1. India’s basketball legend Abbas Moontasir dead

Former India basketball captain and Arjuna awardee Ghulam Abbas Muntasir passed away on November 16, 2022 in Mumbai after prolonged illness. He was 80.
Important facts
He was born in Mumbai in 1942. He started playing in Nagpada by the American missionaries, later he started getting inclined towards basketball.
His basketball debut came in 1960 in an exhibition game against Australia.
He captained the national team in the 1969 and 1975 Asian Basketball Championships in Bangkok.
He was part of the Indian team at the 1970 Asian Games, which finished sixth after topping a group that also contained China, Thailand and Malaysia.
In the same year, Muntasir was selected in the Asian All-Star team and received the Arjuna Award, the first basketball player to receive this honour.
He was suspended for three years due to constant bickering with referees and officials in the country.
He was also among the country's sports icons who shot for the 1987 film 'Freedom Run' to promote national integration.

Addressing the Global Media Congress Apurva Chandra said that India is a country with a traditional media comprising 897 television channels, of which over 350 were news channels, and over 80 thousand newspapers coming out in various languages.

3. WhatsApp India head Abhijit Bose steps down

WhatsApp India chief Abhijit Bose and Meta's public policy chief Rajeev Agarwal resigned from their posts on November 16, 2022.
Important facts
Bose was previously the co-founder of payments firm Ezetap before joining WhatApp as its India head.
Bose was appointed in 2018 as the first country head for WhatsApp in any country.
Shivnath Thukral, Director of WhatsApp Public Policy in India, has now been made Director, Public Policy for all Meta brands in India.
In the past, tech giant Meta had laid off 11,000 of its employees, citing cost efficiency cuts behind it.
Ajit Mohan, the head of Meta in India, resigned from his post earlier this month. He was appointed as the President of Asia-Pacific at Snap.
WhatsApp is the most popular messaging platform in India, which is owned by Facebook since February, 2014.

4. Vivek Joshi appointed on the SBI Board as Government of India nominee

The Union Ministry of Finance has nominated Vivek Joshi as a Director to the Board of State Bank of India (SBI) on 15 November 2022. He will take the place of Sanjay Malhotra as the government nominee.

5. Government has extended the term of DGCI V G Somani again by three months

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has again extended the term of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani by another three months. The extension will come into effect from 15 November 2022.
He was earlier given an extension in August this year for three months. His extended term was to expire on 15 November 2022.
Dr Venugopal Girdharilal Somani played a key role in the approval of covid-19 vaccine, approval of lifesaving drugs and ensuring its quality in combating the covid-19 pandemic.

6. Telugu film superstar Krishna Garu passes away

Veteran actor Ghattamaneni Krishna, famous as Krishna Garu and known in the Telugu film industry as ‘superstar, died on 15 November 2022 in Hyderabad. He was 80 years old.
He was the father of the Telugu film superstar Mahesh Babu. He starred in over 350 movies during his long career in the film industry. His first film was Thene Manasulu released in 1965. In 2009, he received the Padma Bhushan.

Union Minister of State for Culture & Parliamentary Affairs Ajun Ram Meghwal inaugurated an international travelling exhibition “Vaccines Injecting Hope” at the National Science Center, New Delhi on 15 November 2022.
The exhibition “Vaccines Injecting Hope” has been organised by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) and Science Museum Group, London.
The exhibition tells the story of the global effort to develop covid vaccine started on 15 November 2022 and will tour five cities of Delhi, Nagpur, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata till September 2025 and is expected to reach out to more than 2 million people.
The exhibition has sections on ‘The Arrival of New Virus’, ‘Designing a New Vaccine’, ‘Trials, Results and Approvals’, ‘Scaling Up and Mass Production’, ‘Vaccine Rollout’, ‘Living with COVID’.
Novel Coronavirus or Covid-19

