent in all the three services.

The best marching contingent award went to the marching contingent of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Best Tableaux in Ministries and Departments
The tableau of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (Eklavya Model Residential School, EMRS) was adjudged best among ministries and departments.
Special award
The special award was given to the 'Biodiversity Conservation and Vande Bharatam' dance group of the Central Public Works Department.

Why were the Jeevan Raksha Padak awards given?
On 12 May 2022, in the jurisdiction of Nizamuddin Railway Station BTPN wagon caught fire due to technical reasons.
At that time about 1000 persons were working at the site.
An atmosphere of fear was created after seeing the fire taking a dreadful form.
To save their lives, the workers started running here and there in a fit of desperation.
Head Constable Jaipal Singh, Constable Surendra Kumar and Constable Budha Saini were on duty.
Showing great courage, they took the help of a fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire in a BTPN wagon full of highly inflammable material (Naphtha) with utmost care, without caring for his own life.
Had the fire not been doused immediately, it would have spread to a total of 18 BTPN wagons carrying highly inflammable material (Naphtha), causing a major accident, threatening thousands of lives and causing damage to railway property worth billions of rupees.
Jaipal Singh, Surendra Kumar and Budhram Saini risked their lives to save nearly 1000 lives and railway property worth billions.
Jeevan Raksha Padak awards
Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to an individual for a meritorious act in saving the life of a person.
The award is given in three categories namely Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak.
Anyone is eligible for these awards. This award can also be given posthumously.
6. England's Ben Stokes and Nat Sciver win ICC annual awards

England Test captain Ben Stokes and all-rounder Nat Sciver have won ICC cricketer of the year 2022 awards.

All-rounder Stokes was named the Men's Test Cricketer of the Year, while Sciver won the Rachael Hayhoe Flint Trophy for the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year.
Sciver, 30, is also named Women's one-day international (ODI) Cricketer of the Year.
The 31-year-old Stokes took over the Test captaincy from Joe Root in April 2022 and has won nine of his 10 Tests in charge.
Stokes previously won the overall Men's Cricketer of the Year award in 2019.
Babar Azam has been given the Men's ODI Player of the Year award (Sobers Trophy), before Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi won the award for 2021.

7. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh felicitates 25 winners of Veer Gatha 2.0

Veer Gatha project
The 'Veer Gatha Project' has been launched by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for students of grades 3-12.
The aim of the project is to commemorate the courage of the armed force officers and personnel.
It aims to honour the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the Armed Forces, other legally constituted forces and officers.
Veer Gatha 2.0 is the second edition of Project Veer Gatha.
Last year, Veer Gatha Edition-1, which was launched jointly by the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, was a huge success.
8. President Murmu approves 412 Gallantry Awards to Armed Forces personnel
President Droupadi Murmu on 25 January approved 412 Gallantry awards, including six Kirti Chakras and 15 Shaurya Chakras for Armed Forces personnel and others on the eve of the 74th Republic Day.

These include six Kirti Chakras, including four posthumous, and 15 Shaurya Chakras including two posthumous.
These include one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 92 Sena Medals, including four posthumous, one Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry), seven Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 29 Param Vishisht Seva Medals.
The Kirti Chakra is India's second highest gallantry award after the Ashoka Chakra. The Shaurya Chakra is the country's third highest gallantry award.
The President has also awarded the President's Tatrakshak Medal to Indian Coast Guard personnel for conspicuous gallantry, exceptional devotion to duty and distinguished service.

The Centre has announced the Padma Awards on the eve of Republic Day 26 January.
An overview of the news
Of the total 106 Padma Awards announced, six are Padma Vibhushan, nine are Padma Bhushan and 91 are Padma Shri.
Nineteen of the awardees are women.
Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) pioneer Dilip Mahalanobis will be posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan in the field of medicine (paediatrics).
He pioneered the widespread use of ORS, which is believed to have saved more than five crore lives globally.
Former Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will be posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan in the public sector.
Tabla player Zakir Hussain will also be awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
Those who will be awarded the Padma Bhushan include Kannada novelist and screenwriter S L Bhairappa, industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and author and philanthropist Sudha Murthy.
The prominent names among Padma Shri awardees include stockbroker Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Rasna founder Areez Khabatta, former union minister and Manipur BJP president Thounaojam Chaoba Singh, former Tripura minister and Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura president Narendra Chandra Debbarma, RRR music composer M M Keeravani.

10. Suryakumar Yadav named ICC "T20 Cricketer of the Year"

Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav has been selected as the ICC T20 Cricketer of the Year for the year 2022 for his stellar performance.

Suryakumar Yadav beat Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikander Raza, Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan, England all-rounder Sam Curran to win the award.
Suryakumar Yadav scored 1164 runs in 31 T20 matches played in 2022 and also became only the second batsman in T20 history to score more than 1000 runs in a calendar year.
Yadav hit 68 sixes in 2022, the most by any batsman in a single year in the history of the format.
In the Women's Section
Australia's Tahlia McGrath has been awarded the ICC T20 Women's Cricketer of the Year award.
McGrath left behind India's Smriti Mandhana, New Zealand's Sophie Devine and Pakistan's Nida Dar for the award.
Tahlia McGrath scored 435 runs and 13 wickets in 16 T20 matches in 2022.
