1. Jharkhand’s St. Patrick’s School win 61st Subroto Cup Girls U-17 title 2022

St. Patrick’s, Gumla, Jharkhand won the 61st Subroto Cup International Football Tournament Girls U-17 title 2022  beating Wangoi Higher Secondary School, Imphal, Manipur 3 – 1 in the final played at the  Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi.

This year a team from Bangladesh took part in the Subroto cup.

The 61st Subroto Cup now moves on to the Boys U-17 tournament which begins on October 3rd with the final scheduled for October 13th.

Subroto cup 

It is a prestigious international inter-school football tournament held annually in New Delhi. 

It is named after the former  Indian Air force Chief Subroto Mukherjee.

The  tournament is organised by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society with the Indian Air Force,

2. PM Modi inaugurates 36th National Games in Ahmedabad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 36th National Games at a glittering ceremony held at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad , Gujarat on 29 September 2022.

Union minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur,Olympians PV Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra and Ravi Kumar Dahiya were also present at the opening ceremony.

The 35th National Games  was held in Kerala in 2015. The National Games will be held in Gujarat for the first time. It will be held from  29 September to 12 October 2022.

3. Assamese swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika becomes the first from North East to cross North Channel

Popular Assamese swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika became the first swimmer from Northeast India to cross the North Channel.


IMPORTANT FACTS 

  • Elvis Ali Hazarika has also become the oldest swimmer in India to swim across the North Channel.
  • It took Elvis and his team 14 hours and 38 minutes to achieve the feat.

  • Hazarika, earlier this year, became the first person from North East India to cover the Indo Arabian Gateway Mumbai circle with his relay team.

  • In November 2021, he became the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway Of India, Arabian Sea, the total length of which is around 38 kilometres.

  • In 2019 itself, he became the first person from Assam to cross the Catalina Channel in the United States.

What is the North Channel ?

  • The North Channel is the strait between north-eastern Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland.

  • It begins north of the Isle of Man, where the Irish Sea ends and runs north-west into the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The width of the Northern Channel is 21 km, at its narrowest point located between Tor Head in Northern Ireland and the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland.

4. Bangladesh win SAFF Women's Football Championship for the first time

Bangladesh registered a historic title win for the first time by defeating Nepal 3-1 in the final of the SAFF(South Asian Football Federation) Women's Football Championship at Rangshala Stadium in Kathmandu on 19 September.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • In the tournament, Bangladesh captain Sabina Khatun scored the most goals in five matches with eight goals.
  • She was adjudged the best player of the tournament for her outstanding performance. The Bangladesh team was also given the Fair Play Award.

  • Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupana Chakma was named the best goalkeeper. In the tournament, she blocked most of the goals scored against Bangladesh and allowed only one goal.

  • 5-time champion India failed to play in the final of the sixth edition.

  • Nepal knocked out India in the semifinals.

SAFF Women's football Championship :

  • Currently the member countries of SAFF are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

  • It is held every two years.

  • India has won the first 5 editions so far, beating Nepal four times and Bangladesh once in the final.

  • SAFF was founded in 2010.

5. SAFF U-17 Championship : India win title, defeat Nepal in final

India clinched the SAFF U-17 Championship title by defeating Nepal 4-0 in the final at the RaceCourse International Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka on September 14, 2022.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Bobby Singh, Korou Singh, captain Vanlalpeka Guite and Aman scored a goal each to register a resounding victory for India's side.
  • In the group league, Nepal defeated India by 3-1. 

  • India captain Vanlalpeka Guite was adjudged the Player of the Tournament, while goalkeeper Sahil won the best goalkeeper award.

SAFF U-17 Championship :

  • It is an annual international football competition contested by the national teams of the members of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).

  • The first edition of the tournament took place in August 2011 in Nepal.

6. Cabinet approves signing of guarantees for hosting the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The Union Cabinet on 14 September 2022 approved the signing of guarantees for hosting the FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) Under-17 Women’s Football World Cup 2022 in India.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The World Cup will take place from 11th to 30th October 2022, in Bhubaneshwar, Navi Mumbai and Goa.
  • This seventh edition of the biennial youth tournament will be the first FIFA women's competition to be hosted by India.

  • In 2017, India hosted the FIFA U-17 Men's Football World Cup.

Financial Inclusion :

  • All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been sanctioned a financial outlay of Rs 10 crore for the maintenance of the playground, spectator capacity in the stadium, energy and cable laying and branding of the ground and training venue, etc.

Objectives :

  • Increasing the representation of women in football leadership and decision-making

  • Motivating more and more girls to play football in India

  • Advocating gender-inclusive participation by generalizing the concept of equal play from a young age

FIFA Tournament :

  • Organized by FIFA, the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup is the world championship for female players aged 17 or below 17.

  • The event started in 2008. 

  • The sixth edition of the event was held in Uruguay from 13 November to 1 December 2018.

  • Spain is the current champion of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

  • FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2022 will be the 7th edition of the tournament in which 16 teams including India will participate.

7. Vinesh Phogat wins bronze in World Wrestling Championships in Serbia

India’s Vinesh Phogat won the bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category at the World Wrestling Championships- 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia on 14 September.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Commonwealth Games - 2022 gold medalist Phogat defeated defending European champion Emma Malmgren of Sweden.
  • Vinesh, a three-time gold medalist in the qualification round, made a stunning comeback to beat Swedish rival Malmgren 8-0 in the bronze medal round.

  • Vinesh had made it to the bronze play-off via the repechage round after losing to Mongolia's Khulan Bakhuyag in their opening match on 13 September.

  • This is her second bronze medal at the Championships.

  • She had earlier earned a podium spot in the 2019 edition of the tournament in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 23 runs in the Asia Cup final on 11 September.

  • Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and decided to bowl first. Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 170 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs.

  • In reply, Pakistan's team was all out for 147 runs in 20 overs, for Pakistan, Mohammad Rizwan scored 55 runs in 49 balls.

10. Stuart Broad surpasses Glenn McGrath to become second highest wicket-taker among pacers in Tests

England pace veteran Stuart Broad on 11 September went past Australian great Glenn McGrath to become the second-most successful pacer in history of Test cricket.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • He achieved this feat during the third and final Test against South Africa playing for England at The Oval.
  • Broad took his 564th Test wicket by dismissing South African captain Dean Elgar lbw for 36.

  • After taking this wicket, Broad has become the second most successful fast bowler in Tests, with his compatriot James Anderson taking the first spot with 666 wickets in this format.

  • Broad has now 565 wickets in 159 Tests at an average of 27.81 and economy rate of 2.94. His best bowling figures in an innings are 8/15.

  • Broad became the fifth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket behind Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708), James Anderson (666), and Anil Kumble (619).
