Jay Shah elected head of ICC Finance and Commercial Affairs

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah who is also the son of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah was elected as the head of the Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Jay Shah is also currently the President of the Asian Cricket Council.

He was elected at the International cricket Council’s (ICC) Board meeting held in Melbourne, Australia on 12 November 2022.

He will succeed Ross McCollum as chair of the committee at its next meeting in March 2023.

The Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) committee of the ICC is considered to be the second most powerful body of the ICC after the ICC Board .  The ICC F&CA not only decides the ICC budget but also decide the revenue sharing model between the member countries, media and TV rights etc. 

Greg Barclay re-elected as Chairman of ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unanimously re-elected Greg Barclay of New Zealand  as the chairman of the governing body for a second two-year term. Barclay was unopposed after the withdrawal of Zimbabwe’s Tavengwa Mukuhlan.

ICC is an international body which governs the men’s and women’s international cricket.

2. Kotian, Sarfaraz stars in the Mumbai first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

 Mumbai first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

A power packed performance from Sarfraz Khan and Tanush Kotian propelled Mumbai cricket team to its maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.  The Mumbai team beat Himachal Pradesh by 3 wickets in the final played at the Eden Garden Stadium, Kolkata on 5 November 2022. Sarfaraz scored an unbeaten 36 off 31 balls, while Kotian claimed three wickets as Mumbai lifted the trophy at the Eden Gardens.

The Mumbai team led by Ajinkaya Rahane won the toss and invited Himachal to bat first. The Himachal team made 143 for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

The Mumbai team achieved the target with a score of 146 for the loss of 7 wickets and won the match by 3 wickets.

Tanush Kotia was declared as the player of the match.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 

The Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy is organized by the  BCCI (Board for Control of Cricket in India). It is a premier domestic T20 cricket tournament which was launched in 2006-07 season.

Initially it was named as T20 Inter- State Championship but it was renamed later as Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.

Tamil Nadu has won it maximum 3 times.

3. BCCI elects Roger Binny as the new President; to start women IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unanimously elected former Indian all-rounder Roger Binny as the 36th President of the BCCI at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the BCCI which was held in Mumbai on 18 October 2022. The BCCI also decided to start the women's IPL and not to participate in the Asia cricket cup to be held in Pakistan in 2023.

Roger Binny who represented Karnataka and India, played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs for India and was also a National selector. He will replace Saurav Ganguly whose three-year tenure as the board chief came to an end. 

Other Office Bearers of BCCI 

All the other office bearers of the BCCI were also elected unanimously including;

  • Jay Shah as Secretary ,
  • Rajeev Shukla as Vice-President.
  • Ashish Shelar  as Treasurer and
  • Devajit Saikia as Joint Secretary. 
  • Arun Dhumal was elected as the new Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman. He will replace Brijesh Patel. 

Women's IPL approved

The General Body also approved the inaugural Women's IPL which will consist of five teams and will be held in March 2023 just after the Women's T20 World Cup ends in South Africa on February 26.

India will not tour Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah who is also the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced that India will not be going to Pakistan next year to participate in the Asia cup.

India have not toured Pakistan since 2006 and have not played bilateral cricket against them since 2012 because of strained relations between the governments of the two countries. Their contests have taken place only at ICC and Asian events.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

It is the governing body of men’s and women’s cricket in India. It selects the Indian team for International tours and for International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asian Cup tournaments.

The BCCI is an autonomous, private organisation and does not fall under the purview of the National Sports Federation of India. 

It was set up in 1928.

Grant Govan was the first President of the BCCI.

4. Rest of India wins the Irani Cup by 8 wickets defatting Ranji Champion Saurashtra

Hanuma Vihari led Rest of India won the Irani Trophy for the 29th time as it beat the Ranji Champion Saurashtra by 8 wickets on the fourth day of the Irani cup.

The Irani trophy which is a curtain raiser of the domestic cricket season in India was held at Rajkot from 1-4 October 2022.

Mukesh Kumar of Rest of India was the Player of the match for his 5 wickets haul in the match.

The Saurashtra side was led by Jaydev Unadkant.

Irani Trophy 

It is organised by the Board of Control of Cricket (BCCI) between the current Ranji Trophy champion team and the Rest of India team. Four Day match is played in the Irani Trophy.

It was started in 1969-70 by the BCCI. It was named after the BCCI treasurer Zal Irani.

Rest of India has won it 29 times.

5. Road Safety World Series : Ojha’s century guides Sachin-led India Legends to second straight title win

In the Road Safety World Series T20 2022, Sachin Tendulkar-led India Legends team created history by defeating Sri Lanka Legends by 33 runs in Raipur on 1 September. The team won this title for the second time in a row.

Important facts

  • Electing to bat after winning the toss, India Legends team scored 195 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs with the help of wicketkeeper batsman Naman Ojha's century innings.

  • In reply, Sri Lanka Legends could only manage 162 runs in 18.5 overs.

  • Naman Ojha scored an unbeaten 108 off 71 balls with the help of 15 fours and 2 sixes.

  • Nama Ojha's innings earned him the title of 'Man of the Match'.

  • He scored the highest 266 runs in 6 matches at an average of 66.50 in 6 innings.

  • Shane Watson of Australia Legends was at number two, he scored 239 runs in 5 matches at an average of 47.80.

