1. 3rd National Tribal Dance festival comes to an end in Raipur, Chhattisgarh

National Tribal Dance festival

The third National Tribal Dance festival, organised by the Chhattisgarh government to promote tribal culture, folk dance, folk music, and folk art came to an end on 3 November 2022.

The three day (1-3 November) National Dance festival was held at the Chhattisgarh capital Raipur on the occasion of the 22nd foundation day of Chhattisgarh state.  Chhattisgarh state was founded on 1 November 2000 after the bifurcation of Madhya Pradesh.

According to the 2011 census 30.62% of the population of the state were Scheduled Tribes.

In this year more than 1500 tribal performers from India and 10 other nations including Mozambique, Mongolia, Tonga, Russia, Indonesia, Maldives, Serbia, New Zealand, and Egypt, performed at the event.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel inaugurated the festival on 1 November 2022.

 National Tribal Dance Festival 

To promote tribal culture Chhattisgarh organised the first national tribal dance festival from 27th December to 29th December 2019.

The second national tribal dance festival was organised from 28th October to 1st November 2021.

The third edition of this festival (NTDF) started from 1st of November on the occasion of 22nd foundation day of Chhattisgarh state. It concluded on 3 November 2022.

 Some of the famous tribal dance forms of are India are Cheraw Bamboo dance from Mizoram, the Kalbelia dance from Rajasthan, Elelakkaradi dance from Kerala, Bhagoria from Madhya Pradesh, Chhau dance from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha, Dhimsa from Andhra Pradesh, Shad Suk Mynsiem from Meghalaya,Santhali dance by the Santhal tribals from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha.

2. “Baji Rout National Football Tournament” inaugurated in Dhenkanal Odisha by Dharmendra Pradhan

Baji Rout National Football Tournament

Union Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the “Baji Rout National Football Tournament in Dhenkanal, Odisha on 3 November 2022. 

Speaking on the occasion he said that to promote football in India the government with FIFA and All India Football Federation (AIFF)  has launched the 'Football 4 School' initiative.

The minister revealed that the programme has been targeted to rope in about two crore fifty lakh school students towards football. He said that ten lakh footballs will be distributed among the government and private schools in all the districts of the country through the Jawahar Navoday Vidyalaya.

3. President Murmu inaugurates the permanent Northeast Campus of IIMC in Aizawl

Campus of IIMC in Aizawl

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) North East campus located at  Aizawl in Mizoram University in virtual mode on 3 November 2022.

The IIMC North East Campus began functioning in 2011 from a temporary building made available by Mizoram University. The construction work for the campus began in 2015 and was completed in 2019.

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is a premiere Journalism Institute under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. 

It was inaugurated in 1965 to cater the training needs of media professionals in the country and other developing countries. 

It has set up five regional center in India to cater the need of five regions of India 

The Regional centers of IIMC are;

Eastern Regional Center   :  IIMC Dhenkanal near Bhubaneswar, Odisha 

Western Regional Center: Amravati, Maharashtra 

Northern Regional Center: Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir

4. ECI announces two phase election to elect 15th Gujarat Legislative Assembly

Election in Gujarat

The Election Commission of India(ECI) on 3 November 2022 has announced that the election to constitute the 15th Legislative Assembly of Gujarat will be held on 1st and 5th of December 2022 and the counting will be done on 8 December 2022.The term of the  current and 14th Legislative Assembly will end on 18 February 2023.

Election in Gujarat 

The Gujarat Assembly has 182 seats with 13 seats reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 27 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST).   

In the first phase, 89 seats will go to the polls and elections will be held in 93 seats in the second phase.

According to the election commissioner around 4 crore 92 lakh people are eligible to vote in the election.

Announcing the schedule of the Assembly poll the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that counting of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and Gujarat Legislative Assembly polls will be conducted on 8 December and the process will be completed by 10 December 2022.

The Himachal Pradesh Assembly goes to poll on 12 November 2022 to constitute the 14th Legislative Assembly.

Gujarat Legislative Assembly 

The first Gujarat Legislative Assembly was constituted on 1 May 1960 when the Bombay State was bifurcated into Marathi speaking state of Maharashtra and Guajarati speaking state of Gujarat.

The Bombay State Legislative Assembly which was constituted in 1957 consisted of 389 members.

Out of this Gujarat Legislative Assembly was created with 132 members.

The first election to constitute the 2nd Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1962 

The 14th and current Legislative Assembly was constituted on 19 February 2018.

5. Independent India’s first voter Shyam Saran Negi exercise his franchise in Himachal Poll

Shyam Saran Negi

106 years old Shyam Saran Negi of Himachal Pradesh exercised his right to franchise and voted for the 34th time in his life on 2 November 2022.  

Shyam Saran Negi who is the first voter of the Independent India voted in the 14th Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha elections through postal ballot at his home in Kalpa, Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.

Born in July 1917, Shyam Saran Negi voted for the first time in 1951 in general elections of India and has voted for sixteen times in Lok Sabha Elections.

He is also a state election icon since 2014.

A teacher by profession, the centenarian has voted in every election since 1951 and has never missed an opportunity to vote.

The election to constitute the 14th Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha will be held on 12 November 2022. 

The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly has 68 seats.

Postal Ballot 

As the name suggests special ballot papers are issued to designated persons by the Election commission of India and the voters have to send the ballot paper back to the returning officer before the counting of the vote’s starts in the constituency.

