Lok Sabha passes a bill to include Darlong Tribe in the Tripura Scheduled Tribe List

The Lok Sabha has passed the  Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2022. 

  • The bill seeks to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 for the inclusion of certain communities in the list of Scheduled Tribes in relation to the State of Tripura. 

  • The Bill proposes to add the "Darlong" community as a sub-tribe of "Kuki" to the list of Scheduled Tribes.

  • The bill was moved in the Lok Sabha by, Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda 

Important for Exam-

Article 342 in The Constitution Of India 1949

(1) The President may, with respect to any State or Union territory, specify certain tribes or tribal communities or parts of or groups within tribes or tribal communities as Scheduled Tribes in relation to that State or Union territory, only after consultation with the Governor of the state.

(2) Parliament may by law include in or exclude, any tribe or tribal community or part of or group within any tribe or tribal community, from the list of Scheduled Tribes.

  • Fifth Schedule(Article 244) - It contains provisions in relation to the administration and control of scheduled areas and scheduled tribes

  • Sixth Schedule (Article 244 and 275) - It contains provisions in relation to the administration of tribal areas in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram
