Indian Oil Corporation Finance Director Sandeep Kumar Gupta has been appointed as the head of GAIL (India) Limited, India's largest gas company.
Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has selected Sandeep Kumar Gupta for the post of Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL after interviewing 10 candidates.
He will succeed Manoj Jain who is going to retire on August 31.
The tenure of Sandeep Kumar Gupta will be till February 2026.
Gupta is also involved in the board of IOC Middle East FZE, Dubai and Indian Oil Petronas Pvt Ltd.

2. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan appointed as the fifth Chief Justice of Telangana High Court

At the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad, Governor Dr. Tamilasai Souradyarajan administered the oath of office to Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan as the Chief Justice of Telangana.
Ujal Bhuiyan is the fifth judge in the High Court of Telangana, which came into existence in 2019.
He replaced Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, who was transferred to the Delhi High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of Telangana High Court judge Justice Bhuiyan as Chief Justice.
He is also the Executive Chairman of Telangana State Legal Services Authority.
High Court - Organisation, Powers and Powers
High Courts have been constituted under Article 214, Chapter 5, Part 6 of the Constitution of India.
Under Article 216 of the Constitution of India, each High Court is composed of a Chief Justice and another Judge as may be determined by the President from time to time.
They are appointed by the President under Article 217.
The President may, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, transfer any Judge of a High Court to another High Court under Article 222.
Under Article 226 of the Constitution, the High Courts have wide powers to issue writs.
At present the number of High Courts in India is 25.
The first High Court of India was established in 1862 AD in Mumbai, while the 25th High Court of the country was established at Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh on January 1, 2019 AD as Telangana High Court.
At present, the salary of the Chief Justice of the High Court is ₹ 250000 per month and the salary of other judges of the High Court is ₹ 225000 per month.
The retirement age of judges of high courts has been increased from 62 years to 65 years by the 104th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2010.
3. Nitin Gupta appointed as Chairman of CBDT

IRS Nitin Gupta has been appointed as the new chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) by the Government of India.
Nitin Gupta will succeed Sangeeta Singh who was given the additional charge of CBDT chief after the retirement of JB Mohapatra on 30 April 2022.
Nitin Gupta is a 1986 batch IRS officer.
Nitin Gupta has been working as Member (Investigation) in CBDT since September 2021.
About Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)-
CBDT i.e. Central Board of Direct Taxes is a part of the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance.
CBDT is empowered by the Board of Revenue Act 1963.
CBDT provides necessary inputs for direct tax policies and schemes in India. Also it is responsible for the administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department.
All matters relating to direct taxes in India were entrusted to the Central Board of Direct Taxes with effect from 1 January 1964.
The CBDT is headed by the Chairman and can have six members, who are of the rank of Special Secretary.
It is the administrative body for the Income Tax Department.

Former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's seventh death anniversary is being celebrated.
About Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam -
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.
He served as the 11th President of India from the year 2002 to the year 2007.
Dr. Kalam joined the 'Indian Space Research Organisation' in 1962 and there he got the credit of making India's first indigenous satellite (SLV-llll) missile as a project director.
Abdul Kalam is considered the father of India's missile program.
The United Nations (UN) designated 15 October as World Students Day in the year 2010 to mark the birthday of Dr. Kalam.
Dr. Kalam was awarded honorary doctorates by 48 universities and institutions in India and abroad.
He also served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister from 1992 to 1999.
Dr. Kalam was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the year 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in the year 1990 and the 'Bharat Ratna' in the year 1997.
He died of cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015 during an event at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong.

5. SS Mundra appointed new chairman of BSE

Approval has been given for the appointment of SS Mundra as the new Chairman of BSE Limited. Mundra was earlier Public Interest Director in BSE.
SS Mundra will replace the current chairman of BSE, Justice Vikramjit Sen.

The Personnel Ministry has appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Dinkar Gupta as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Dinkar Gupta is a 1987 batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment as Director General of NIA till March 31, 2024, i.e. the date of his retirement.
Dinkar Gupta has held the post of DGP of Punjab.
Gupta was awarded two Police Gallantry Medals in 1992 and 1994.
He was also awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Services and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2010) by the President.
About National Investigation Agency (NIA)-
Its real name is National Investigation Agency, commonly known as National Investigation Agency. It was constituted under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008.
Realizing the need for a central agency to investigate terrorism and some other criminal acts after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, the NIA was formed.
It acts as the central counter-terrorism law enforcement agency.
The cases are assigned to the NIA by the Central Government in accordance with Section VI of the NIA Act, 2008.

7. Lisa Sthalekar appointed Federation of International Cricketers' Association president

Former Australian women's cricketer Lisa Sthalekar has been appointed as the President of the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA), becoming the first woman to become the President of FICA.
The decision to appoint Indian-origin Lisa was taken at a meeting of the Executive Committee of FICA in Neon, Switzerland.
Lisa Sthalekar will replace former England cricketer Vikram Solanki.
Former South African batsman Barry Richards, former West Indies all-rounder Jimmy Adams have also held this position.

Sthalekar played 8 Tests, 125 ODIs and 54 T20Is for Australia between 2001 and 2013.
Lisa has scored 416 runs in Tests, 2728 in ODIs and 769 runs in T20 matches while in bowling she has taken 23 wickets in Tests, 146 in ODIs and 60 wickets in T20Is.
Lisa became the first female cricketer to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in ODI cricket.
Last year, he was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.

Senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj has been appointed as India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
Ruchira Kamboj is a 1987 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS).
Presently, Ruchira Kamboj was serving as India's envoy to Bhutan.
Kamboj is the first woman ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan.
She will succeed TS Tirumurti as the Indian Ambassador to the United Nations.
Prior to this she has served as High Commissioner of India to South Africa and Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO.

Hamza Abdi Barre, 48, of the semi-autonomous state of Jubaland, replaced Mohamed Hussein Roble.

10. Ranjana Prakash Desai appointed as President of Press Council of India

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been nominated as Chairperson of the Press Council of India (PCI) on 17 June.
She will replace Justice (retd) CK Prasad who had vacated the post in November 2021.
Since then the office of the PCI President has been lying vacant.
Justice Desai has served as the chairman of the Delimitation Commission constituted for Jammu and Kashmir.
She has worked as a public prosecutor for the state of Maharashtra and as a judge on the Bombay High Court.
She was the Chairperson of the Indian Appellate Tribunal for Electricity after retiring from the Supreme Court.
About Press Council of India (PCI)
It was established under the PCI Act, 1978.
Its objective is to maintain the freedom of the press as well as to maintain and improve the standards of newspapers and news agencies in India.
The PCI consists of a chairman and 28 other members.
The chairman is elected by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and a member elected by the PCI.
The PCI does not have the power to review the functioning of electronic media such as radio, television and internet media.
