1. Goa to host the 37 National Games

The Indian Olympics Association has announced that the 37th National games 2023 will be hosted by Goa in October. The dates will be announced later. This is the first time that Goa will host the National Games.

The 36th National Games was initially scheduled to be held in Goa in 2016 but was postponed a few times and later shifted to Gujarat. 

It is being held in six cities of Gujarat -- Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar from September 27 to October 10.

The 35th National Games was held in Kerala in 2015.

The first National games was organized in India as Indian Olympics Games in 1924 in Lahore. 

Indian Olympic Association (IOA)

It was set up in 1927. The Indian Olympic Association is the governing body for the Olympic Movement and the Commonwealth Games in India

It is an International Olympics Committee recognised body which sends Indian teams for the Olympics, Asian and other multinational sporting events.

Sir Dorabji Tata was the first President of the IOA.

2. PM Modi officially declares 'Modhera village' as India’s first solar powered village

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on a three day(9-11 October 2022) visit to Gujarat, officially declared Modhera village in Mehsana district of Gujarat as India’s first 24x7  solar powered village on 9 October 2022.

The Modhera village is provided round the clock electricity by over 1000 rooftop solar power panels installed in the village and also through Battery Energy Storage System at night.

Modhera is the first modern village in India with a solar-based ultra-modern electric vehicle charging station.

Another distinction of this project is that it is India’s first grid-connected mega-watt hour scale battery energy storage system.

Project Modhera

In 2019 the Central government and the state government started the joint project to power the Modhera village in Mehsana district with solar power.

The Gujarat government had allotted 12 hectares of land for development of this project and an amount of Rs 80.66 crore was spent on a 50:50 basis by Centre and state government in two phases,

More than 1,300 1 kW rooftop solar systems have been installed on houses which generate electricity. And electricity is supplied free of cost to the villagers.

Modhera’s Sun Temple

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 3-D projection facility powered by solar energy for the Modhera’s Sun Temple. The sun temple is a protected archaeological site and heritage lighting has been installed on the temple premise.

The solar-powered 3-D projection will educate visitors about the history of Modhera. 

Sun Temple is situated on the bank of river Pushpavati. It was built by King Bhima-I of Chalukya dynasty in 1026-27.

3. Nitin Gadkari and Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurates Indian Roads Congress in Lucknow

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurated the 81st annual session of the Indian roads Congress in Lucknow on 8 October 2022.

The 81st Indian roads Congress is being hosted by the Uttar Pradesh government in Lucknow from 8-11 October 2022.

Speaking on the occasion Nitin Gadkari announced road projects worth eight thousand crore rupees for Uttar Pradesh including 13 Road Over Bridges with the fund of one thousand crore rupees.

 Road Congress will discuss modern techniques in road construction and it will have many sessions regarding it.


The Indian Roads Congress (IRC) is the Apex Body of Highway Engineers in the country. The IRC was set up in December, 1934 on the recommendations of the Indian Road Development Committee best known as Jayakar Committee set up by the Government of India with the objective of Road Development in India.

4. PM Modi to declare Gujarat’s ‘Modhera’ as India’s First Solar-Powered Village on 9 October

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will declare Gujarat’s village Modhera as India’s first solar-powered village on October 9, 2022. The village is supplied electricity during the daytime through  the rooftop solar panels installed in the village and during night the  Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)  provides power supply to the houses.

5. Amit Shah inaugurates the Eastern and North-Eastern Cooperative Dairy Conclave 2022 in Gangtok, Sikkim

The Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, Amit Shah inaugurated the Eastern and North-Eastern Cooperative Dairy Conclave 2022 in Sikkim capital, Gangtok, on 7 October 2022. 

 Speaking on the occasion the minister said that “milk production is the only way for women empowerment, poverty alleviation and doubling of farmer's income.

 Lauding the achievement of the Sikkim dairy farmers he said that  “ Sikkim state, which is called the Switzerland of the Northeast, should not be known only for its beauty, but also by enriching every village, a  prosperous and developed state’.

Operation Flood 

To increase the production of milk and dairy products in the country, Operation Flood was launched in the country in 1970 with the help of the European Union and World Food Programme.

Operation flood was based on the cooperative model where farmers formed dairy cooperatives.

In this cooperative model of development, a pioneering role was played by Verghese Kurien who was instrumental in setting up Anand Milk Union Limited (AMUL) in Anand, Gujarat in 1950. This successful model was replicated all over India and now India is the largest producer of milk in the world.

Verghese Kurien is also called as the milk man of India, Father of white revolution (Dairy revolution)

Uttar Pradesh is the largest milk producing state in India.

6. Tamilnadu bans online gambling as the governor issues the ordinance

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has given his consent to promulgate an ordinance to prohibit online gambling and to regulate online games in the State. This comes after the State government headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin on September 26 approved the ordinance.

The Tamilnadu government set up a committee headed by former Judge of the Madras High Court, Justice K Chandru, to look into the adverse effects of online rummy. This was decided after incidents of online gaming addicts losing money and falling into a debt trap.

