1. India beats Indonesia 3-0 to win maiden Thomas Cup title

India's men's badminton team lifted the Thomas Cup title for the first time with a commanding 3-0 win over Indonesia on 15th May. 

  • India won three straight matches, two men’s singles and a men’s doubles match to seal the championship.

  • With this win, India has become the sixth country to win the title.

  • India's Kidambi Srikanth defeated Indonesia's Leonardus Jonatan Christie in Thomas Cup Final 2022 by  21-15, 23-21, held in Bangkok.

  • It is a historic triumph that will enhance the country's status in the sport.

  • Thomas Cup is an international badminton competition.

  • The 16 teams that compete for the prestigious title. 

  • All the 16 teams represent member nations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

  • The championship was started by a great English badminton player, Sir George Alan Thomas, who was inspired by the Davis Cup of Tennis and the World Cup of Football.

  • The first tournament was held in 1948–1949.

  • After 1982, it was conducted every two years. 

  • The three teams with the most titles in the championship are Indonesia, China, and Malaysia with 14, 10, and 5 titles, respectively.

2. Tasnim Mir wins Iran Fajr International Challenges 2022

Tasnim Mir won the 30th Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge 2022 title by defeating Yulia Yosephine Susanto of Indonesia in the final .

  • Tasnim Mir of Gujarat became the first Indian girl to become  Junior girls World no.1 badminton player in January 2022.

  • It was her first title at  the senior level of the BWF(Badminton World Federation) badminton championship.

3. Odisha open Badminton Championship 2022

For the first time, Odisha hosted a BWF(Badminton World Federation ) 100  tournament . It was held from 25-30 January 2022 at the Jawaharlal Nehru  Indoor stadium Cuttack, Odisha .


Winners  of the Odisha open 2022:

Male singles:

Kiran George of India defeated  Priyanshu Rajawat of India .

Female Singles:

Unnati Hooda defeated Smit Toshniwal (both are Indians).

Mens Double:

Nur Mohammed Ayub and Lim Khim Wah  (both Malaysian) defeated Ravikrishnan PS and Shankar Prasad Udaykumar(both Indian).

Women’s Double:

Sanyogita Ghorpade and Shruti Mishra (both are Indians )  defeated Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly (both are Indians).

Mixed Doubles:

Arjun M.R and Treesa Jolly(both are Indian)  defeated Sachin Dias and Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa(both are Sri Lankan).

4. P.V. Sindhu wins Syed Modi International Badminton Title

P. V. Sindhu, without a Badminton World Federation (BWF) title since the world crown in 2019, ended the title drought by winning Syed Modi International Badminton title.

  • $ 150,000 Syed Modi International Badminton Championships is an international badminton tournament, which is held annually in India.      
  • World No.7 Sindhu defeated Malvika Bansod  of India in the final match held in Lucknow at the Baba Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium.
  • The all-French men’s final was a non-starter after Arnaud Merkle tested positive for Covid.Since the other finalist,compatriot Lucas Claerbout was also his roommate,he was also withdrawn from the final for being a primary contact of Merkle.
  • As per the BWF guidelines,the final was declared a ’ No match.’The finalist will get the ranking points and the prize money assigned for reaching the final.

5. Lakshya Sen wins his maiden Indian Open Title

India’s Lakshya Sen secured his maiden Super 500 title by winning the Yonex-Sunrise India Open with a stunning straight-game victory over reigning world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the men’s singles final on 16th January 2022.

  • Meanwhile, in the doubles final, the top doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty scripted a stunning straight-game win over three-time world champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia to become the first men’s team from the country to win the Yonex-Sunrise India Open.
  • Busanan Ongbamrunghphan of Thailand won the Women's Singles title.

The BCCI, cricket selection  committee has appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI side till 2023 World Cup to be held in India  and was made the Vice-Captain of the Test team removing Ajinkya Rahane as the Test team Vice-Captaincy.

7. India A wins 2021–22 BCCI Senior Women's Challenger Trophy Title

  • It was held at the Mulapadu Cricket Complex in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

8. Manipur Claims 26th Senior Women’s National Football Championship title

Manipur defeated Railways 2-1 on penalties in the final of 26th Senior Women's National Football Championship held at EMS Corporation Stadium, Kozhikode, Kerala. The league consisted of 32 teams for the 2021-22 season.
