Important facts

  • It is an opportunity for people around the world to unite in the fight against HIV, support people living with HIV, and remember those who have died from AIDS-related illness.

  • AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is caused by the human immuno deficiency virus (HIV), has so far claimed the lives of 40.1 million people.

  • At the end of 2021, there were 38.4 million HIV-positive persons worldwide, of whom 25.6 million were from the African region.

  • HIV remains a serious public health concern affecting millions of people globally.

The theme of the 2022 World AIDS Day

  • "Equalize" is this year's World AIDS Day theme. 

  • It's a rallying cry to get serious about addressing disparities and doing everything we can to end AIDS.

  • Therefore, it is important to increase patient access to HIV treatment, testing, and prevention services by improving the availability, quality, and usability.

Background of the day

  • The day was first observed in 1988 by WHO. 

  • The day was conceived by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two information officers for the Global Program on AIDS.

  • These officers worked for the World Health Organization in the Global Program on AIDS.

  • James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter took their proposal for a World AIDS Day to Jonathan Mann, director of the Global Program on AIDS, who liked the idea and recommended starting the first World AIDS Day on December 1, 1988.

International Jaguar Day is observed every year on 29 November worldwide to raise awareness about the increasing threats facing the jaguar and the critical conservation efforts ensuring its survival from Mexico to Argentina. 

Important facts

  • The day is celebrated as a symbol of biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and the centuries-old cultural heritage of Central and South America.

  • International Jaguar Day was celebrated on 29 November by the National Zoological Park, New Delhi (Delhi Zoo) in India.

  • Jaguar is the third largest Cat Predator in the World and an important species of the Amazon Rainforest.

  • It is the largest wild cat in America.

  • The day aims to draw attention to the need to conserve jaguar corridors and their habitats as part of efforts to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Background of the day

  • In March 2018 representatives from 14 range countries gathered in New York at United Nations’ Headquarters for the Jaguar 2030 Forum. 

  • The Forum resulted in the Jaguar 2030 Statement, which outlined a wide range of internationally collaborative jaguar conservation initiatives.

  • Several countries, including Brazil, are also celebrating National Jaguar Day, which has recognized the jaguar as a symbol of biodiversity.

  • Among those seeking to celebrate Jaguar Day were Dr. Alan Rabinowitz, co-founder and former CEO and chief scientist of Panthera, a global wild cat conservation organisation.

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2022

The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2022 concluded on November 25, with the Muscat Ministerial Manifesto on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

Important facts

  • The two-day summit, which began on November 24 in Oman's capital Muscat, follows two high-level summits held in the Netherlands in 2014 and 2019.

  • The theme of the meeting was - The AMR Pandemic: From Policy to One Health Action.

  • The Manifesto has been endorsed by 34 of the 45 countries that participated at the conference. 

Muscat Ministerial Manifesto on AMR - three global targets

  • Reduce the total amount of antimicrobials used in the agri-food system at least by 30-50% by 2030 from the current level.

  • Zero use of Critically important antimicrobials (CIA).

  • Ensuring that 'access' group antibiotics (a class of antibiotics that are cheaper, safer and have a lower AMR risk) represent at least 60 per cent of total antibiotic consumption in humans by 2030.

About World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 

  • It is a global campaign observed annually to improve awareness and understanding related to AMR.

  • It encourages best practices among the public, health stakeholders and policy makers to reduce the emergence and spread of AMR.

What is Antimicrobial Resistance?

  • It is the resistance acquired by any microorganism (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, etc.) against antimicrobial drugs (such as antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, antimalarials, and anthelmintics) that are used to treat infections.

  • As a result, standard treatments become ineffective, the infection persists and can spread to others.

National Cadet Corps celebrates 74th foundation day

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is celebrating the 74th anniversary of its Raising Day on 27 November 2022. The NCC raising day is also being celebrated all over the country with cadets participating in marches, blood donation camps and social development programmes. It is the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world. 

NCC Raising Day

NCC Day is observed on the fourth Sunday of November. The NCC was raised on 15th July 1948 in New Delhi, which was the fourth Sunday of the November month in 1948.For this reason the NCC raising Day is observed every year on the fourth Sunday of the November Month.

Formation of the NCC

After Independence the NCC in India was formed under the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948 and was raised on 15 July 1948.

The NCC is a voluntary military cadet corps under the Union Ministry of Defence and is open to school and college students.

It was set up to create a human resource of organized, trained and motivate youth to provide leadership in all walks of life and always available for the service of the nation

The motto of NCC is: “UNITY AND DISCIPLINE”.

