1. ICC Awards 2021 announced

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced its 2021  awards winners. The performance of the players and umpires in the 2021 year has been taken into account.

2. P.V. Sindhu wins Syed Modi International Badminton Title

P. V. Sindhu, without a Badminton World Federation (BWF) title since the world crown in 2019, ended the title drought by winning Syed Modi International Badminton title.

  • $ 150,000 Syed Modi International Badminton Championships is an international badminton tournament, which is held annually in India.      
  • World No.7 Sindhu defeated Malvika Bansod  of India in the final match held in Lucknow at the Baba Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium.
  • The all-French men’s final was a non-starter after Arnaud Merkle tested positive for Covid.Since the other finalist,compatriot Lucas Claerbout was also his roommate,he was also withdrawn from the final for being a primary contact of Merkle.
  • As per the BWF guidelines,the final was declared a ’ No match.’The finalist will get the ranking points and the prize money assigned for reaching the final.

3. Three Indians in ICC Test Team of the Year

In the recently released ICC Test Team of the Year, Rohit Sharma features as the opener, Rishabh Pant as wicketkeeper and R. Ashwin as the only specialist spinner.

  • No Indian player is included in the men’s ODI XI.
  • Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami feature in the women’s ODI XI.

4. Smriti Mandhana only Indian in the ICC T-20 team

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on 19th January 2022 named the Women's T20I Team of the Year (2021), and India opening batter Smriti Mandana has been named in the XI.

  • With 255 runs at an average of 31.87, Smriti was India’s highest scorer in the format in 2021.
  • It is also the third time Smriti has made the cut for the T20I team of the year after 2018 (opener) and 2019 (number three).

5. First Indian Male Player to Play in BBL

Former Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Unmukt Chand became the first Indian male cricketer to play in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).

  • He made his debut for Melbourne Renegades against Hobart Hurricanes.
  • Chand, a former India A skipper, had never played for the Indian senior team but was part of three IPL franchises — Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals. 

Meanwhile, eight Indians were selected in the last edition of the Women’s Big Bash League.

  • T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur and the second leading run-scorer in the inaugural edition of The Hundred, Jemimah Rodrigues have been signed by Melbourne Renegades.
  • The ICC T20I top-ranked batter, Shafali Verma was signed by Sydney Sixers along with bowler Radha Yadav.
  • Opener Smriti Mandhana, the one who became India’s first woman to score a century in the Pink Ball Test, and her teammate all-rounder Deepti Sharma were signed by Sydney Thunder.
  • Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh was signed by Hobart Hurricanes.
  • The eighth and the last overseas player is bowler Poonam Yadav who was signed by Brisbane Heat.

6. REAL MADRID WIN SPANISH SUPER CUP

Real Madrid football club of Spain won the 38th edition of the Spanish Super Cup by beating Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on 16 January 2022  at the King Fahd Stadium,Riyadh, in Saudi Arabia.

  • The Spanish Super cup is played between four teams who are the winners and runners up  in the Copa del Rey and La Liga tournament of Spain .

7. NO FRENCH OPEN FOR UNVACCINATED

The French parliament on 16 January 2022 approved a new vaccine law, which requires anyone wanting to enter sports arenas and other public venues to have been vaccinated against coronavirus. French Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu said ‘’this law applies to everyone,to volunteers and to the elite sportspeople, including those coming from abroad, until further notice”.

  • Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic could miss the French Open, another grand slam tennis tournament after being out of Australian Open as he is not vaccinated against coronavirus.

9. Lakshya Sen wins his maiden Indian Open Title

India’s Lakshya Sen secured his maiden Super 500 title by winning the Yonex-Sunrise India Open with a stunning straight-game victory over reigning world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the men’s singles final on 16th January 2022.

  • Meanwhile, in the doubles final, the top doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty scripted a stunning straight-game win over three-time world champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia to become the first men’s team from the country to win the Yonex-Sunrise India Open.
  • Busanan Ongbamrunghphan of Thailand won the Women's Singles title.

The Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2022 was held from 11th to 16th January 2022 at the K. D. Jadhav Indoor Hall in Delhi.

  • The 2022 India Open was the first tournament of the 2022 BWF World Tour and was part of the India Open championships, which had been held since 1973.

10. Australia dominated the Ashes and asserted its supremacy

Australia underlined its Ashes supremacy by crushing England’s hopes through a 4­-0 series triumph.

The series was played at five venues across Australia from 8 December 2021 to 18 January 2022

Man­ of ­the Series: Travis Head of Australia.

The Australian team captain was Pat Cummins and the England team captain was Joe Root.

The Ashes is a 5 match Test cricket series played between England and Australia hosted in turn by the two nations. 

The term ‘’Ashes’’ originated in a satirical obituary published in a British newspaper, “The Sporting Times”, immediately after Australia's 1882 victory at The Oval, its first Test win on English soil. 

There have been 72 Ashes series: Australia have won 34, England have won 32 and six series have been drawn.