.According to the Election Commission of India following Persons are entitled to vote by post:

  • Special voter’s .It includes Persons with Disability, senior citizens above the age of 80 years and covid-19 positive patient,
  • Service voters (Armed Forces personnel, paramilitary personnel)
  • Voters on election duty and;
  • Voters who are in jail and held under the preventive detention provision of law.

The colour of the postal ballot is Pink.

6. President Droupadi Murmu to inaugurate 7th 'India Water Week' in Greater Noida on 1 November 2022

President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the 7th India Water Week in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh on 1 November 2022. Denmark, Singapore, and Finland will be the partner countries for this event.

The 7th India Water Week is being organised by the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation from 1 -5 November 2022 to raise awareness, conserve and use water resources in an integrated manner.

The theme of the 7th India Water Week 2022: Water Security for Sustainable Development and Equity”.

7. Maharashtra’s first Electronics Manufacturing Cluster to be set up at Ranjangaon, Pune

Maharashtra’s first Electronics

The government of India has approved the first Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in Ranjangaon Phase III, near Pune in Maharashtra. This was announced by the Union Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Rajeev Chandrasekhar on 31 October 2022.

The Rs 492.85 crores Greenfield   project is being developed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and the State government’s State Industrial Agency. Government expects investment of over Rs 2000 crore  from Indian and multinational companies in the  Pune EMC.

The Minister said that these EMCs in India will prove to be the pivot points around which the electronics manufacturing and design ecosystem will flourish. It will help achieve the target of US $300 Billion of electronics manufacturing by 2025/26.

Electronics Manufacturing Cluster scheme

The Electronics Manufacturing Cluster scheme was launched by the government of India in 2012 to make India a global player in the field of Electronics Manufacturing. 

The EMC provides for creation of world-class infrastructure for attracting investments in the Electronics Systems Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) Sector.

8. More than 134 people killed in a bridge collapse in Morbi, Gujarat

In a tragic incident more than 134 people have been reported dead after a cable bridge collapsed in Morbi town in Gujarat on 30 October 2022.  The authorities fear that the casualties could grow as many bodies are likely to be recovered from the river.

The 230-metre (755 feet) bridge on river Machhu was built during British colonial rule in 1877. It was recently renovated and opened to the public. 

Some 400 people including children had bought tickets to get onto the bridge to celebrate the Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals. However the bridge collapsed and plunged people about 10 meters (33 feet) into the river below.

The Gujarat government has ordered an inquiry into the tragedy and filed an FIR against the Oreva company which was responsible for the maintenance of the bridge.

Machhu River 

The Machhu River rises in the Madla hills of Jasdan near village Khokhara in Chotila taluka of Surendranagar district of Gujarat.

This is one of the North flowing rivers of Saurashtra in Gujarat state. It falls into the little Rann of Kachchh. 

Total length of this North Flowing river from its origin to its outfall into the little Rann of Kachchh is 114.75 km.

9. Yogi Adityanath inaugurates Asia’s first pathogen reduction machine at KGMU in Lucknow

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated Asia’s first pathogen reduction machine at the King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow. He was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, State minister Mayankeshwar Sharan and Professor Bipin Puri, Vice Chancellor of King George's Medical University. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the KGMU’s Department of Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery.

What is a Pathogen? 

  • The pathogens is an organism which can cause disease to its host body.   It could be viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites.
  • Pathogens cause illness to their hosts through a variety of ways. It directly damages the tissues or cells of the host  during replication,
  • However, sometimes due to a strong or excessive immune response from the host body, the body itself kills infected and uninfected cells and damages host tissues. 

Need of cleaning transfused blood of pathogens 

  • Blood transfusions are needed in procedures ranging from surgery to delivery and transplant. Blood transfusion is always done after all the necessary blood tests are done. But despite this, some impurities like pathogens remain in the blood, due to which reactions or side effects can be seen in recipient patients. 
  • This machine helps in eliminating any type of pathogens in the donor's blood which will prove to be very beneficial for organ transplant or patients with weak immunity.
  • The machine is capable of completely purifying the blood unit by removing all types of bacteria from the blood within 10-15 minutes through the ultraviolet immunometer.

10. Kerala to cull 20,000 birds after Avian flu outbreak in Alappuzha

The Alappuzha district administration in Kerala has started the culling of around 20,000 birds in the Haripad municipality area to control the spread of the Avian flu outbreak.

The district administration started the operation from 27 October 2022 after the sample of dead birds from the area was sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal tested positive for H5N1 virus.

Birds within one kilometer of the infection area will be killed and the authorities have already imposed a ban on the transportation of birds within 1 kilometer area. 

Center sends a high level delegation

The Union Ministry of Health has already sent a high-level team headed by Dr Rajesh Kedamani to Kerala to investigate the outbreak in detail and submit a report with immediate recommendations for prevention and control.

The seven-member team comprises experts drawn from the National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, New Delhi; the National Centre for Disease Control, New Delhi; the National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai; and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Bird Flu and its Impact on Human 

  • Avian influenza or bird flu refers to the disease caused by infection with avian (bird) influenza (flu) Type A viruses. These viruses naturally spread among wild aquatic birds worldwide and can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species.
  • Infected birds shed virus through saliva, mucus and feces. The virus can affect human beings through eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Bird flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with bird flu viruses have occurred. According to the World Health Organisation , Humans can be infected with  avian influenza virus subtypes A(H5N1), A(H7N9), and A(H9N2) .
