1. Ramkumar Ramnathan win Bengaluru Tennis double’s title

Ramkumar Ramnathan won the third doubles title of the year when he and Saket Mayeni won the Bengaluru Open ATP Challenger tennis title at Bengaluru.

The Indian Tennis player defeated the French pair of Hugo Grenier and Alexandre Muller in straight sets .

Chun-hsin Tseng  of Chinese Taipei (also known as Taiwan ) defeated Croatian Borna Gojo  in straight sets.

2. Chelsea wins FIFA Club World Cup 2021

England football club Chelsea, won its first FIFA Club World Cup when it defeated Brazilian football  club Palmeiras 2-1  in the final held at  Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium  in Abu Dhabi ,United Arab Emirates  on 12 February 2022.

 It is an international club football championship where the continental  club champions participate every year.

The club champions of Asian AFC Championships League, African CAF Championships League, North American CONCACAF Championships League, South America Copa Libertadores, Oceanian OFC Champions League, European UEFA Champions League and the  club champion of the host team participates  in the tournament.

  • The first club world cup was held in 2000 at Brazil which was won by  Corinthians Paulista of Brazil.

  • Real Madrid football club of Spain has won the cup for the maximum 4 times.

  • The Spanish football clubs (Real Madrid 4 times and Barcelona 3 times ) have  won it a maximum of 7 times.

3. India defeat West Indies 3-0 to win ODI series

India has defeated the West Indian Cricket team to win the 3 match One Day International (ODI ) series 3-0. 

Due to Covid all the three matches were played at the Narendra Modi cricket stadium, Ahmedabad ,Gujarat . All the three matches were Day/Night matches.

 First ODI  was held on 6 February 2022. It was won by India by 6 wickets

 Man of the match :Yuzvendra Chahal of India 

Second ODI was held on 9 February  2022. It was won by India by 44 runs .

Man of the match : Prasidh Krishna 

Third ODI was held on 11 February 2022. It was won by India by 96 runs 

Man of the match : Shreyas Iyer 

Man of the Series : Prasidh Krishna 

Captain of Indian cricket Team : Rohit Sharma 

Captain of West Indian Cricket Team : Nicholas Pooran for the 2nd and third match

4. Senegal wins maiden Africa Cup of Nation 2021

Senegal defeated Egypt  in a penalty shoot-out to win its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 on 7 February 2022.

  •   The score in the final match was 0-0 even after extra time.  The result was decided by a penalty shoot out which was won by Senegal 4-2 .

  • The final was played in the Cameroon  capital . Yaounde’s  Olembé stadium.

  • The 31st Africa Cup of Nation football tournament was held in Cameroon from 9 January to 7 February 2022.

  • The Africa Cup of Nations football tournament is held every two years and  the first tournament was held in 1957 in Sudan.

  • Egypt has won the cup a maximum of 7 times .

  • It is located in Western Africa and is also called the “Gateway of Africa" .

5. India wins its 1000th International ODI cricket match

  • The Indian cricket team led by Rohit Sharma comfortably defeated the West Indian team by six wickets  to win its 1000th  international ODI (One Day International ) cricket match played at the  Narendra Modi stadium ,Ahmedabad on 7 February 2022.
  • India now lead the 3 match ODI series 1-0.
  • India also became the first cricket playing nation to play 1000 th ODI match in the world .

Fact files 

  • One Day International or limited overs cricket match was first played between England and Australia in 1971 in Melbourne, Australia.
  • India played its first ODI match  against England at Leeds in June 1974. Ajit Wadekar was the captain of the Indian side which lost the match.
  • India won its first ODI match against East Africa in 1975 at the first world cup 1975 played in England.
  • India has won two ODI world cups  , 1983 played in England  and 2011 ,hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh .
  • The 1983 team was captained by Kapil Dev and the 2011 team was captained by Mahender Singh Dhoni.

6. China won the AFC Women Asian Cup 9th time

The Chinese women's football team defeated the South Korean women's football team 3-2 in the Asian Football Confederations(AFC) women Asian cup  final held at the D.Y.Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai on  6 February 2022. This was the 9th  title win for the Chinese women's football team also known as “Steel Roses”.

  • Earlier the host Indian women football team was forced to withdraw from the tournament mid-way after several of their players tested covid positive .

  • Total 12 teams participated in the tournament  which was held from 20 January to 6 February 2022.

  • The tournament matches were  played in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune . 

  •  India was hosting the tournament for the second time after 1979.

  •  The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women Asian cup is held every four years.

7. India won the ICC-U19 World Cup 2022

India lifted a record fifth International Cricket Council Under -19 (ICC U19) World Cup title after defeating England by 4 wickets in the final at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, played on 5 February 2022..

  • The 14th Edition of the ICC U19 World Cup was held in the West Indies from 14 January to 5 February 2022 in a 50 -50 overs format. 16 countries participated in the tournament. 

  • The Indian team captained by Yash Dhull  became the fifth Indian captain after  Mohammad Kaif(2000), Virat Kohli(2008), Unmukt Chand(2012) and Prithvi Shaw(2018), to hold the winner’s trophy.

  • The captain of the England team is Tom Prest.

  • The coach of the Indian team is Hemant Kanitkar.

  • The player of the final was the India  all rounder ,Raj Angad  Bawa and The Player  of the series was  Dewald Brevis of South Africa . 

  • The first U19 World Cup was played in 1988 as McDonald's Bicentennial Youth World Cup, It was hosted by Australia and 8 teams competed in the event . It was won by Australia. 

  • The second world cup was held in South Africa in 1998, under the name of the ICC-U19 world cup. 16 teams participated in the event.

  • Since then the ICC U-19 world cup is held every two years with 16 teams.

8. Therese Johaug of Norway win the first gold medal of Beijing Winter Olympics

The first gold medal of the Beijing Olympics was won by Norwegian Therese Johaug in the 15-kilometer women skiathlon cross country race.

The silver medal was won by the Russian Natalya Nepryayeva and the Bronze medal was won by Teresa Stadlober of Austria.

9. Beijing the first city in the world to host both Winter and Summer Olympics

With the inauguration of the 24th Winter Olympics 2022 in Beijing by the Chinese President Xi Jingping on 4 February,Beijing became the only city in the world  to host Summer and Winter Olympics .

It hosted the 29th Summer Olympics 2008.

  • The  opening ceremony was held at the Beijing National Stadium also called the  Birds Nest which incidentally also  hosted the 2008 summer olympics .

  • The opening ceremony  was attended by 22 world leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin  and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

  • The Indian flag was carried by the lone Indian participant Arif Khan who will compete in the Slalom and Giant Slalom event .

  •  It is 24th Winter Olympics Games 

  • The 23rd game was  held  in Tokyo, Japan in 2018.

  • The 25 th Winter games will be held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2026.

10. Inaugural World Legends Cricket League won by World Giants

The inaugural World Legends League was organised for the retired cricketers of the world who were grouped in 3 teams. The Indian player played under the Indian Maharaja team and there were Asian Lions and World Giants teams.

  • Muhammad Kaif was the captain of Indian Maharaja team.
  • The matches were played in the T 20 format from 20 to 29 January 2022 at the Al Amerat Cricket stadium in Muscat, in Oman.
  • The final was played on 29 January 2022 and World Giants defeated Asain Lions by 25 runs 
  • Morne Morkel of World Giants was declared as the Player of the series and Corey Anderson of World Giants was declared the Man of the Match of the final.
