1. 22nd National Athletics Championship of Blinds commences in New Delhi

The 22nd National Athletics Championship for the Blind commenced at the Thyagaraj Stadium in New Delhi on 14 December 2022. The biennial championship is being organised by the Indian Blind Sports Association from 14-16 December 2022.

The event was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi.  She also launched the first book of the IBSA, Play the Dots. The first copy of the book was handed over to Arjuna Awardee and first Indian blind athlete to take part in the Rio Paralympics 2016, Ankur Dhama.

A total of 59 (31 for men, 28 for women) international and indigenous games will be organized at the State and Institution level under three categories – T11, T12, and T13.

A record number of 550 visually impaired athletes along with officials from different states including Tripura, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, UP, West Bengal, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, M.P, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh will take part in the championship.

Indian Blind Sports Association (IBSA) 

Indian Blind Sports Association (IBSA) was founded in 1986 to develop and promote sports for blind youngsters.

 It is the sole Indian Affiliate of the International Blind Sports Federation, the apex sports organization for blind sports in the world. It is also affiliated to the Paralympic Committee of India.

2. India win’s Women's FIH Nations Cup 2022: qualifies for the Pro League 2023-24

India win’s Women's FIH Nations Cup 2022

The Indian women Hockey team led by Captain Savita Punia beat Spain 1-0 in the final to win the inaugural FIH Nations Cup played at Valencia, Spain on 17 December 2022.  The winning goal was scored by Gurjit Kaur of India.

The inaugural FIH Nations cup was held in Valencia, Spain from 11-17 December 2022.

With this win the Indian team coached by Janneke Schopman- has qualified for the FIH Pro League 2023-24.

India and Spain had played in the FIH women’s Hockey Pro League 2021-22 season as replacement teams after pull-outs by Australia and New Zealand due to COVID-19 related issues.

India finished third in the 2021-22 FIH Pro League. The team did not qualify for the ongoing 2022-23 Pro League season.

 FIH Nations Cup 

Top 8 ranked teams which are not part of Women’s FIH Pro League were invited to play in the FIH nation’s cup. The winner of the Nation’s cup will be promoted to the 2023-24 season of the FIH Pro League.

World's top ranked 9 teams are invited to play in the FIH Pro League.

In the Nations Cup 8 teams were placed in two groups.

Group A consisted of Spain, South Korea, and Italy.

Group B consisted of India, Japan, Chile and South Africa.

India remained unbeaten in the tournament.

3. India wins blind T20 cricket world cup for third consecutive times

India wins blind T20 cricket world cup for third consecutive times

India defeated Bangladesh by 120 runs in the final to win the 3rd T20 World Cup for Blind played at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka on 17 December 2022.  It was the third title for India having won it in 2012 and 2017. All the three T20 World Cup for Blind has been hosted by India.

Batting first India made 277 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 20 allotted overs. Indian captain Ajay Kumar Reddy and Sunil Ramesh scored centuries.

In reply Bangladesh could make only 157 runs with the loss of 3 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Governor of Karnataka Thawar Chand Gehlot presented the winners and runners up trophies.

The 3rd T20 World Cup for Blind was held in India from 6 -17 December 2022.  India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa competed in the tournament. The Pakistan team was denied a visa by the Indian government.

 It was organised by the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI).

CABI is the apex body for organising, developing cricket for blind in India .It is a member of the World Blind Cricket Council.

The 4th T20 World Cup for Blind will be held in Pakistan in 2023.

Cindy Hook appointed CEO of 2032 Olympic organising committeeAmerican executive Cindy Hook has been appointed as CEO of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The organising committee announced her appointment.

Important facts

  • She is currently a member of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and the Singapore Economic Development Board.

  • US-born Cindy Hook, 58, led Deloitte's Asia Pacific branch for nearly three years before stepping down in June this year with the intention of retiring from corporate work.

  • She previously worked for the international professional services network in the U.S. and in Australia, moving to Sydney in 2009 to lead the auditing practice for six years and later becoming CEO of the Australian operation in 2015.

  • Brisbane 2032 chairman Andrew Liveris described Hooke as someone who knows what it takes to run a multi-billion dollar business on time and on budget.

  • The International Olympic Committee in July last year decided to host the 2032 Games in Brisbane as part of a revised process.

  • Australia has twice previously hosted the Summer Olympics, at Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

Morocco to host the next football club world cup next year, FIFA

World football governing body FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced on 16 December 2022 that Morocco will host the next football Club World Cup. The tournament will take place from 1-11 February 2023. Morocco has hosted the Club World Cup in 2013 and 2014.

The most recent edition of the tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates in February 2022 which was won by the English football club Chelsea.

Gianni Infantino also announced that from 2025 onwards the tournament will feature 32 teams.

However the tournament will continue in its existing format for now, featuring the champions of the six continental federations along with the top team from the host nation.

Teams which have qualified for 2023 tournament 

Real Madrid of Spain ( will represent Europe), Flamengo of Brazil(South America), Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia(Asia), Wydad Casablanca of Morocco(host country champion club ), Seattle Sounders from the United States(North America) and New Zealand's Auckland City club (Oceania) .

FIFA Club World Cup 

It is an international club football championship where the continental club champions participate every year.

The club champions of Asian AFC Championships League, African CAF Championships League, North American CONCACAF Championships League, South America Copa Libertadores, Oceanian OFC Champions League, European UEFA Champions League and the  club champion of the host team participates  in the tournament.

  • The first club world cup was held in 2000 at Brazil which was won by Corinthians Paulista of Brazil.
  • Real Madrid football club of Spain has won the cup for the maximum 4 times.
  • The Spanish football clubs (Real Madrid 4 times and Barcelona 3 times) have won it a maximum of 7 times.

Neeraj Chopra becomes the most written-about athlete in 2022

According to the World Athletics, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra of India was the most written about track and field athlete in 2022, displacing the Jamaican legend Usain Bolt from the top lists.

Quoting the data collated by media Analysis Company Unicepta the World Athletics body on 16 December 2022 said that there were 812 articles written about Neeraj Chopra in 2022.

Neeraj Chopra was followed by Jamaican trio of Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah (751 articles), 100m world champion Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce (698 articles) and 200m world champion Shericka Jackson (679 articles).

Neeraj Chopra had a very successful 2022. He won the silver medal at the World Athletic Championships 2022 in Eugene, Oregon, becoming only the second Indian to win a worlds medal after Anju Bobby George’s bronze in the women’s long jump in 2003.

Neeraj Chopra also became the first athlete from India to win the Diamond League final this year.

In Swimming, Indian swimmer Chahat Arora set a national record in the women's 100-metre breaststroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships 2022 in Melbourne, Australia on 14 December.

  • Chahat Arora completed the 100-metre breaststroke race in 1 minute, 13.13 seconds.

  • Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte, topped the overall heats in 1 minute, 3.81 seconds, which was 9.32 seconds quicker than Chahat Arora.

  • The 19-year-old Lara Van Niekerk of South Africa came second in 1 minute 3.93 seconds, while Lilly King of the USA came third in 1 minute 3.94 seconds.

  • Chahat will participate in the women's 50m breaststroke event on 17 December. Siva Sridhar will compete in the 100-metre individual medley on 15 December.
