1. Mallakhamb competitions begin at National Games

Indian indigenous sport Mallakhamb began at the 36th National Games on 7 October. 

Important facts

  • Mallakhamb was introduced in the 2021 Khelo India University Games, where Madhya Pradesh won 12 medals including 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze.

  • It is one of the five new games to be played in the National Games this year.

What is mallakhamb?

  • Mallakhamb is a form of aerial yoga or gymnastics with vertical stable or hanging wooden poles performed by a gymnast.

  • Malkhamb is a form of ancient martial art, which was used as an aid to the training of wrestlers and warriors of the ancient era.

  • This ancient sport of India first caught the attention of the whole world during the Berlin 1936 Olympics.

  • Malkhamb Federation of India was established in 1981 and later the rules of the game were formalised.

  • Since then, the sport has spread all over the world and for the first time in the year 2019, the Malkhamb World Championships was held in Mumbai, in which more than 150 athletes from more than 15 countries participated.

2. PR Sreejesh, Savita Punia voted FIH Men's and Women's Goalkeeper of the Year

PR Sreejesh and Savita Punia have been voted FIH Men's and Women's Goalkeeper of the Year for the second year in a row.

Important facts

  • Indian women's hockey team captain Savita Punia and veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh won the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year title in both men's and women's categories based on their performances.

  • Savita is the third athlete to win the Goalkeeper of the Year (Female) for three consecutive years since the inception of the award in 2014.

  • In his 16th year as a full international for India, Sreejesh proved his mettle by appearing in all 16 games in the FIH Hockey Pro League in which India finished third.

  • He also participated in all six sports at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, when India won the silver medal.

  • Sreejesh got a total of 39.9 votes, followed by Belgium's Loik van Dooren (26.3 points) and Netherlands' Primin Bloc (23.2 points).

  • It was voted online by experts (40%), teams (20%), fans (20%), and media (20%).

  • Sreejesh is the third consecutive player to win the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year title.

  • Earlier, David Hurt (Ire) had won the award twice in 2015 and 2016, while Vincent Vanash (Belgium) won the award three times in a row from 2017 to 2019.

Kiren Rijiju and Anurag Singh Thakur launched Fit India Freedom Run 3.0 on Gandhi Jayanti at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium, New Delhi on 2 October.

  • The third edition of Fit India Freedom Run was launched jointly with the Fit India Plog run by Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur.

  • It will go on till 31st of October.

  • The first edition of 'Fit India Freedom Run' was held from August 15 to October 2, 2020.

  • Fit India Freedom Run 2.0 (second edition) was launched on 13th August 2021 from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi.

4. Road Safety World Series : Ojha’s century guides Sachin-led India Legends to second straight title win

In the Road Safety World Series T20 2022, Sachin Tendulkar-led India Legends team created history by defeating Sri Lanka Legends by 33 runs in Raipur on 1 September. The team won this title for the second time in a row.

Important facts

  • Electing to bat after winning the toss, India Legends team scored 195 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs with the help of wicketkeeper batsman Naman Ojha's century innings.

  • In reply, Sri Lanka Legends could only manage 162 runs in 18.5 overs.

  • Naman Ojha scored an unbeaten 108 off 71 balls with the help of 15 fours and 2 sixes.

  • Nama Ojha's innings earned him the title of 'Man of the Match'.

  • He scored the highest 266 runs in 6 matches at an average of 66.50 in 6 innings.

  • Shane Watson of Australia Legends was at number two, he scored 239 runs in 5 matches at an average of 47.80.

  • In the Road Safety World Series T20 2020-21 also, the final was played between the team of India Legends and Sri Lanka Legends.

  • The team led by Sachin Tendulkar scored 181 for 4 in 20 overs and won by 14 runs.

About Road Safety World Series

  • Road Safety World Series is a T20 cricket league, which features former international cricket players from various nations.

  • It is founded by the chief of Road Traffic Officer of Thane and the Konkan region, Ravi Gaikwad in collaboration with the BCCI.

  • This league is organized every year by the Road Safety World Series organization to raise awareness about road safety.

  • Players from India, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh participate in this series.

  • Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar is the commissioner of the series, while Sachin Tendulkar is the brand ambassador.

  • New Zealand Legends has been participating in this series since 2022.

5. Jharkhand’s St. Patrick’s School win 61st Subroto Cup Girls U-17 title 2022

St. Patrick’s, Gumla, Jharkhand won the 61st Subroto Cup International Football Tournament Girls U-17 title 2022  beating Wangoi Higher Secondary School, Imphal, Manipur 3 – 1 in the final played at the  Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi.

