Indian-origin T Raja Kumar has taken over as the chairman of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the world's anti-terror financing agency.

  • He has over 35 years of experience in leadership and operations in Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs and Police Forces.

  • Raja Kumar will replace Dr. Marcus Pleier as head of the FATF and will hold the position for two years.

  • Raja Kumar has played a major role in the field of security with strategic partners such as Interpol and the UN.

  • Since July 2018, he has also been a member of the Steering Group, which advises the FATF President.

  • Since 1992, Singapore has been a member of the FATF.

  • Raja has been instrumental in directing Singapore's efforts to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

Indian Oil Corporation Finance Director Sandeep Kumar Gupta has been appointed as the head of GAIL (India) Limited, India's largest gas company.

  • Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has selected Sandeep Kumar Gupta for the post of Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL after interviewing 10 candidates.

  • He will succeed Manoj Jain who is going to retire on August 31.

  • The tenure of Sandeep Kumar Gupta will be till February 2026.

  • Gupta is also involved in the board of IOC Middle East FZE, Dubai and Indian Oil Petronas Pvt Ltd.

4. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan appointed as the fifth Chief Justice of Telangana High Court

At the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad, Governor Dr. Tamilasai Souradyarajan administered the oath of office to Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan as the Chief Justice of Telangana.

  • Ujal Bhuiyan is the fifth judge in the High Court of Telangana, which came into existence in 2019.

  • He replaced Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, who was transferred to the Delhi High Court.

  • The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of Telangana High Court judge Justice Bhuiyan as Chief Justice.

  • He is also the Executive Chairman of Telangana State Legal Services Authority.

  • High Court - Organisation, Powers and Powers

  • High Courts have been constituted under Article 214, Chapter 5, Part 6 of the Constitution of India.

  • Under Article 216 of the Constitution of India, each High Court is composed of a Chief Justice and another Judge as may be determined by the President from time to time.

  • They are appointed by the President under Article 217.

  • The President may, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, transfer any Judge of a High Court to another High Court under Article 222.

  • Under Article 226 of the Constitution, the High Courts have wide powers to issue writs.

  • At present the number of High Courts in India is 25.

  • The first High Court of India was established in 1862 AD in Mumbai, while the 25th High Court of the country was established at Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh on January 1, 2019 AD as Telangana High Court.

  • The retirement age of judges of high courts has been increased from 62 years to 65 years by the 104th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2010.

  • Nitin Gupta will succeed Sangeeta Singh who was given the additional charge of CBDT chief after the retirement of JB Mohapatra on 30 April 2022.

  • Nitin Gupta is a 1986 batch IRS officer.

  • Nitin Gupta has been working as Member (Investigation) in CBDT since September 2021.

  • About Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)-

  • CBDT i.e. Central Board of Direct Taxes is a part of the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance.

  • CBDT is empowered by the Board of Revenue Act 1963.

  • CBDT provides necessary inputs for direct tax policies and schemes in India. Also it is responsible for the administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department.

  • All matters relating to direct taxes in India were entrusted to the Central Board of Direct Taxes with effect from 1 January 1964.

  • The CBDT is headed by the Chairman and can have six members, who are of the rank of Special Secretary.

  • Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.

  • Dr. Kalam joined the 'Indian Space Research Organisation' in 1962 and there he got the credit of making India's first indigenous satellite (SLV-llll) missile as a project director.

  • Abdul Kalam is considered the father of India's missile program.

  • The United Nations (UN) designated 15 October as World Students Day in the year 2010 to mark the birthday of Dr. Kalam.

  • Dr. Kalam was awarded honorary doctorates by 48 universities and institutions in India and abroad.

  • He also served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister from 1992 to 1999.

  • Dr. Kalam was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the year 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in the year 1990 and the 'Bharat Ratna' in the year 1997.

The Personnel Ministry has appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Dinkar Gupta as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

  • Dinkar Gupta is a 1987 batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre.

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment as Director General of NIA till March 31, 2024, i.e. the date of his retirement.

  • Dinkar Gupta has held the post of DGP of Punjab.

  • Gupta was awarded two Police Gallantry Medals in 1992 and 1994.

  • He was also awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Services and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2010) by the President.

  • About National Investigation Agency (NIA)-

  • Its real name is National Investigation Agency, commonly known as National Investigation Agency. It was constituted under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008.

  • Realizing the need for a central agency to investigate terrorism and some other criminal acts after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, the NIA was formed.
