1. Tamilnadu Government to launch ‘SIRPI’ programme in Schools

The Tamil Nadu government will launch SIRPI (Students In Responsible Police Initiative) along the lines of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The initiative will be launched by the Chief Minister M K Stalin. The Greater Chennai Police is forming SIRPI units. In the first stage, 50 students will be selected from 100 schools.
  • According to the Tamil Nadu government, the project is aimed at addressing the issue of juvenile delinquency, driven by factors such as socio-economic status, peer pressure, lack of family support and unemployment.

2. Nagaland holds its first ever Naga Mircha Festival at Seihama

The 'Naga Mircha (Naga King Chili) Festival' - 2022 was organised for the first time on 10th September at Seihama village of Kohima district in Nagaland.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The festival was organised by the Horticulture Department.
  • Many northern Angami villages cultivate chillies, with the village of Seihama becoming a major producer with a variety of species.

About Naga Mircha :

  • Considered to be the world's hottest chili, the Naga Mircha (King Chili) has consistently been placed in the top five in the list of world's hottest chilies based on SHU.

  • It is also known as 'Raja Mircha', 'Bhoot Jolokia' or 'Ghost Pepper'.

  • It was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2008. It belongs to the genus Capsicum of the Solanaceae family.

  • It is an indigenous crop of Nagaland, which is believed to have originated from the Jeliangrong region of Nagaland and is extensively grown in Peren, Som, Kohima and Dimapur.

  • It is of normal size and matures to a bright red colour.

Nagaland State :

  • Nagaland was formally recognized as a separate state on December 1, 1963, with Kohima declared as its capital.

  • It is bounded by Arunachal Pradesh in the northeast, Manipur in the south and Assam in the west and northwest and Myanmar (Burma) in the east.

  • Mithun (Gyal) is the state animal of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

  • Blyth's Tragopan is the state bird of Nagaland.

  • The Konyaks are the largest tribe, followed by the Aos, Tangkhul, Semas and Angami.

  • Other tribes include the Lotha, Sangtam, Phom, Chang, Khim Hungama, Yimchungar, Zeliang, Chakhesang (chokri) and Rengm

3. Army’s Kibithu base in Arunachal Pradesh renamed after first CDS, late General Bipin Rawat

To honour the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) late General Bipin Rawat, the Kibithu military garrison in Arunachal was named as General Bipin Rawat garrison on 10 September 2022.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Kibithu is a small hamlet near Walong on the banks of the Lohit Valley in Arunachal Pradesh close to the India-China border.
  • Gen Rawat commanded his Battalion 5/11 Gorkha Rifles as a Colonel at Kibithu from 1999-2000.
  • The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh (Retd), Brigadier BD Mishra, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and other senior military and civilian dignitaries were present on the occasion along with daughters of the late CDS.
  • General Bipin Rawat and his wife along with senior Army and Air Force officers died in a Helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu 8 December 2021. He was going to the  Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Tamil Nadu to address the faculty and student officers of the ‘Staff Course.
  • He was the 27th Army chief and was the first Chief of Defence Staff. He was appointed to the Chief of Defence Staff post on December 31, 2019.

Arunachal Pradesh :

  • It is the easternmost region of India. It is also called ‘Land of the Dawn-lit-Mountains’ or land of rising sun.
  • It shares its International border with China, Bhutan and Myanmar.
  • Arunachal Pradesh finds its mention in the literature of Kalika Purana and the great Hindu Epic Mahabharata. It is believed to be the Prabhu Mountains of the Puranas.
  • It was earlier called as North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) and it was renamed as Arunachal Pradesh in 1972. It was a Union Territory.

4. Rajasthan Government launches Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Scheme’ to provide 100 days of employment

The Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on 9 September 2022 launched the ‘Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Scheme’ to provide 100 days of employment in a year to families residing in urban areas of the state.  The scheme was announced by the government in the state budget 2022-23.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

Employment under the scheme :

  • The scheme provides that eligible persons will get a minimum 100 days of employment in a year.
  • This scheme will be implemented in all the urban local bodies of the state.
  • At least 50 people will be given employment in each ward of urban local bodies.

Who are eligible ?

  • People who are in the age group of 18 -60 years and living in the urban areas are eligible for jobs under the scheme. 

Budget for the scheme :

  • Government of Rajasthan has allocated Rs 800 crore for the scheme 

Nature of works offered :

  • According to the government the scheme will offer works related to environment protection, water and heritage conservation, garden maintenance, and removing encroachments, illegal sign boards, hoardings, banners, sanitation, cleanliness and other such works.

Wages offered under the scheme :

  • Under the scheme unskilled labour will be provided a wage of ₹259 per day, skilled workers will be given ₹283 each day and mates will be given ₹271 per day.
  • The government will credit the wage payment in the bank accounts of the beneficiary within 15 days.