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award
- It is the highest sporting award for a sports person in India. The Khel Ratna is awarded for outstanding performances in sports for over a period of four years.
- It was earlier called as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and its name was changed to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021.
- The award was started in 1991 -92 and the first sportsperson to be awarded was the legendary Chess player Vishwanathan Anand.
- Pistol shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won the first-ever individual gold medal for India at the Olympics at Beijing 2008, is the youngest sportsperson to win the Khel Ratna. He was 18 years old when he got the award.
- Karnam Malleswari was the first Indian woman to receive the Khel Ratna in 1994-95.
Arjuna Award
It was instituted in 1961. It is given to sportspersons for consistent good performance over a period of four years.
Hockey player Anna Lumsden was the first woman to win the Arjuna Award. She was conferred the prize in 1961.
Dronacharya Award for Coaches
- It is officially called the Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games, for coaches who help athletes achieve excellence over a period of four years.
- The Dronacharya Award was first given in 1985, and the first Dronacharya Award winner was wrestling Coach Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat.
- The first woman to win the Dronacharya award was athletics coach Renu Kohli in 2002.
Dronacharya Lifetime award
- It was instituted in 2011.
- It is given to coaches who have helped sportspersons achieve excellence over a period of 20 years or more.
- The first recipient(s) of the Dronacharya (Lifetime) Award were athletics coach Kuntal Roy and hockey coach Rajinder Singh in 2011.
Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime achievement
It was instituted in 2002. It is given to a sports person for good performance and contribution towards the promotion of sports in an individual capacity.
The first recipients of the Major Dhyan Chand Award were Olympian boxer Shahuraj Birajdar, Indian men’s hockey team player Ashok Diwan and Aparna Ghosh, an accomplished player and coach with the Indian women’s basketball team.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy
- It is the oldest National Sports Awards in India which was instituted in 1956–1957.
- The award is given to the University for Top Performance in inter-university tournaments over the last one year.
- Bombay University was the first winner of the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy.
- Guru Nanak Dev University from Amritsar, Punjab has won it a record 23 times.
Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar
It was instituted in 2009 .It is awarded to organisations or corporates (both private and public) and individuals for playing a role in the area of sports promotion and development over the last three years.
Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award
It was set up in 1994 in the memory of Tenzing Norgay. He is an Indian of Nepali origin who along with a New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary scaled Mount Everest on 29 May 1953.
The award is given in adventure sports like mountaineering, skydiving, and open water swimming.
9. Mehran Karimi Nasseri who lived in Paris airport for 18 years dies

The 77-year-old Iranian refugee Mehran Karimi Nasseri, whose ordeal inspired the 2004 movie “The Terminal” starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones died on 13 November 2022, inside the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, where he had previously lived for 18 years.
Mehran Karimi Nasseri died around noon local time of a heart attack, a spokesperson for the Paris airport authority said on 14 November 2022.IR
Nasseri was born in 1945 in the Iranian province of Khuzestan. He left Iran in 1970’s to search for his British mothers. He was expelled from many European countries including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany for not having the correct immigration documents.
In 1988, French authorities stopped him at the Paris airport as he tried to pass through without identity papers. Caught in an immigration trap, he soon set up a makeshift home of his own in the airport and lived for many years in Terminal 1 of Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport.
He was offered a residence permit by France but was unable to adjust to life outside the airport. He eventually came back to the Airport’s Terminal 2F and died later.
10. Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande embarks on 4-day official visit to France

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj Pande left on a 4 day (14-17 November) official visit to France on 14 November 2022. General Pande will hold a meeting with his French counterparts and senior military leadership with the aim to strengthen defence ties between the two nations.
His visit is aimed to give impetus to the ever growing Indo-French defence ties. During his visit he will lay a wreath at Neuve Chapelle Indian Memorial, which commemorates the sacrifices of 4,742 Indian soldiers during the First World War.
Earlier on November 7, Army Chief General Manoj Pande held a meeting with French Chief of Staff of Air and Space Force, General Stephane Mille. During the meeting, both sides discussed various aspects of defence cooperation between France and India.
The seventh edition of the bilateral exercise between the Indian Air Force and the French Air and Space Force,' Exercise Garuda-VII' concluded at Air Force Station in Jodhpur on 12 November 2022.
General Manoj Pande is the 29th Chief of Army Staff in India .He is the first officer from the Corps of Engineers to become the Chief of Army.
