1. R Pragyanand won the prestigious Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament

16-year-old chess player R Pragyanand has won the prestigious "Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament" in Reykjavik, Iceland.

  • The final of this tournament was played between two Indian players, in which R Pragyanand won the competition by defeating compatriot GM D Gukesh in the final round.

  • The Indian youngster finished at the top of the Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament by scoring 7.5 points out of a total of 9 points and was ahead by 0.5 points (half a point).

  • The first Reykjavik Open chess tournament winner was Abhijit Gupta (2016) followed by Bhaskaran Adhiban who won the title in the 33rd Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament 2018.

2. Rohit Sharma became the second Indian and seventh batsman in the world to score ten thousand runs in T20 cricket.

In the 23rd match of the 15th season of the Indian Premier League or IPL, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has achieved the feat of scoring 10000 T20 runs in the match against Punjab Kings.

  • He is the second Indian batsman after Virat Kohli to achieve this feat and the seventh batsman in the world.

  • Right-handed batsman Rohit Sharma is the seventh batsman in the world who has scored 10,000 runs in T20 cricket.

  • But Chris Gayle has achieved the feat of scoring 10000 T20 runs in the shortest innings. This can be seen in the following table:

3. 7th FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2022 to be hosted by Bhubaneswar, Goa and Navi Mumbai

Bhubaneswar, Goa and Navi Mumbai have been selected as the host of FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2022.

4. Sania and Hardeka pair lose in Charleston Open final

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Lucy Hradeka's impressive campaign at the Charleston Open tennis tournament ended with a loss in the final.

  • The unseeded pair of Sania and Hradecka lost 2-6, 6-4, 7-10 in one hour and 24 minutes to fourth seeded Poland's Andreja Klepac and Magda Linet of Slovenia in the final played on 10 April.

  • Sania and Hradeka had previously performed brilliantly in this WTA 500 event.

  • She had made a place in the women's doubles final after defeating top seeded pair of Zhang Shuai and Caroline Dolehide in the semi-finals.

  • India's most successful tennis player Sania has already announced that this will be her last season in tennis.

5. First Khelo India National Ranking Women's Archery Tournament organised in Jamshedpur

TATA Archery Academy, Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) is set to host the first phase of the tournament on April 12 and 13. The Sports Authority of India has approved a total amount of Rs 75 Lakh to host the Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament over six phases.

  • The tournament will be held across the Recurve and Compound events in the Senior, Junior and Cadet Categories, and will be conducted as per the World Archery Rules.

  • The Archery Association of India (AAI), in collaboration with the Jharkhand Archery Association and TATA Steel, are organising the tournament.

  • Top 32 Recurve and Compound archers in Senior, Junior and Cadet categories have been selected to be a part of the tournament based on the recent concluded National Championships.

  • Archers who have also met the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) in any of the International Championship/Nationals/Selection Trials/Khelo India tournaments/State Championship/State Selection Trials in 2021-2022, have also made the cut.

  • The six Women’s National Ranking tournaments will be held every alternate month with the final phase scheduled for December 2022.

  • The cumulative points of the 5 phases shall be calculated to arrive at the ranking of the top 16 archers for the final phase in December wherein the top 16 archers shall be given cash awards, amounting to a total of Rs 37.5 Lakh.

  • The National Ranking Women Archery Tournament is yet another endeavour by the Khelo India’s Sports for Women component, which takes the most necessary steps to power in more female participation in a wide array of sports competitions.

  • The support extends to not only giving grants but also helping in the proper organization and execution of the events.

  • Past competitions include the U-17 Khelo India Football League and the Khelo India Women’s Hockey League (Under 21), held across three phases of the tournament in New Delhi and Lucknow.

  • The Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament, now, will provide more competition and exposures at domestic levels for second, third and fourth lines of Archers, in line with Women Empowerment.

6. India won silver for the first time in the World Bridge Championship

India managed to secure a silver medal for the first time in the D'Orsi Trophy Senior Team Championships at the 45th World Bridge Championships held in Italy.

  • In the match for the gold medal, the Indian team lost to Poland by 194-239 points.

  • India's senior team - comprising Ashok Goel, Anil Padhe, Rajesh Dalal, Sukamal Das, Subroto Saha and R Krishnan - won India's first World Bridge Championship silver medal in this championship.

7. Tamil Nadu won the 71st Senior National Basketball Championship

Tamil Nadu defeated defending champions Punjab 87-69 to clinch the men's title in the final of the 71st Senior National Basketball Championship here on 10 April 2022.

  • In the women's section, Railways won the title by defeating Telangana 131-82 with Poonam Chaturvedi's 26 points.

  • In the men's section, Karnataka defeated Railways 96-79 to finish third.

  • Tamil Nadu stood third in the women's category.

8. FIRST PLAYER TO BE RETIRED OUT IPL

The IPL 2022 match between Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday saw R Ashwin become the first batter in IPL history to be Retired Out.

During this, the umpire also tried to stop him but Ashwin stayed straight in the dugout. Taking a decision in the interest of the team, Ashwin declared himself retired so that the batsmen coming forward could score runs faster.

Retired out even before Ashwin: 

  • Only four batters, including Ashwin, have been dismissed Retired Out in T20s.

  • Shahid Afridi for Pakistanis (vs Northamptonshire), S Tobgay of Bhutan (against Maldives) and Sunzamul Islam of Cumilla Warriors (vs Chattogram Challengers) round up the list.

What is the rule?

  • According to MCC Law 25.4.3, “if a batter retires for any reason other than as in 25.4.2 (retires because of illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause), the innings of that batter may be resumed only with the consent of the opposing captain. 

  • “If for any reason his/ her innings is not resumed, that batter is to be recorded as ‘Retired out.’”

9. Kiran George and Anupama wins the Mens and Womens Title at the Polish Badminton Challenge

Indian shuttlers Kiran George and Anupama Upadhyaya won the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively at the Polish Open International Challenge badminton tournament in Arłamow, Poland.

  • George retained the title after defeating Chia Hao Lee of Chinese Taipei while Upadhyaya prevailed over fellow Indian Aditi Bhatt

  • For George, it was his second title of the season, following his triumph at the Odisha Open Super 100 tournament in January. He had also made it to the Indian team for the Asian badminton team championships in February.

  • In the women's singles, the 17-year-old Upadhyaya also claimed her second international title following her triumph at the Infosys Foundation International challenge last year.

10. Thailand’s Nitithorn Thippong wins inaugural DGC Open, India’s Ajeetesh Sandhu finishes second

Thailand’s Nitithorn Thippong defeated Ajeetesh Sandhu from India on the first play-off hole to claim the DGC Open on the Lodhi course at Delhi Golf Club.
