1. Asia Cup Cricket 2022 will be held in Sri Lanka

At the annual Asian Cricket Council meeting held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 19 March 2022, decided that the Asia Cup 2022 (T20 Format) will be held in Sri Lanka from August 27-September 11 2022.

  • All five Test teams - hosts Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh - will take part in the tournament while one more Asian side will be decided after a qualifying tournament which will be held from 20 August 2022.

  • The Asia Cup, which usually alternates between ODI and T20I formats, was last played in 2018 and won by India. 

  • The next edition in 2020 was postponed due to covid -19 and it will finally be held in 2022 in Sri Lanka.

  •  Pakistan is scheduled to host the Asian Championship in 2023.

  • Defending champions India are the most successful team in Asia Cup, winning it seven times including the lone T20I edition in 2016 while Sri Lanka have won the competition five times.

2. Jay Shah term as ACC president extended by One year

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah's tenure as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was extended by one more year  till 2024 ,at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting held in Colombo on 19 March 2022.

  • Shah had taken over as the president of the ACC in January last year from Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan, making him the youngest administrator to be re-appointed as ACC president.

3. Lakshya Sen settles for silver in the All England Badminton open

Lakshya Sen lost the final of the All England Badminton championship 2022  to Viktor Axelsen of Denmark on 20 March 2022.   The tournament was held in the English city of Birmingham .The All England is one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments in the world. 

  • So far only two Indians have won the tournament , Prakash Padukone in 1983 and Pullela Gopichand in 2000.

Female singles  title 

  • Akane Yamguchi of Japan won the gold medal  by defeating An Seyoung of South Korea in the finals.

Women's Doubles 

  • Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida (both are Japanese ) defeated Zhang shu xian and Zheng Yu (both are Chinese ) in the final and won the Gold Medal .

  • The Bronze medal was won by the Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela  by defeating the South Korean pair of  Jeong Na Eun and Kim Hye Jeong .

Mens Double titles 

  •  The Indonesian pair of  Muhammad Shohib Fikri and Bagas Mualana  defeated the Indonesian pair of Mohamad Ahsan and Hendra Satiwan to win the gold medal .

Mixed Doubles 

  • The  Japanese pair of  Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higasano  defeated the Chinese pair of Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping to win the gold medal .

All England Badminton Championship

  • It is the world’s oldest badminton championship which was started in 1889 in England .

  • It was considered unofficially as the world badminton title until 1977 . After that the International Badminton Federation started its own world championship in 1978. 

  • No Indian female player  has ever won the women's single title at the All England championships .

4. India Win 39 Medals at Asian Youth and Junior Boxing Championships 2022

Indian junior and youth boxers won a total 39 medals at the recently held ASBC Asian Youth and Junior Boxing Championships 2022 in Amman, capital of  Jordan. The championships ended on 16 March 2022.

The tournament saw  the participation of both boys and girls in the youth and junior category. Total  352 boxers from 21 countries participated in the event.

The Indian boxers won 15 gold, 10 silver, and 14 bronze  at the event .

Junior section 

  •  In the junior section the Indian team won 21 medals including eight gold, seven silver and six bronze.

India came second after Uzbekistan which won 23 medals

In the youth section the Indian team won 18 medals including seven gold, three silver and eight bronze medals and came third behind Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

  • The ASBC Asian Youth and Junior Boxing Championships 2021 was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

5. Anirban Lahiri makes history in Golf

Anirban Lahiri became the first Indian golfer to finish runner-up in the Players Championship at Florida, United States. The PGA (Professional Golf Association) Players Championship title was won by the Australian golfer, Cameron Smith.

Anirban Lahiri won $2.18 million prize money. His ranking jumped to a career best 89 in the world.

The only Indian who has won a PGA title is Arjun Atwal,who won the 2010 Wyndham Championship held in the United States of America.

6. Shreyas Iyer is the ICC player of the February 2022

7. India wins test series against Sri Lanka 2-0

India comfortably won the two test series against the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team. The Indian team was captained by Rohit Sharma and Dimuth Karunaratne was the captain of the Sri Lankan side.

The 2-0 series win followed the 3-0 sweep of the T20I series by India.

First Test match 

It was played  at the Punjab Cricket Association cricket stadium at Mohali, Chandigarh. The stadium is also called IS Bindra stadium.

It was played from March 4-6 2022

It was won by India by 222 runs.

Second Test Match 

It was a Day/Night test match held from 12-14 March 2022.

8. India wins 16th Asian junior women's handball championship gold

India won gold in the Asian junior women’s handball championship defeating Thailand in their last match in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 14 March 2022. 

  • The tournament was played on a round robin basis, where the team which earned the highest points was declared the winner.

  • Iranian team came second and Kazakhstan came third. 

  • The 16th edition of the Asian junior women’s handball championship was held from 7 to 14 March 2022.

  • The Indian team has also qualified for the World Junior women’s handball championship to be held in Slovenia in June-July 2022.

  • The Asian junior women’s handball championship is held every two years.

9. Rishab Pant scores India’s fastest fifty in Test Match

The wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant made history by scoring the  fastest half-century by an Indian cricketer in the history of Tests during Day 2 of the Bengaluru Test against the Sri Lankans on 13 March 2022.

  • He scored his fifty in 28 balls beating the record of Kapil Dev who scored 50 runs in 30 balls against Pakistan in the Karachi test in 1982. He was eventually out at the score of 50.

  • The world record is held by Pakistani batsmen Misbah-ul who scored 50 runs in a test match against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2014 in 21 balls.

10. Lakshya Sen loses the German open Badminton final

World Championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen lost to Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the  final of the German Open Super 300 badminton tournament on 13 March 2022. 

The German open was held in the German city of Mulheim.

Lakshya Sen is ranked 12th in the world while the Thailand player Kunlavut Vitidsarn is ranked 20th in the world.
