Australia underlined its Ashes supremacy by crushing England’s hopes through a 4-0 series triumph.
The series was played at five venues across Australia from 8 December 2021 to 18 January 2022
Man of the Series: Travis Head of Australia.
The Australian team captain was Pat Cummins and the England team captain was Joe Root.
The Ashes is a 5 match Test cricket series played between England and Australia hosted in turn by the two nations.
The term ‘’Ashes’’ originated in a satirical obituary published in a British newspaper, “The Sporting Times”, immediately after Australia's 1882 victory at The Oval, its first Test win on English soil.
There have been 72 Ashes series: Australia have won 34, England have won 32 and six series have been drawn.

Virat Kohli resigned as the captain of the Indian cricket team on 15 January 2022.This comes after Indian cricket team failed to win a test series in South Africa and lost the current series 1-2 .India has never won a test series in South Africa.
- . The Delhi batsman, who took charge as the Test captain in 2014 after M.S. Dhoni stepped down, has been India’s most successful leader in the longest format with 40 wins in 68 matches.
- Earlier in December 2021, Kohli was replaced as the One Day International (ODI) and T 20 captain of the Indian cricket team.
- He is the 4th Most successful Test captain in the world after South African Greame Smith (53 win), Ricky Ponting of Australia (43 win),and Steve Waugh of Australia (41 wins ).
- Of his 40 wins, 16 came overseas, including series victories in Sri Lanka (2-1) in 2015, West Indies (2-0) in 2016, Sri Lanka (3-0) in 2017, Australia (2-1) in 2018-19 and West Indies (2-0) in 2019.
- He led India into the inaugural World Test Championship final which India lost to New Zealand in 2021.
3. South Africa wins the cricket Test Series 2-1

South Africa defeated the Indian cricket team in the 3rd and final test match and won the Freedom series 2-1. The Indian team has never won a test series in South Africa.
Dean Elgar was the captain of South Africa and Virat Kohli captained India in the first and the third Test. Vice-Captain K. L. Rahul led India in the second test match as Virat was not fit.

7. Tata Group replaces Vivo as the title sponsor of IPL 2022-23 editions

The Tata Group has replaced Vivo as the title sponsor for the Indian Premier League 2022 and 2023 editions.
- This decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after Vivo decided to pull out of its existing contract running till 2023

- The two new teams of Ahmedabad and Lucknow will participate for the first time in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League.

8. South African all rounder Chris Morris retires from all forms of cricket

- 34-year-old South Africa all rounder Chris Morris announced his retirement from all forms of cricket and declared that he is set to take up the new role of coaching the domestic team Titans.
- A right arm pacer and explosive batter, Morris made his Test debut in 2016 and featured in only four games in the traditional format, making 173 runs and taking 12 wickets. He also played 42 ODIs (48 wickets, 467 runs) and 23 T20 Internationals (34, 133).
- Morris played for Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings franchises in the IPL.
9. Court reinstated Djokovic visa

Tennis star Novak Djokovic won a court battle to stay in Australia to play in the Australian Open to be held from 17th Jan to 30th Jan 2022, despite being unvaccinated against COVID-19, but the government quickly threatened to cancel his visa a second time.
- Federal Circuit Court Judge Anthony Kelly reinstated Djokovic's visa, which was canceled after his arrival at the Melbourne Airport.
- The judge also ordered the government to release Djokovic within 30 minutes from the Melbourne quarantine hotel where he spent the last four nights.
- But government lawyer Christopher Tran told the judge after the decision that the minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Alex Hawke, "will consider whether to exercise a personal power of cancellation" of the visa.
- Government lawyers confirmed that another visa cancellation would mean Djokovic would be banned from Australia for three years.
10. 71st Junior National Basketball Championship

Punjab and Rajasthan emerged as the “girls” and “boys” champions respectively in the 71st Junior National Basketball Championship held at Indore in Madhya Pradesh.
- Rajasthan boys trounced Chandigarh 82-61, while Punjab withstood a spirited fightback from Rajasthan (57- 52) to win women’s title.
The 71st edition of Championship was hosted by Madhya Pradesh Basketball Association (MPBA) from 4th to 10th January 2022, under the aegis of Basketball Federation of India (BFI) to help in identifying potential basketball stars and providing them with the platform and opportunity to turn their inherent talent into a real-life profession.
- MBPA trains the kids to learn to be great basketball players with 360-degree development. It also trains the underprivileged children to give them equal chances as well.
