2. President Ram Nath Kovind confers one Kirti Chakra and 14 Shaurya Chakras

President Ram Nath Kovind presented one Kirti Chakra and 14 Shaurya Chakras during the Defence Investiture Ceremony (Phase-II) at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on May 31.

• Gallantry Awards were given to Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces and Police Personnel for conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and utmost devotion to duty.

• He also presented 13 Param Vishisht Seva Medals and 29 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals for eminent service of exceptional order.

• Jammu - Kashmir Police constable Altaf Hussain Bhat was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.

• Bhat displayed gallantry of the highest order, utmost commitment to duty and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation while killing a terrorist at Ganderbal.

Renowned author Geetanjali Shree has been awarded the prestigious International Booker Prize 2022 for her novel 'Tomb of Sand'.

• Geetanjali has become the first Indian author to win the Sri International Booker Prize.

• 'Tomb of Sand' has become the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize.

• This book was originally published in Hindi language as 'Ret Samadhi'. English translation of 'Tomb of Sand' by American translator Daisy Rockwell.

• The book "Tomb of Sand" is published in the UK by Tilted Axis Press.

• Who is Geetanjali Shree

• Geetanjali Shree is originally from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. Gitanjali Shree has written three novels and several collections of stories.

• Among his other major novels are Purohit, Hamara Shahar Us Baras, Empty Space, Anugoonj etc.

• Synopsis of the novel 'Tomb of Sand'

• The novel tells the story of an 80-year-old elderly widow who loses her husband after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.

• About International Booker Prize

• The International Booker Prize is awarded annually to a translation of a novel published in the UK or Ireland.

• The Booker Prize was established in 1969 by the Booker Mcconnell Company of England.

• Under this, the amount of 50 thousand pounds i.e. 44 lakh rupees received is divided between the translator and the writer.

• French novelist David Diop was awarded the 'International Booker Prize 2021'.

4. The Queen of Britain presented Ajay Piramal with an Honorary British Award

Ajay Gopikishan Piramal, chairman of the Piramal Group, has been awarded the Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen of Britain.

• Ajay Piramal has received this honour as India Co-Chair of the UK-India CEO Forum for the services rendered towards UK-India business relations.

• He has worked tirelessly to further strengthen the people-to-people ties between the two countries through his investments in the UK life sciences ecosystem.

• As co-chair of the UK-India CEOs Forum, he has also contributed to the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting in London in 2019, the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in 2018 and the UK Prime Minister's visit to India in 2016.

• Piramal has also helped in finalising the policy on labour mobility, setting up a fast-track mechanism for Indian investments in the UK and issues related to corporate tax in India.

• About the Order of the British Empire (CBE) honour -

• This honour is given for work in the field of social service, with arts, science, charitable or voluntary organisations.

• It was started by King George V on 4 June 1917.

• It is presented by the Queen of Britain.

5. Anna Kabale Duba won the Global Nursing Award 2022

Kenya's Anna Kabale Duba was honoured with the Aster Guardian Global Nursing Award 2022 at an award ceremony held in Dubai.

• Out of 24,000 nurses, 10 were selected as the top 10 finalists, of whom Anna Kabale Duba won the award.

• What did She do under the Qabale Duba Foundation?

• A school has been built by him in his village under the Qabale Duba Foundation.

• This school was built so that children can study in the morning and adults can read in the afternoon.

• More than 100 adults and 150 children are participating in this community literacy programme.

• Who is Anna Kabale Duba ?

• She is the first graduate of her village. She also won the title of Miss Tourism Kenya 2013 while studying Nursing.

• She has advocated for education and gender equality in her community.

• Global Nursing Awards -

• The award was launched on 12th May 2021, International Nurses Day.

• The Aster Guardian Global Nursing Award was instituted by Aster DM Healthcare with an aim to recognize the phenomenal contribution of nurses to humanity.

• The winner of this award receives a prize money of $250,000.

6. Mamata Banerjee awarded the 'Bangla Akademi Award' for her "tireless literary pursuit"

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was awarded the 'Bangla Akademi Award' for her "tireless literary pursuit".

