1. 5G may contribute up to 2% to India GDP by 2030: NASSCOM Report

According to a report by National Association of Software and Services companies (NASSCOM) and Arthur D Little, the adoption of 5G network technology in India is expected to contribute about 2% to India’s GDP amounting to $180 billion by 2030.
The report titled 5G – Unfolding India's Era of Digital Convergence says that an increasing market penetration, sectoral reforms, improvement in user experience, speedy rollout of services, among others, will contribute to the growth.
Currently, India has 1.1 billion telecom users, which is the second highest in the world after China. Of this, 740 million are 4G users, and they are expected to shift to 5G.
The report says that the government’s National Optical Fibre Network plan which aims to connect all the 2.5 lakh gram panchayats in the country will help enhance India’s potential to 5G adoption.
Sector to lead 5G adoption
- Among the key sectors, energy and utilities will be the key driver of 5G contributing about 30% of the expected $180-billion potential, followed by retail at 20%, healthcare at 15% and manufacturing sector at 10%.
- According to the report, adoption of 5G smart metering, smart grid opportunities will boost the usage of 5G in the energy and utilities sector.
- In healthcare, the penetration is expected to come from online consultation, robotic surgeries, cloud-based patient profiling, and wearables.
- Digital transformation and smart factories are expected to drive 5G penetration in the manufacturing sector.
5G Launch In India
The 5th Generation mobile technology was officially launched by the Prime Minister on 1 October 2022. Airtel was the first company to launch the service in India.

2. Reliance Jio launches 5G Beta version in four cities after Bharti Airtel

Reliance Jio on the occasion of Dussehra has launched the beta trial of its True-5G services for Jio users in four cities Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Varanasi on 5 October 2022. Beta version means that it is being tested and is not available for full scale services.
Earlier Bharti Airtel became the first company to launch 5 g service in the country. It launched its services on 1 October 2022 at the 6th Indian Mobile Congress held in New Delhi from 1-4 October.
Both the Airtel and Jio 5G services are in trial stage and full service roll out will take a couple of months.
Jio expects to cover the whole country by December 2023 and Airtel by March 2024.

3. BSNL to start 4G services from November

The Government of India owned Telecom Company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced that it will start its 4 G service from November 2022 and will gradually upgrade it to 5 G by August 2023. BSNL is the only telecom company in India which still offers 3G service.
This was announced by the BSNL chairman and managing director PK Purwar at the 6th India Mobile Congress held in New Delhi from 1-4 October 2022.
Prime Minister Narendra officially launched 5G service on 1 October and Airtel became the first company to launch 5G service in India.
According to R K Purwar, the company is in discussion with IT major TCS and state-run telecom research and development organisation C-DOT-led consortium to deploy indigenously developed 4G technology in the network.
BSNL was set up in 2000 by the Government of India under the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Telecommunication. Its Headquarters is at New Delhi.
4. Airtel becomes the first telecom company to launch 5 g services in India

Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti Airtel has announced the launch of 5g mobile service in 8 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Siliguri on 1 October 2022. He announced the launch of 5 g service from 1 October 2022 during the 6th Indian Mobile Congress being held in New Delhi from 1-4 October 2022. Airtel became the first telecom company to launch the 5g service in India. It intends to cover the whole of India by March 2024.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mobile Congress on 1 October and the theme of the Mobile Congress is: ``New digital Universe".
Mukesh Ambani owned Jio Telecom has announced that it will roll out its services in the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai by Diwali and the whole country would be covered by December 2023.
Jio 5G will be the world`s largest and most advanced 5G network. Unlike other operators, Jiu’s 5G network will be stand alone with zero dependency on 4G network.
Vodafone Idea has not yet disclosed its 5g roll out plan.