This year a team from Bangladesh took part in the Subroto cup.

The 61st Subroto Cup now moves on to the Boys U-17 tournament which begins on October 3rd with the final scheduled for October 13th.

It is a prestigious international inter-school football tournament held annually in New Delhi. 

It is named after the former  Indian Air force Chief Subroto Mukherjee.

6. PM Modi inaugurates 36th National Games in Ahmedabad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 36th National Games at a glittering ceremony held at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad , Gujarat on 29 September 2022.

Union minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur,Olympians PV Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra and Ravi Kumar Dahiya were also present at the opening ceremony.

The 35th National Games  was held in Kerala in 2015. The National Games will be held in Gujarat for the first time. It will be held from  29 September to 12 October 2022.

7. Assamese swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika becomes the first from North East to cross North Channel

Popular Assamese swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika became the first swimmer from Northeast India to cross the North Channel.


IMPORTANT FACTS 

  • Elvis Ali Hazarika has also become the oldest swimmer in India to swim across the North Channel.
  • It took Elvis and his team 14 hours and 38 minutes to achieve the feat.

  • Hazarika, earlier this year, became the first person from North East India to cover the Indo Arabian Gateway Mumbai circle with his relay team.

  • In November 2021, he became the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway Of India, Arabian Sea, the total length of which is around 38 kilometres.

  • In 2019 itself, he became the first person from Assam to cross the Catalina Channel in the United States.

What is the North Channel ?

  • The North Channel is the strait between north-eastern Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland.

  • It begins north of the Isle of Man, where the Irish Sea ends and runs north-west into the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The width of the Northern Channel is 21 km, at its narrowest point located between Tor Head in Northern Ireland and the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland.

8. Bangladesh win SAFF Women's Football Championship for the first time

Bangladesh registered a historic title win for the first time by defeating Nepal 3-1 in the final of the SAFF(South Asian Football Federation) Women's Football Championship at Rangshala Stadium in Kathmandu on 19 September.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • In the tournament, Bangladesh captain Sabina Khatun scored the most goals in five matches with eight goals.
  • She was adjudged the best player of the tournament for her outstanding performance. The Bangladesh team was also given the Fair Play Award.

  • Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupana Chakma was named the best goalkeeper. In the tournament, she blocked most of the goals scored against Bangladesh and allowed only one goal.

  • 5-time champion India failed to play in the final of the sixth edition.

  • Nepal knocked out India in the semifinals.

SAFF Women's football Championship :

  • Currently the member countries of SAFF are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

  • It is held every two years.

  • India has won the first 5 editions so far, beating Nepal four times and Bangladesh once in the final.

  • SAFF was founded in 2010.

India clinched the SAFF U-17 Championship title by defeating Nepal 4-0 in the final at the RaceCourse International Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka on September 14, 2022.

  • Bobby Singh, Korou Singh, captain Vanlalpeka Guite and Aman scored a goal each to register a resounding victory for India's side.
  • In the group league, Nepal defeated India by 3-1. 

  • India captain Vanlalpeka Guite was adjudged the Player of the Tournament, while goalkeeper Sahil won the best goalkeeper award.

  • It is an annual international football competition contested by the national teams of the members of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).

10. Cabinet approves signing of guarantees for hosting the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The Union Cabinet on 14 September 2022 approved the signing of guarantees for hosting the FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) Under-17 Women’s Football World Cup 2022 in India.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The World Cup will take place from 11th to 30th October 2022, in Bhubaneshwar, Navi Mumbai and Goa.
  • This seventh edition of the biennial youth tournament will be the first FIFA women's competition to be hosted by India.

  • In 2017, India hosted the FIFA U-17 Men's Football World Cup.

Financial Inclusion :

  • All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been sanctioned a financial outlay of Rs 10 crore for the maintenance of the playground, spectator capacity in the stadium, energy and cable laying and branding of the ground and training venue, etc.

Objectives :

  • Increasing the representation of women in football leadership and decision-making

  • Motivating more and more girls to play football in India

  • Advocating gender-inclusive participation by generalizing the concept of equal play from a young age

FIFA Tournament :

  • Organized by FIFA, the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup is the world championship for female players aged 17 or below 17.

  • The event started in 2008. 

  • The sixth edition of the event was held in Uruguay from 13 November to 1 December 2018.

  • Spain is the current champion of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

  • FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2022 will be the 7th edition of the tournament in which 16 teams including India will participate.