• The award was presented to Banerjee for her book "Kabita Bitan", which pays tribute to the best writers of West Bengal.

• This book is a collection of 946 poems written by Mamta Banerjee.

• Banerjee was given this award at the "Ravi Pranam" function organised by the Information and Culture Department of the government on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

• Mamata Banerjee herself did not accept the award and received it on her behalf by state education minister Bratya Basu.

• Bangla Akademi has decided to reward those who work tirelessly for the betterment of literature as well as other sectors of the society from this year itself.

7. Royal Gold Medal awarded to architect Balkrishna Doshi

Famous architect Balkrishna Doshi was conferred the prestigious Royal Gold Medal 2022, one of the world’s highest honours for architecture.

• The Gold Medal was presented by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

• Doshi is the only Indian to have been awarded both the Royal Gold Medal and the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture.

• He is credited with designing some of the most iconic structures in Ahmedabad.

• Some of his major projects include Shreyas Comprehensive School Campus, Ahmedabad, Atira Guest House, Ahmedabad, The Institute of Indology, Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad School of Architecture, Tagore Hall and Memorial Theatre, Ahmedabad, Premabhai Hall, Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, Kanoria Centre.

• In 2020, he was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, for his contribution to the field of architecture.

• He is also the recipient of the French ‘Global Award for Lifetime Achievement for Sustainable Architecture' by the Institut Francais d’architecture, Paris.

• About Royal Gold Medal

• The Royal Gold Medal for architecture is awarded annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects on behalf of the British monarch for contribution to international architecture. 

• The medal was first awarded in 1848 to Charles Robert Cockerell.

9. NASA Climate Research Scientist Cynthia Rosenzweig Wins World Food Prize 2022

Recently the World Food Prize Foundation announced the name of Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig from the United States of America as the winner of the World Food Prize 2022.

• Rosenzweig was awarded this prize for his research 'Understanding the relationship between climate and food systems and how both will change and forecast in the future'.

• The purpose of the World Food Prize is to recognize the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.

• In the year 2021, the award was won by Dr. Shakuntala Harak Singh Thilstad, a leading nutritionist and in the year 2020, the award was won by Dr. Ratan Lal, an Indian American soil scientist.

• About World Food Prize

• The World Food Prize Prize was conceived in 1970 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Norman E. Borlaug for his work in global agriculture.

• The World Food Prize was instituted in 1986.

• It is also known as the "Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture".

• Dr. M.S. Swaminathan who is known as the father of Green Revolution in India was the first person to receive this award in the year 1987.

• The award is presented each year in October on or around United Nations World Food Day (16 October).

• The prize winner is presented with a sculpture designed by renowned artist and designer, Saul Bass, in addition to a cash prize of US$ 250,000.

• The World Food Prize Foundation is located in Des Moines, USA.

10. Retired General Tej Kaul has been awarded the Nirmala Deshpande Memorial World Peace Prize

Retired General Tej Kaul has been awarded the Nirmala Deshpande Memorial World Peace Prize by the All India Creative Committee (ABRS).

• General Tej Kaul was given this honour for his various incomparable efforts and for establishing peace with neighbouring countries like Pakistan and humanitarian services done during the Corona period.

• General Kaul has also served in Army Headquarters as Assistant Military Secretary, Deputy Director General Military Intelligence and General Officer Commanding Gujarat and Goa Region.

• The name of General Kaul is recorded as the first officer to be released from Officers Training Academy, Chennai, who has received PVSM (Param Vishisht Seva Medal).

• He has also been honoured with Saraswati Puraskar for humanitarian and social services by the Government of Maharashtra.

• Who was Nirmala Deshpande?

• Nirmala Deshpande was a famous social worker associated with Gandhian ideology.

• Born- 19 December 1929 Nagpur, Maharashtra

• Died - 1 May 2008

• He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award and Padma Vibhushan in the year 2006.

• Nirmala Deshpande contributed by joining Vinoba Bhave's Bhoodan movement in 1952 and then with Mahatma Gandhi's message of 'Gram Swaraj', walked around 40,000 kilometres across the country.

• He played an important role in organising a peace mission in Kashmir in 1994 and India-Pakistan meet in 1996.
