1. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus re-elected as WHO Director-General

Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), has been re-elected to this position for a second term of five years.

  • During the 75th World Health Assembly in Geneva, he was confirmed to be re-elected as Director General and his second term will start from 16 August 2022.

  • Earlier Dr. Tadros was named Director General of WHO on 23 May 2017.

  • His name was proposed by the Ethiopian government. He also served as the Minister of Health in the Ethiopian government.

  • WHO Director General's Appointment Process

  • According to the constitution of the World Health Organisation, all member countries propose names for the post of Director General. A time limit is fixed for this.

  • This time the election process started in April, 2021 after which the deadline for submission of proposal was fixed on April 23, 2021.

  • In this election process by the World Health Organization, secret ballot is conducted from all the member countries.

  • Any person can be appointed Director General of the World Health Organisation twice and his term is five years.

2. Captain Abhilasha Barak becomes first woman combat pilot in Army

On May 25, Captain Abhilasha Barak from Haryana became the first woman officer to join the Army Aviation Corps as a Combat Aviator.

  • She was awarded the prestigious wing along with 36 other Army pilots by the Director General of Army Aviation and the Colonel Commandant during a ceremony in Nashik.

6. 250th Birth Anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy

The Ministry of Culture is celebrating the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy from 22 May 2022 to 22 May 2023 under the aegis of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'.

  • The opening ceremony will be held at Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation, Salt Lake, Kolkata and Science City Auditorium, Kolkata.

  • During the event, a statue of Raja Ram Mohan Roy will be unveiled by the Minister of Culture, G Kishan Reddy at the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.

  • About Raja Ram Mohan Roy

  • Born - 22 May 1772 in a Hindu Brahmin family in Radhanagar village in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, Bengal. 

  • Gopal Krishna Gokhale called him the 'Father of Modern India'.

  • He was one of the pioneers of the Indian Renaissance. 

  • He was awarded the title of Raja by the Mughal Emperor Akbar II.

  • He opposed customs such as Sati, polygamy, child marriage, the rigidity of the caste system. 

  •  He formed Atmiya Sabha (Friendly Society) In 1814. It was for the religious reforms in the society. 

  • In 1828 he founded the Brahmo Samaj.

  • The Brahmo Samaj was a reformist movement of Hinduism that aimed to fight the social evils prevalent in the society.

  • As a result of hard work in fighting the practice of Sati, the Governor of Bengal Presidency Lord William Bentinck banned the practice of Sati in the year 1829.

7. SC sentences Navjot Singh Sidhu to one-year rigorous imprisonment in road rage case

The Supreme Court sentenced former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year's rigorous imprisonment in the 1988 road rage case in which Patiala resident Gurnam Singh died.

  • The order was pronounced by a bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice SK Kaul.

  • The Supreme Court had earlier allowed review of its May 2018 order acquitting former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu in the 34-year-old road rage case.

  • Sidhu was earlier let off with a fine of Rs 1,000.

  • Now he has been given the maximum possible punishment under section 323 of the IPC.

  • What was the case?

  • On 27 December 1988, Sidhu got into an argument with Patiala resident Gurnam Singh over parking.

  • Sidhu and his associate Rupinder Singh Sandhu allegedly dragged Gurnam Singh out of their car and hit him.

  • He later died in hospital.

  • In 1999, a sessions court in Patiala acquitted Sidhu and his associate for lack of evidence and benefit of doubt.

  • The Punjab and Haryana High Court convicted Sidhu of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in 2006 and sentenced him to three years in prison.

  • In 2018, Sidhu approached the Supreme Court, which quashed the High Court order and convicted Sidhu of causing hurt to a senior citizen.