5. First National Conference on Sustainable Coastal Management in India inaugurated

Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav inaugurated the first National Conference on Sustainable Coastal Management in India in Bhubaneswar on 10 September.

  • The conference focused on increasing the climate resilience of India's coastal communities and discussing steps to be taken towards coastal management.

Organiser of the Conference :

  • The conference is being organised by the Green Climate Fund Supported Project - Enhancing Climate Resilience of India's Coastal Communities.

The objective of the Conference :

  • Bringing officials from all 13 coastal states of India under one roof to focus on three interrelated themes of coastal and marine biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation and coastal pollution.

Enhancing climate resilience of India’s coastal communities :

  • 'Enhancing the Climate Resilience of India's Coastal Communities' (2019-2024) is a 6-year project implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change with the support of UNDP.

  • The project aims to enhance the climate resilience of the most vulnerable populations, especially women, in the coastal regions of India.

  • The project is supported by the Green Climate Fund.

6. Gadkari calls for joint effort to achieve 5 trillion dollar economy goal

While addressing the 41st Meeting of the Transport Development Council at Bengaluru ,Karnataka  on 9 September 2022 ,Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari  said that both the Centre and the States should work together to transform the transport sector.

  • The 41st Transport Development Council meeting was held as part of the 3 day Manthan’ organised by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways at Bengaluru.
  • Gadkari said that” In the next five years, both the Centre and the states should work together to transform the transport sector of the country to become a five trillion-dollar economy,” 
  • In 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisioned making India a $5 trillion economy and global powerhouse by 2024-25.
  • He further said that efforts should be made to increase the automobile industry from 7.5 lakhs crore to 15 lakhs crore in the next 5 years enabling India as a top automobile manufacturing hub in the world.
  • Ministers of Transport from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Goa, Karnataka, Delhi and Tamil Nadu participated in the 41st Transport Development Council.

7. UP govt to provide a unique farm ID similar to Aadhar number to farmers

The Uttar Pradesh government will provide farmers with a unique Farm ID similar to Aadhaar number, which will be linked with Aadhaar so that they can get the benefits of all government schemes.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Aadhar verification will be used to implement this scheme in the coming days.
  • Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Durga Shankar Mishra said that with the help of Aadhar, the UP Government has given the benefit of the government schemes to maximum number of people.

  • He said that about Rs.8400 crore has been saved by the government through the use of Aadhaar verification.

  • About one crore 92 lakh school children are also getting benefits of various schemes through Aadhaar card verification.

  • He said that the Uttar Pradesh government will start giving family IDs very soon as work is already underway on this scheme.

  • The government will bring those families under the purview of this scheme, who are not getting any kind of benefit so far.

8. Prime Minister inaugurates the ‘Kalam no Carnival’ Book Fair virtually

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi addressed the inauguration ceremony of ‘Kalam no Carnival’ Book Fair organised by Nav Bharat Sahitya Mandir in Ahmedabad via video message on 8 September 2022.

The Prime Minister expressed delight that the tradition of the book fair started by 'Nav Bharat Sahitya Mandir' in Ahmedabad is getting richer with each passing year. 

The Prime Minister added that 'Kalam no Carnival' is a huge convention of books in Hindi, English and Gujarati languages.

9. Wildlife Board Approves New IAF Base in Ladakh

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will soon get a new base in Ladakh. 


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • According to a report published in the Economic Times on 8 September 2022, the Standing Committee of the National Board of Wildlife, which is led by Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav has approved the proposal.
  • The new base will be built on 500 hectares of land in the Changthang sanctuary area, right next to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
  • The need to boost the IAF presence in the region was felt after the rapid development of airfields and bunkers by the Chinese along the LAC in the area. 
  • In June 2020 there was a border clash in Ladakh, between the two armies leading to the death of 20 Indian soldiers and a number of Chinese soldiers.
  • The Changthang sanctuary area is a cold desert sanctuary in Leh district.  It is home to Tibetan wild Ass, Kiang and the rare black necked cranes.
  • Since it is a cold desert sanctuary, permission from the Environment ministry was necessary.

Air Force Airfield in the region :

  • The key air base of the IAF is in Leh. It has had Advanced Landing Ground facilities at Fukche since the 1960s besides Daulat Beg Oldie, Thoise and Nyoma.

About festival Onam

  • The festival of Onam is celebrated all over Kerala and by Malayalees living all over India.

  • It is celebrated in the first fortnight of September.

  • It is celebrated to honour the homecoming of the demon king Mahabali, who brought peace and prosperity to Kerala.

  • It is one of the three major festivals of Kerala, celebrated during the month of Chingam (the first month in the Malayalam calendar).

  • The other two major festivals of Kerala are Vishu and Thiruvathira.

  • The 10-day harvest festival begins at Atham (the first day of Onam) and ends on Thiruvonam (the last day).

  • This harvest festival includes festivities such as boat races, tiger dances, elaborate flower arrangements and a mask dance.
