World Heart Day is observed every year on 29 September to raise public awareness about cardiovascular diseases, their prevention and their global impact.
Important facts
Worldwide, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the leading causes of mortality.
An estimated 17.9 million people died due to CVD in 2019, which is 32 percent of the total deaths globally.
Of all the people who died from CVD, 85 percent had a stroke and heart attack.
According to the World Health Organization, a quarter of these CVD deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
With these statistics in mind, experts stress the great need for awareness of heart disease prevention.
World Heart Day is an incredible platform to spread awareness about how people can prevent cardiovascular problems.

Background of the day
World Heart Day was launched by the World Heart Federation (WHF), a non-governmental organisation established in 1972 in Geneva in Switzerland.
This day was first organised in the year 2000.
