1. Oscar 2022: Suriya's Tamil socio-drama 'Jai Bhim' nominated for Best Featured Film

Suriya's Tamil socio-drama Jai Bhim is India's entry into The Academy.

  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the list of 276 films that are eligible for consideration at the 94th Oscars, on 20th January 2022.
  • 'Jai Bhim', which has gained a nomination for best feature film, is in competition with other acclaimed flicks like 'Jockey,' 'Cruella,' 'Dune, 'Eternals,' 'Godzilla VS Kong,' 'King Richard,' among other movies.
  • Jai Bhim is the fourth Indian film to get nominated for Oscars after Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan.
  • Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s latest period drama Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham has also officially made it to the Oscars 2021 list. The film has been nominated for the Global Community Oscar Awards 2021.

2. FIFA AWARD 2021

The governing body of World Football FIFA held its 6th annual award function at, Its Headquarters Zurich, Switzerland. The annual award was started by FIFA in 2017 and it is always held on 17 January at Zurich.

This Year Awardee 

FIFA Player of the Year:

  • Male: Robert Lewandowski of Poland. He plays for German club Bayern Munich.
  • Female: Alexia Putellas of Spain. She plays for Spanish club Barcelona.

Special Best Men’s award

Cristiano Ronaldo, for being the top men’s international goal scorer of all time. He is from Portugal and plays for English football club Manchester United.

Best Goalkeeper of the Year   

  • Men : Edouard Mendy of Senegal. He plays for English football club Chelsea.
  • Female:  Christiane Endler of Chile. She also plays for French club Olympique Lyonnais.

FIFA Coach of the Year 

  • Men: Thomas Tuchel. He is the coach of English club Chelsea.
  • Female:  Emma Hayes. She is the coach of English Football club Chelsea.

Puskas Award 

It is given to the best goal scored by a player in a football match. This year it was given to:

Erik Lamela of Argentina for the goal he scored against Arsenal  playing for  English club Tottenham Hotspur.

5. Sahitya Akademi Award 2021

  • India's National Academy of Letters popularly known as “Sahitya Akademi” announced its awards for 2021.
  • The awards declared are Sahitya Akademi Main Award, Sahitya Academi Yuva Puraskar, and Bal Sahitya Puraskar.
  • It is a literary honor that is awarded annually since 1954 to writers of the most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the 22 languages enumerated in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India as well as English and Rajasthani.
  • The award comprises a plaque and a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000.
  • The plaque awarded by the Sahitya Akademi was designed by the Indian film-maker Satyajit Ray.

  • Namita Gokhale won the award for the English novel “Things to Leave Behind”
  • In 2021 seven books of poetry, five short stories, one each of biography, autobiography, criticism, and epic poetry, and two plays had won the awards

  • RedInk Awards for Lifetime Achievement has been bestowed on senior journalist and author Prem Shankar Jha, 83, for his long and distinguished career of incisive and analytical writing.
  • Danish Siddiqui, who was Reuters’ Chief Photographer based in India, has been posthumously awarded the ‘Journalist of the Year – 2020’ for his spectrum of investigative and impactful news photography.
  • The RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism, instituted by the Mumbai Press Club, have special significance this year as they mark their 10th edition of peer recognition for excellent writing and good journalism.
  • Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana was the Chief Guest at the virtual event.

7. Zverev named Germany’s Sportsman of the Year

World’s No. 3, Alexander Zverev (24 years old tennis player) of Germany was awarded with the German’s Sportsman of the year at the 2021 German Athlete Awards.

  • He became the first tennis player, since 1991, to win the award.
  • The 75th edition of the awards was organized by the Internationale Sport-Korrespondenz (ISK), a sports journalist agency in Germany.
  • It was held  on 19th December 2021 at the prestigious Kurhaus Baden-Boden.

2. Bhutan Confers its highest civilian award on PM Modi

  1. King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has   conferred its highest civilian award “Order of the Druk Gyalpo” on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17th December 2021.
  2. This was announced on the occasion of Bhutan’s 114th National Day.
  3. In 2020, PM Modi was awarded with the Legion of Merit Award by the President of the United States along with the Prime Minister of Australia  Scott Morrison  and the former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.

9. Jnanpith Award for 2020 and 2021 announced

  • It is the highest literary award in India and is given annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an Indian author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature".
  • It is given to Indian writers writing in any of the   22 Indian languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
  • The 56th Jnanpith award 2020 was conferred to Assamese poet Nilmani Phookan. He has written Surya Henu Nami Ahe Ei Nodiyedi, Gulapi Jamur Lagna, and Kobita. 
  • The 57th Jnanpith award 2021 was conferred on Konkani novelist Damodar Mauzo. His famous works are Karmelin, and Tsunami Simon, and short stories, such as Teresa’s Man and Other Stories from Goa,Ganthon.
  •  The Jnanpith Award was instituted in 1961 and the first person to get the award was G. Shankar Kurup for his Malayalam poetry collection Odakkuzhal in 1965.
