Why in news?

  • Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla paid floral tributes to Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das at his portrait in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on his Birth Anniversary, on 05 November 2024.
  • A booklet containing the profile of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, brought out in Hindi and English by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, was presented to the dignitaries who attended the function.

Who was Chittaranjan Das?

  • Chittaranjan Das born Nov. 5, 1870, Calcutta (now Kolkata) India and died June 16, 1925, in Darjeeling .
  • He was an Indian politician, leader of the Indian National Congress and founder of the Swaraj (Independence) Party in Bengal under  British rule.
  • The people of  India honored him with the titleDeshbandhu (“Friend of the Country”).
  • After graduating from Presidency College, Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1890, Das traveled to England to appear for the Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination but, failing to qualify, chose to enter the legal profession. 

His contribution in Indian freedom movement:

  • He defended many accused of political offenses and took an active part in nationalistic journalism.
  • Bitterly opposing British rule in India and rejecting all ideas of political or economic development of India along Western lines, he idealized the life of the ancient Indian village and saw a golden age in ancient Indian history. 
  • He supported the noncooperation movements launched against British rule by Mahatma Gandhi and in 1921 was imprisoned for six months as a political offender. 
  • In 1922 he became president of the Indian National Congress. Under his leadership the Congress abandoned its intentions to boycott colonially sponsored elections for provincial councils. 
  • The swaraj party was formed by Chittaranjan Das and  Motilal Nehru and other members of the Indian National Congress on 1 January 1923.