Colonel (later retired as Chief of Army Staff) Gopal Gurunath Bewoor was the first Director of the NCC. He took over as Director of NCC on 31 Mar 1948.

5. National Milk Day

National Milk Day

National Milk Day is celebrated every year on 26 November to raise awareness about the importance of milk and its benefits.

Important facts

  • This day is the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is called the father of White Revolution.

  • 2022 is the 101st birth anniversary of the “Milkman of India”, Dr. Verghese Kurien. 

  • India is the largest producer of milk. Milk is such a food item that not only humans but animals also take it as food.

  • India contributes 23 per cent of global milk production. 

  • Milk production in India increased from 17 MT in 1950-51 to 209.96 MT in 2020-21. 

  • World Milk Day is also celebrated every year on June 1, which was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization.

  • The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying is observing this year's “National Milk Day” as a part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” on 26th November 2022 in the silicon city of India, Bengaluru.

Background of the day

  • The day was initiated by the Indian Dairy Association (IDA) in 2014.

  • In the year 1970, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) started a rural development program called Operation Flood.

  • This program was considered one of the largest and aimed to develop a milk grid throughout the country. 

  • This made India the largest producer of milk and milk products. Later it came to be known as the White Revolution.

  • White Revolution or Operation Flood focused on the objective of increasing the production of milk and augmenting the income of rural households.

Constitution Day or National Law Day is celebrated in India every year on 26 November as it marks the day when the Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.

Important facts

  • On 19 November 2015, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment notified the decision of the Government of India to celebrate 26 November as 'Constitution Day'.

  • The day was declared in the year which marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. 

  • In early 1948, Dr. Ambedkar completed the draft of the Indian Constitution and presented it to the Constituent Assembly.

  • This draft was adopted on November 26, 1949.

  • The Indian Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.

  • It took 2 years 11 months and 18 days to make the constitution.

  • Originally the Constitution of India was written in English and Hindi.

Every year, November 25 is seen as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. 

Important facts

  • The main purpose of organizing this day is to prevent violence against women and to make women aware of their basic human rights and gender equality.

  • This day is organised by women's rights activists every year since 1981 on 25 November to fight against gender-based violence.

  • The theme for this year is ‘UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls.

  • The principle of gender equality in India is enshrined in the Indian Constitution, with women having the fundamental right not to be discriminated against on grounds of sex (Article 15) and equal protection before the law (Article 14).

Background of the day

  • On February 7, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating November 25 as the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women'.

  • The day is organised in honour of the 'Mirabai sisters' (three political activists of the Dominican Republic) who were brutally executed in the year 1960 on the orders of the country's ruler 'Rafael Trujillo'.

  • In September 1990, the Parliament passed the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act. 

  • This act made provision for the establishment of a Broadcasting Corporation of India named Prasar Bharati.

Every year 20 November is observed as the world children day to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and to improve children's welfare.

However in India  National Children's Day  is observed on 14 November to mark the birthday of the first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

 Background to the day 

World Children’s Day was first observed in 1954 as Universal Children's Day. This day has a special significance as on 20th November 1959 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child

Also on this day in 1989 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Child Rights Week 

Child rights week is celebrated across India from November 14-20, starting from National Children’s Day to World Children’s Day.

To mark the occasion UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) has started a campaign ‘goblue’

Under this campaign many  iconic buildings, including the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament building, State Legislative Assembly buildings and iconic historical monuments across India have been  illuminated in blue light on 19 and 20 November for World Children’s Day to convey solidarity on the issue of child rights.

UNICEF said that Dhar village in Madhya Pradesh, and thousands of  village streets in Sarguja, Bastar region and in the central region will go blue in solidarity with child rights.

Regional Ambassador for UNICEF South Asia Sachin Tendulkar, and UNICEF Celebrity Advocate Bollywood actor Ayushman Khurrana also participated at a symbolic futsal match with children.

UNICEF is a United Nations agency which was set up on 11 December 1946 as United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. It was renamed as the United Nations Children's Fund in 1953. 

It provides development and humanitarian assistance to children and mothers.

  • National integration refers to a situation in which people bind themselves as a whole by discarding all distinctions.

About Indira Gandhi

  • Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad to Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.

  • In 1942, she married Feroze Gandhi, who was a freedom fighter, politician and journalist.

  • In 1955, she became a Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and was elected as the President of CWC in 1959.

  • As Information Minister, Indira Gandhi joined Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet.

  • In 1966, she became the first woman Prime Minister of India after the sudden death of Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent, Russia.

  • She was a great politician and played an important role in strengthening the Indian democratic structure and tradition.

  • Indira Gandhi was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1971.
