1. Indian weightlifter Achinta Shuli lifts record 313 kg to win gold medal in Commonwealth Games

Indian young player and weightlifter Achinta Shuli has made the entire nation proud by winning a gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Important facts

  • This is India's third gold medal in the current Games.

  • Earlier, Mirabai Chanu had won a gold medal in the 49kg event.

  • 19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga, competing in the 67kg category, also lifted gold medals in snatch and clean and jerk by lifting a total of 300kg.

  • Shuli, who comes from West Bengal, created a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting a total of 313 kg.

2. India to host Women's ODI World Cup in 2025

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), India will host the ICC Women's ODI World Cup for the year 2025.

Important facts

  • The Council has selected four countries to host the ICC Women's World Cup from 2024 to 2027.

  • These countries are India, Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka.

  • Bangladesh will host the Women's T20 World Cup competition in the year 2024.

  • The 2026 edition of the Women's T20 World Cup will be held in England.

  • Sri Lanka will host the 2027 Women's T20 Champions Trophy but it will depend on whether they qualify for the competition.

  • The host countries were selected through a bidding process conducted under the supervision of a subcommittee of the ICC Board.

  • The committee also included Sourav Ganguly, President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

3. PV Sindhu named India's flagbearer for Commonwealth Games 2022 Opening Ceremony

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu as the flag-bearer of Team India at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

  • Manpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian hockey team that won the bronze medal in Tokyo 2020, has also been chosen as the flag bearer of India along with PV Sindhu.

  • This is the second time that PV Sindhu will be India's flag-bearer at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony; she also held the Indian flag at the Gold Coast 2018 edition.

  • Manpreet Singh was one of the two flag bearers of India at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.

  • Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain were the other two candidates being considered for the flag bearer.

  • India is becoming a part of these games for the 18th time.

  • India has so far won 181 gold, 173 silver and 149 bronze medals in these games.

  • India has been among the top five countries in terms of medals in each consecutive Commonwealth Games since the 2002 Manchester Games.

  • From 1930 to 1950 these games were called the British Empire Games.

4. PM Modi inaugurate 44th Chess Olympiad-2022 at JLN Indoor Stadium in Chennai

  • This championship has been organised since 1927.

  • FIDE is an international organisation based in Switzerland that links various national chess federations and serves as the governing body of international chess competition.

  • It was founded in Paris, France, on July 20, 1924.

  • In 1999, FIDE was recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

6. 1st Khelo India Fencing Women’s League started at Talkatora Indoor Stadium

The first Khelo India Fencing Women's League was started on 25 July 2022 at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi.

Important facts

  • The first of its kind national fencing competition for women will be held in three phases till July 29.

  • Phases 1 and 2 are scheduled in New Delhi, while the final phase will be held in Patiala.

  • More than 300 women cadets from 20 states will participate in the competition in junior (under-17), junior (under-20) and senior categories.

  • The Khelo India Women's Fencing League is an open national level ranking tournament for women.

  • Fencers registered with the Fencing Association of India (FAI) portal and nominated by their respective State Associations are also participating.

  • A total of Rs 1.54 crore has been sanctioned by the Sports Authority of India for this event. The prize money for each phase has been fixed at Rs 17.10 lakh.

  • Tokyo Olympian and Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) athlete Bhavani Devi will be the league's participant in the senior category event.

  • Bhavani Devi will represent Tamil Nadu.

  • Also other TOPS athletes participating in the league are Shreya Gupta (J&K), Vedika Khushi (Chhattisgarh), Tanishaa Khatri (Haryana) AP and Sheetal Dalal (Haryana).

India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has won a silver medal in the World Athletics Championships held in Eugene, USA.

  • He has become the first Indian male athlete to win a medal in the history of this tournament. He is also the first Indian to win a silver medal in this competition.

  • Prior to this, veteran athlete Anju Bobby George had won a historic bronze medal in 2003.

8. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma unveils 131st Durand Cup trophy

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister, Assam, unveiled the three Durand Cup trophies in a glittering ceremony at Guwahati on 21st July. 

Important facts

  • Three trophies of the 134-year-old Durand Cup, Asia's oldest football tournament, were unveiled. 

  • The tournament will be held for the first time in Assam's Guwahati from August 17 to September 4.

  • As part of the trophy tour involving five cities, Guwahati, the venue of 10 Group D games, was chosen as the first stop.

  • It will see participation of 20 teams from across the country including 11 ISL teams.

  • The matches of the tournament will be held at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.

  • Apart from Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal and Kishor Bharati Kridangan in Kolkata in West Bengal and Naihati Stadium in North 24-Parganas district will host the matches.

  • The three trophies, the Durand Cup (a rolling trophy and the original prize), the Shimla Trophy (a rolling trophy and first given by the residents of Shimla in 1904) and the President’s Cup (for permanent keep and first presented by Dr Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President in 1956) are on a five-city tour.

  • It was flagged off from Kolkata on July 19, 2022 and will be the first time the host will leave for Imphal in Manipur after being in Guwahati for two days.

131st Durand Cup

  • There will be a total of 47 games in this tournament, with both Guwahati and Imphal hosting 10-games of group C and group D each.

  • All the seven knockout games will be held at three venues in West Bengal.

  • The inaugural pool matches will begin from 16 August at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Kreerangan (VYBK) Stadium in Kolkata.

  • The matches will be held on August 17 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati and on August 18 at the Khuman Lampakh Stadium in Imphal.

  • The tournament will culminate with the Grand Finale to be held at VYBK on 18 September 2022.

About Durand Cup

  • The tournament was started in 1888 under the leadership of Sir Henry Durand, a renowned Indian civil servant and Foreign Secretary of India.

  • It was first held in Shimla.

  • The most successful teams are East Bengal and Mohun Bagan with 16 wins each.

  • BSF comes in third place with 7 wins.
