1. Pune’s NFAI to restore Satyajit Ray’s Film Pratidwandi

On the occasion of legendary film director Satyajit Ray’s birth centenary year, Pune based National Film Archive of India (NFAI) has started the process of restoring Ray’s films as part of National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM).
- “Pratidwandi” film is based on Sunil Gandopadhyay’s novel of the same name,
- It is the first of his films to be taken up for restoration.
- It is the first film in the Calcutta trilogy,the other being , Seemabaddha , and Jana Aranya.
- The films were made in Bengali.
Satyajit Ray received an Honorary Academy Award(Oscar award) in 1992.

- trace, acquire and preserve for posterity the heritage of Indian cinema;
- to classify, document data and undertake research relating to films;

National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM)
The NFHM was started in 2017 by the I&B Ministry with a mandate to collect, assess, and preserve film reels as well as non-film materials associated with cinema, such as posters, flyers, or booklets, which have historical and aesthetic value.
- National Film Archive of India (NFAI) is the nodal organization for the implementation of this project.
2. Census first phase, National Population Register(NPR) data collection deferred till Sept 2022

- The first phase of Census 2021 — the House listing and Housing Census along with updating the NPR — was scheduled to be held between April and September 2020, whereas the second and main phase of population enumeration was scheduled to be concluded by March 5, 2021
- The decennial exercise was postponed multiple times due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
- The Registrar General of India (RGI) had informed the States that the deadline for finalization of administrative boundaries is extended till 30th June 2022.
- Finaliztion of administrative boundaries, at least three months prior to the exercise, is a prerequisite for conducting the census.
- The preparation of this unambiguous list of administrative units is termed as “Census Frame” which covers the entire area but without omission or duplication of any administrative unit at any level.
- For Census 2021, all the changes between January 1, 2010, i.e. after the date of finalization of boundaries for Census 2011 up to the date of finalization of boundaries for forthcoming exercise (presently up to June 30, 2022) are to be considered for preparing the Census Frame.

3. PM Modi releases the 10th Installment of PM KISAN

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released the ₹20,900 crore to more than 10.09 crore farmers as the 10th instalment of financial benefit under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme on 1st January, 2022 via video conferencing.
- Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PMKISAN) scheme, a financial benefit of ₹6,000 a year is provided to the eligible farmer families, payable in three equal instalments of ₹2,000.
- The money is transferred directly to the bank account of the beneficiaries.
- During the virtual event, the Prime Minister also released an equity grant of more than ₹14 crore to about 351 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), benefiting 1.24 lakh farmers.
- The PM-KISAN scheme was announced in the February 2019 Budget and the total amount provided under the scheme has touched about ₹1.8 lakh crore.

4. PM laid foundation of Major Dhyan Chand sports University in Meerut

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on 2nd January 2022, to inculcate sporting culture and establish world-class sporting infrastructure in the country.
- The Sports University will be established at Salawa and Kaili villages of Sardhana town at an estimated cost of about 700 Crore rupees.
- The Sports University will be equipped with modern and state-of-the-art sports infrastructure including synthetic Hockey ground, Football ground, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Kabaddi ground, Lawn tennis court, Gymnasium hall, Synthetic running stadium, Swimming pool, Multipurpose hall, Cycling Velodrome etc.

5. “Padhe Bharat”, 100 days reading campaign by Ministry of Education

- Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched a 100 days reading campaign 'Padhe Bharat' on 1st January 2022.
- Padhe Bharat campaign will focus on children studying in Balvatika to Grade 8.The reading campaign will be organised for 100 days (14 weeks) starting from 1st January 2022 to 10th April 2022.
- The 100 days reading campaign will also focus on Indian languages including mother tongue/local/regional languages.
- It is in this regard, 21st February which is celebrated as International Mother Tongue Day, has also been integrated with this campaign. This day will be celebrated with the activity of KahaniPadhoApniBhasa Main (Reading story in own language) across the country by encouraging children to read in their mother tongue/local language.
6. India gift Covaxin to Afghanistan

- India has gifted 5 lakh Bharat Biotech-made Covaxin corona vaccines to Afghanistan. This is part of the 10 lakh vaccine to be gifted by the Government of India to Afghanistan .
- The consignment was sent to Afghanistan by the Iranian Mahan Airlines.
- The consignment will be handed over to the UN official in the Indira Gandhi Children hospital in Kabul .
- India earlier sent vaccines to Afghanistan in February 2021 when Ashraf Ghani was in power in Afghanistan.
- This is the first time India has sent vaccines to Afghanistan after the Taliban captured power in August 2021 and the Government of India does not recognise the Taliban government in Kabul.

7. Nearly 6000 NGO loses FCRA Licence

- Registration of 5,933 NGOs under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) 2010 lapsed on December 31, 2021, either for failure to apply for renewal before the due date or the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) rejecting their applications.
- The remaining, which had applied for renewal, were refused, as MHA found their operations or accounts to be in violation of FCRA..
- Oxfam India Trust, Jamia Millia Islamia and Indian Medical Association (IMA) are among these organisations.
- Oxfam was found to have transferred over ₹4 crore to 140 small NGOs and educational institutions before September 2020.
- The amendments to the FCRA brought in September 2020 bar NGOs from transferring foreign funds to other domestic NGOs.
- The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is the administrator of the FCRA 2010 act in India.
8. China renames 15 Places in Arunachal Pradesh

- China has renamed 15 places in Arunachal Pradesh to reaffirm its claim on the state.
- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs announced that it had standardised in Chinese characters, Tibetan and Roman alphabet the names of 15 places in Zangnan, the Chinese name for Arunachal Pradesh.
- China claims 90,000 sq. km of areas in Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory and calls it Zangnam or South Tibet.
- The Government of India has rejected the Chinese claim.
9. Tragedy at the Vaisno Devi as stampede kills many

- Twelve pilgrims have died and over a dozen injured in a stampede at Jammu and Kashmir's Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The stampede was triggered by a "minor altercation among some young boys" amid a massive rush of devotees on New Year.
- The incident occurred outside the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine on Trikuta hills.
- Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered a high level inquiry into the stampede.
- An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each has been approved by the Prime Minister of India from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to the stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan and the injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
10. NITI Aayog Organizes National Workshop on Bamboo Development Mission

- NITI Aayog organized a national-level workshop on bamboo development on 30th December 2021
- The workshop was conducted both online and offline.
- Through the workshop, participants were taught about all components of the bamboo value chain—plantation, production, processing, standardization, and utilization—in order to develop strategies and a roadmap for the development of a circular economy in the sector.
- The workshop also discussed national and international best practices
- Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh characterized bamboo as ‘green gold’, recognizing its crucial role in uplifting the Indian economy in the post-Covid scenario.
- Bamboo can be used for making bio-ethanol, which would reduce dependence on imported fossil fuel.
- Bamboo is also very beneficial for the construction sector.
- Niti Aayog also talked about setting up BIS standards of bamboo and FSSAI certification of bamboo products, linking Kisan Rail to bamboo, GI tagging of bamboo products, and the development of a nationwide knowledge information system on bamboo.