The Committee submitted its report to Stalin in two weeks, and it was placed for the consideration of the Cabinet on the same day.

Ordinance issuing power of the Governor 

Under article 213 of the Indian constitution the state governor has the power to issue the ordinance when the state legislative assembly is not in session and is satisfied that circumstance warrants the promulgation of ordinance.

Ordinance is an emergency law making power of the governor, valid for six months.

7. Annual festival Sirimanotsavam organized in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh

The annual Sirimanotsavam will be held on October 11 at Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh.

Important facts

  • This major tribal-folk festival to be held in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh could not take place in the last two years due to COVID-19.

  • This annual festival is also known as Sirimanu Panduga.

  • Four to five lakh people are expected to come from different parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

About Sirimanotsavam festival

  • It is a major festival of the presiding deity of Vizianagaram town Sri Pydithalli Ammavari Jatara. 

  • Traditionally, Sirimotsavam Jatara is celebrated every year on the first Tuesday after the Dussehra festival.

  • Devotees will witness the spectacle of a priest sitting on top of a 55-foot pillar (Sirimanu) in royal robes around the fort.

  • The priest hanging from the upper end of Sirimanu blesses the devotees and the chariot is driven through the main road to Vizianagaram.

8. Home Minister announces Scheduled Tribe status for Pahari community in J&K

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Pahari community in Jammu and Kashmir on 5 October.

Important facts

  • In the report submitted to the government by the Justice GD Sharma Commission, it was recommended to give reservation to the Paharis.

  • Reservation will be started after completing the administrative formalities.

  • The President of India may, after consultation with the Governor of the State, designate tribes or tribal communities as Scheduled Tribes.

  • The Indian Parliament may by law include or exclude any caste in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

About Pahari Community

  • Pahari people is a term used for several heterogeneous communities settled in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

  • Pahari is a term used to describe the various northern Indo-Aryan languages spoken by the people, most of them found in the lower Himalayas.

Four tribes to the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST)

  • The Hatti tribe in the Trans-Giri area in Himachal Pradesh.

  • The Narikoravan and Kurivikkaran hill tribes of Tamil Nadu.

  • The Binjhia tribe in Chhattisgarh.

  • The Cabinet also approved a proposal to bring the Gond community of Uttar Pradesh under the ST list.

9. Gujarat becomes first state to launch Gati Shakti Portal

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the Gati Shakti Portal on 6 October and said that Gujarat is the first state in India to have launched Gati Shakti Port at the state level.

Important facts

  • In order to rapidly expand the Internet service, the Gati Shakti Portal started by the Central Government was also started by the Gujarat Government.

  • This portal has been started based on the guidance and guidelines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • The portal has been developed by Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board in collaboration with Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics.

  • The portal will provide ease of doing business to the investors by bringing more transparency in governance. This will save time, money and logistics cost.

  • It will integrate more than 500 layers of data from 21 state government departments and 52 sub-departments.

  • Portal focuses on the speedy execution of infrastructure projects in the state.

  • The main objective of this portal is to reduce red tapism. 

  • With the help of this, infrastructure projects will be accelerated.

PM Gati-Shakti Scheme 

  • Gati Shakti Yojana or 'National Master Plan for Multi-Modal Connectivity Plan' was launched on 13 October 2021 for coordinated and execution of infrastructure projects to reduce logistics cost.

  • It is a digital platform that will bring together 16 Ministries including Railways and Roadways for integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects.

  • This will help in overcoming long-standing issues such as inconsistent planning, lack of standardisation, problems related to clearances, and timely construction and utilization of infrastructure capabilities.

  • This platform aims to prevent overlapping of works by addressing the issue of government departments working in tandem.

10. PM Modi inaugurates AIIMS in Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Kothipura in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh on 6 October.

  • Spread over an area of 247 acres, this Rs 1,471 crore 750 bedded premier medical institution will provide super specialty medical treatment to the people of the area.

  • The PM also inaugurated 140 crore Government Hydro Engineering College at Bandla in Bilaspur.

  • He also laid the foundation stone of Rs.350 crore medical devices park to be set up under the Nalagarh and Pinjore-Nalagarh four-lane road project to be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,692 crore under Bharat Mala project.

  • The PM also participated in Kullu Dussehra celebrations at Dhalpur Ground in Kullu.

Kullu Dussehra in Himachal Pradesh 

  • Dussehra is world famous in Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh.

  • The specialty of Kullu Dussehra is the chariot procession of Lord Raghunath.

  • The week-long Kullu Dussehra has traditionally been a majestic festival.

  • It signifies the victory of good over evil.

  • According to legends, Kullu was ruled by Raja Jagat Singh in the 16th century.

  • The king was told that someone named Durgadatta had beautiful white pearls and that the king wanted pearls.

  • Durgadatta tried to convince the king that he did not have pearls, the king did not believe him.

  • Durgadutt set himself on fire along with his family and cursed the king.

  • The king felt guilty and on the advice of a learned Brahmin went to the shelter of Lord Raghunath.