  • In the Road Safety World Series T20 2020-21 also, the final was played between the team of India Legends and Sri Lanka Legends.

  • The team led by Sachin Tendulkar scored 181 for 4 in 20 overs and won by 14 runs.

  • Road Safety World Series is a T20 cricket league, which features former international cricket players from various nations.

  • It is founded by the chief of Road Traffic Officer of Thane and the Konkan region, Ravi Gaikwad in collaboration with the BCCI.

  • This league is organized every year by the Road Safety World Series organization to raise awareness about road safety.

  • Players from India, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh participate in this series.

  • Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar is the commissioner of the series, while Sachin Tendulkar is the brand ambassador.

6. West Zone defeats South Zone in final to win the Cricket’s 2022 Duleep trophy

West Zone won the cricket’s Duleep Trophy title (2021-22 season) after defeating South Zone by 294 runs on the fifth and final day in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu on 25 September 2022.

Set a target of 529 runs for an outright win, South Zone were bowled out for 234 in 71.2 overs.

This is the 20th time the West Zone has won the Duleep Trophy. In addition it has also won the trophy 3 times as joint winner. West Zone has won it maximum times .

This year West Zone, South Zone, East Zone, North Zone, Central Zone and north East Zone teams participated in the Duleep Trophy.

Yashasvi Jaiswal of West Zone was declared as the Player of the final and Jaydev Unadkant of West Zone was declared as the Player of the Series. 

Duleep Trophy 

It is an annual first-class cricket competition organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). 

It was named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar (also known as 'Duleep'), and was started by the BCCI in the 1961-62 season.

The whole country is divided into different zones. However from the 2016-17 to 2019-20 seasons, the Duleep Trophy was contested by 3 teams - India Red, India Blue and India Green.

 West Zone won the inaugural Duleep Trophy in 1962.

7. India to host Women's ODI World Cup in 2025

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), India will host the ICC Women's ODI World Cup for the year 2025.

Important facts

  • The Council has selected four countries to host the ICC Women's World Cup from 2024 to 2027.

  • These countries are India, Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka.

  • Bangladesh will host the Women's T20 World Cup competition in the year 2024.

  • The 2026 edition of the Women's T20 World Cup will be held in England.

  • Sri Lanka will host the 2027 Women's T20 Champions Trophy but it will depend on whether they qualify for the competition.

  • The host countries were selected through a bidding process conducted under the supervision of a subcommittee of the ICC Board.

  • The committee also included Sourav Ganguly, President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

8. Sunil Chhetri becomes joint 5th highest goalscorer in international football history

Indian men's football team captain Sunil Chhetri has become the joint fifth highest goalscorer in international football history.

  • Sunil Chhetri scored his 84th international goal against Hong Kong during the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup 2023 Qualifier and achieved the feat by equaling the record held by Real Madrid and Hungarian football legend Ferenc Puskas.

  • He is now behind only Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina's Lionel Messi among active footballers.

  • Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India Limited (CCIC), popularly known as Central Cottage Industries Emporium, has opened 'Lota Shop'.

  • It displays the finest handicrafts, souvenirs, handicrafts and textiles based on the traditional craft forms of India.

  • It has immense potential to attract foreign tourists and buyers.

  • It will give a new direction to the handicrafts sector as well as the artisans in the light of the 'One Nation One Product' initiative launched by the Centre.

  • The centre is also working towards one district one product which will give impetus to the handicrafts sector as well as the artisans.

  • The museum provides accommodation facilities and also provides audio-visual facilities for the visitors.

  • What is One District One Product scheme?

  • It aims to realize the true potential of a district, promote economic development and generate employment and rural entrepreneurship.

  • The Ministry of Food Processing had entered into an agreement with NAFED to develop 10 brands into one district one product brand.

  • Of this, six brands have been launched till now.

  • All products will be available across NAFED markets, e-commerce platforms and leading retail stores across India.

  • It was launched by the Uttar Pradesh government in January, 2018, and was later adopted by the central government after seeing its success.

10. BJP wins eight out of 16 Rajya Sabha seats while Congress bags five seats

The BJP won eight of the 16 Rajya Sabha seats in four states, while the Congress won five in a tight contest.

  • Biennial elections to the Upper House of Parliament were held on June 10 for six seats in Maharashtra, four each in Karnataka and Rajasthan and two in Haryana.

  • Winners from BJP include Union Minister Piyush Goyal, former state minister Anil Bonde and party leader Dhananjay Mahadik.

  • NCP's Praful Patel, Congress' Imran Pratapgadi and Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut were also elected to Rajya Sabha. 

  • In Haryana, BJP candidate Krishan Lal Panwar and Independent candidate Kartikeya Sharma, have won the two Rajya Sabha seats.

  • BJP got three seats and Congress got one seat from Karnataka.

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, actor Jaggesh and MLC Lehar Singh Siroya have been elected to Rajya Sabha from BJP. 

  • Jairam Ramesh of Congress won the remaining one seat. 

  • The Congress won three of the four Rajya Sabha seats while one seat was won by the BJP In Rajasthan.

  • Randeep Singh Surjewala, Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari are the winners from Congress. 

  • Ghanshyam Tiwari won a seat for the BJP in Rajasthan.
